Is Conservative Talk Radio Losing Its Influence?
WNYC ^ | March 25, 2016

Ted Cruz has few friends on Capitol Hill, and the establishment is starting to line up behind him to take out Donald Trump.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham have endorsed Cruz, and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Florida Senator Marco Rubio have hinted that they also might come along.

Cruz's base of support comes from conservative women, educated evangelicals, older voters and nationally syndicated conservative radio talk show hosts. Mark Levin and Glenn Beck have endorsed him, and he gets strong support from Rush Limbaugh.

Though Cruz has a friend in right-wing media, Donald Trump is still winning. Is conservative talk radio, once a powerful force in Republican politics, losing its influence? For answers, we turn to Darryl Parks, a media consultant and former talk radio host.

“Is conservative talk radio, once a powerful force in Republican politics, losing its influence?”.....Not for the lack of trying...........

I’ll say it again........”NOT FOR THE LACK OF TRYING”.

There is one local area station that picks a candidate and then does EVERYTHING they can to disparage that candidate, no matter what or when he/she says anything. Tell me again how “un-biased” the media is, be they radio/tv or written media, they are all the same.

A couple of months back (before David Limbaugh published his two passionate, Christian sided, anti-Trump pleas in Town Hall), Rush Limbaugh stated on his show, that the very survival of our country depends on closing our borders, stopping the PC left and defeating the Islamic threat to our country. Without doing this, nothing else matters.

The only candidate that shows a clear path to deal with this problem effectively and swiftly is Trump. That broadcast was the deciding factor for my supporting Trump.

Have you even bothered listening to Ted Cruz? Have you gone to his website?

HE has stood strong on ALL these issues... He is the only one that has PROVEN he is not afraid of the GOPe . He stood alone against all of them.

Andrew Klavan, Ben Shapiro, and Steve Deace all started lying about Trump at the same time—when Cruz began lying about Trump. Trump wants single-payer “for all Americans.” Trump is pro-abortion. Trump is a uniquely evil person, who is a fascist. In fact, Trump is Hitler.

Steve Deace is a Cruz slappy. I tune in randomly, and all I hear is HATE. And I mean hate, contempt, spleen, bile, disgust. He loathes and despises Trump. And he lies, and lies, and lies about him.

Rush has been phoning it in ever since he started phoning it in from Florida. Levin is in the tank for Cruz.

Talk radio was informative before the internet. Now, all they can do is read news items their listeners have already read.

I never listen to AM radio. Who wants to hear repetitive ads for Gold Bond powder or buying precious metals 20 to 25 minutes each hour. If I can't record it and fast forward through the commercials, I'm not going to waste my time.

Well, what I’ve noticed is that Rush is turning into a ‘rally around Cruz’ show. Not interested and have been turning him off lately.

Good post, and dead on regarding Rush’s waterboy days for Dubya and the GOPe.

Rush was great when Clowntoon was Prez. But he lost it when Bush was elected. He constantly tied himself in knots trying to spin Bushes liberalism as stealth conservatism. I quit listening by 2012. It was sad to see Rush turn into Bushes toady. Rush really thought that given control the Pubbies would reverse our nation’s course. For such a smart guy he wasn’t able to recognize the corruption and treason of the GOPe. He’s never recovered fully.

“Red Eye Radio (Eric and Gary) have been anti-Trump for eight months straight without a break.”

Perhaps but they are not nearly as blinded or obnoxious as the #NeverTrump crowd. I think their main issue with Trump is that he is not a conservative. He never claimed to be, just that he is running as a republican.

WOW! This run up to a presidential election is like no other in the history of our republic. Lots of agendas/misinformation/deceit/corruption/”conservatism” is being exposed…and we haven’t even gotten to Hillaryous Rotten, yet. WOW!

Prepare accordingly for foreign, domestic and October surprises. WOW!

C’mon November!

If conservative talk radio is losing its influence, it’s because people like me are tuning out due to the incessant and lengthy commercial breaks that make listening to it a waste of time.

Agreed. Levin, prager, medved, Shapiro have all been on the Cruz bandwagon for months. Mocking trump, etc. I’m haven’t been able to listen to all the above for months. At least Rush, while a Cruz guy, has not gone completely off the deep end in support of Cruz, ( who more and more every day just gives me the creeps).

And I don’t think sticking to “true conservative principles matters to me this time around. I’m done with purists and their candidates. They are all talk. Idealogues. They get in, and not a g-damn thing changes. No freaking wall yet, after all this talk, all these promises? Year after year after year.

Well, I’m a 3 issue voter now. Wall- security/crime, and trade imbalance.

People stuck in long commutes will keep talk radio going.

But the Internet is a much better source of news.

I’m done with most Conservative talk radio hosts. Their definition of conservatism is different that mine.

I used to be a real conservative talk radio junkie. I’d go from one to the other and sometimes felt conflicted because two favorites were on different channel.

Now I can’t listen to Rush, Levin, Medved, Bennet, or even the normally kindly and avuncular Dennis Prager. They all bash Trump full time and try to figure out what’s wrong with people who support him. It’s insulting, and that would be ok but I’m not learning anything from them anymore. They seem to have “dumbed down” in order to shill for Ted Cruz. They feign interest and curiosity about the Trump phenomenon but when callers or guests try to explain it, they dismiss, block, interrupt, twist or talk over them, like the monkeys stubbornly covering their eyes and ears.

I still like Laura Ingraham and Hannity is fair, but that’s about it. It all started when Trump came on the scene. Before that, we all agreed the enemy was the left (sometimes GOPe left).

Wait, I’m wrong. It started with Medved before that. For a while now, he has used the term Losertarian in the place of libertarian, and spoken with utter contempt about Ron or Rand Paul. The problem with that is there was always part of Paul’s postions that I liked - sound money, audit the federal reserve, etc. in fact I am very close to being a libertarian other than the foriegn policy isolationism.

I wouldn’t mind a fair discussion, but the contempt puzzled me coming from Medved. I think it was a precursor to the current contempt they all have for Trump and Trump supporters.

It’s a big surprise and dissappointment. These guys were my heros. Unlike liberals, they used critical thinking and history’s lessons to arrive at the truth instead of spreading lies and obfuscation to advance an agenda.

To see them sink to this level of character assasination and stubbornness makes me sad. I miss the old talk radio.
