US to lack full space launch capability beyond 2019 without Russian engine

Full US space launch capability may be delayed beyond 2019 if it cuts its supply of Russian-made RD-180 rocket engines, US Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Wednesday.

"Industry tells us... [they can] make 2019 for an engine, but I must say an engine alone will not get us to space. It needs to be integrated with a rocket, it needs to be tested, it needs to be certified, and to get all of that done, to have a launch capability will be longer than 2019," James said.

The United States currently relies on the Atlas V rocket powered by Russia's RD-180 engine for its national defense space launches. In 2014, the Congress instituted a law requiring the Pentagon to cut its reliance on the RD-180 after the downturn in US-Russia relations.

obama thinks NASA’s job is to out-reach to muslims.

This is the result.

We rely on our enemies for vital space technologies and EVEN TO GET A MAN INTO SPACE.

But at least NASA got that all important “muslim-outreach” program started.

A long, far cry from the heady space-race days of the 1960s and ‘70s.

I have (yet another) dumb question: Why hasn’t any American company reverse engineered the Russian design, and marketed it’s own clone version of this engine? Any “improvement” in the design, even if minor, would make complicate a patent challenge.

I asked a family friend why we can’t build Saturn V’s again. He said. NASA lost the plans in a fire. No hard drives. No mag tapes. No microfiche. No Blueprints. Are you bleeping kidding me?!

Obama doesn’t build the Atlas V rocket, Lockheed/Boeing does. Why are they relying on Russian engines now, and why did they decide to use Russian engines when the vehicle was introduced in 2002?

Don’t sweat it!

The Chinese are working on a copy and we’ll be able to buy them through Walmart for cheap.

Absolutely disgraceful.

This is what Obama has squandered. Any national media reporting on this? Of course not.

No One told Obama that "Magic Carpets" don't actually exist and can't be used to send people to the ISS...

Why do we need a fancy Russian engine? Just drive out to the desert in a Chevy to take a few “outer space” photos like we used to do.

Updated F-1 Could Replace RD-180 Rocket Engine

Or SpaceXs' Merlin engine?

The purchase and licensing ofthe Russian engines was, in part, a “make work” slash payoff program for ex-Soviet rocket scientists and to provide money to stabilize their industry. There was a great fear that unemployed rocket scientists would start selling their services to the North Koreans or Iranians.

Hey, if I can lose all my guns and ammo in a tragic boat accident, NASA can lose anything, anyway they want.
