I heard once that the lottery is just another tax on stupid people. Good luck to all.

If Cletus wins, he will immediately file proper paperwork for POTUS (Republican) and challenge Trump to a war of words!

Damn, this is fun.

Hmm. I said I’d not take the lump sum, but here’s Mark giving the same advice. I may have to re-think my position...

All seem good except 2. I would be hesitant to trust a continued payout from a single government. I’d rather have the lump sum to place into a small and manageable collection of geographically dispersed investments.

Personally I would take the lump sum.

Don’t trust the promise of payments...see Illinois lottery.

Great advice. Tomorrow I will sit naked in front of the computer naked and watch the drawing. If my wife complains, I will say that Cuban did this when he became a billionaire. If the balls don’t come up I will say that I got locked out of the bathroom with my bathrobe inside.

I don’t know about not taking the Lump Sum, didn’t Illinois basically say they can’t payout their Lotto winnings? Better get everything you can upfront, because there are no certainties down the road.

He left out “try to keep it as quiet as possible.” Put the ticket in a safe deposit box and wait until all the hoopla dies down before presenting it for payment. Perhaps a couple of weeks. You can use that time to meet with attorneys and accountants and to make plans.

Yeah, I like most of Cuban’s advice here but I disagree about the lump sum. You should be hiring more than just a tax attorney, you want a whole team to manage the finances (and likely as a trust) and you want to money working for the trust’s benefit, not sitting in a low-yield annuity.

Even a modicum of common sense should ensure you have a massive revenue stream for life and an income-producing asset to pass on to your heirs (or put to work for a cause of your choice if you have no heirs) after you depart this earth.

I heard there were 28 $ 1,000,000.00 winners Saturday.

Five numbers, less the Powerball.

Someone with the same odds as me will win.

“MONEY can’t buy happiness.”

And another then said...

“But it makes misery so much easier!”

I’d take the lump sum. Not gonna live nearly as long as they drag out the annuity.

From a classic Reddit post:

This is the absolutely most important thing you can do right away: NOTHING.
Yes. Nothing.
DO NOT DECLARE YOURSELF THE WINNER yet.
Do NOT tell anyone. The urge is going to be nearly irresistible. Resist it. Trust me.
/ 1. IMMEDIATELY retain an attorney.
Get a partner from a larger, NATIONAL firm. Don’t let them pawn off junior partners or associates on you. They might try, all law firms might, but insist instead that your lead be a partner who has been with the firm for awhile. Do NOT use your local attorney. Yes, I mean your long-standing family attorney who did your mother’s will. Do not use the guy who fought your dry-cleaner bill. Do not use the guy you have trusted your entire life because of his long and faithful service to your family. In fact, do not use any firm that has any connection to family or friends or community. TRUST me. This is bad. You want someone who has never heard of you, any of your friends, or any member of your family. Go the closest big city and walk into one of the national firms asking for one of the “Trust and Estates” partners you have previously looked up on http://www.martindale.com from one of the largest 50 firms in the United States which has an office near you. You can look up attorneys by practice area and firm on Martindale.
