Big Studios Cutting Losses This Weekend, Pulling Flops From Theaters Earlier Than Usual
Showbiz ^ | October 21,2017 | Roger Friedman

It’s a bizarre season in Hollywood. Almost nothing is “working,” and the studios can’t afford to waste any more money hoping things will turn around. They’re pulling flops from theaters earlier than usual.

This weekend, for example, Warner Bros. is putting out a white flag on “Blade Runner” after three tough weeks. They’ve cut the number of theaters showing Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful film by 855. So far, “Blade Runner” has made just $66 million. Audiences have not clamored to it. And now, week by week, Warners will quietly take it away.

Warner’s isn’t alone. Universal is pulling Tom Cruise’s “American Made” from 539 locations after a month in release. The Doug Liman directed thriller has made just $43 million. Good reviews haven’t helped push Cruise fans to theaters. One problem was lack of promotion since Cruise wasn’t available. Also, audiences may have just soured on him after “The Mummy” and other flops. With both studios, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

The biggest decease (de-crease, but pun intended here) is for the revived “Flatliners.” With just $16 million in the till, Sony would be better off paying people to see this turkey. They’re retreating from 1,433 theaters this weekend, leaving “Flatliners” to breathe on its own. It will be completely dead by Sunday.

Also just about dead is the much praised “Battle of the Sexes,” Fox Searchlight couldn’t get anyone to go see it despite great reviews and excellent marketing. I’m actually dumbfounded that it’s made just $11 million. FS is killing off 849 screens. Ouch! And “Battle” was supposed to yield some awards action.

Warner’s, meantime, is facing more trouble than the other studios. Their “Geostorm” is going to be a disaster this weekend. And their “Lego Ninja” movie is leaving 951 theaters after $52 million and five weeks.

“And Peter opened the gate and went out into the green meadow,,,”(cue Prokofiev violins...). Villeneuve is a genius, on the order of Hitchcock and others of that era. Too bad it won’t make a lot of immediate money but perhaps over time it will be a cult favorite. I was spell bound!

Thanks...I believe that will be plenty of momentum for a series.

What’s better, is when you are in the theater, it’s nice knowing no liberals are sitting with you...

Honestly, with the comfort of our home theatre, why would I want to sit in a public theatre for 3 hours? I think maybe I would do this in a brew pub, but I want my drink, maybe a meal and a snack or something. It’s what we got used to at home. 2 hours I can deal with but longer then I will just wait until I can see it at home.

Touche’.

With four gainfully employed children, I forget that this isn’t the reality in many cases. Heck, one of them even bought lunch the other day!

It wasn’t that hard to stop watching NFL games. Giving up on new movies will be even easier. Old movies from the 50’s are fabulous. Never get tired of The Searchers.

A couple weeks ago, my wife and I found ourselves in Nyack, NY with a few hours to kill. There was a large multiplex nearby with about a dozen movies showing.

There was absolutely nothing there we wanted to see. We even checked out previews on our cellphones and it was all utter dreck that we had no desire to see. So we killed time walking around the gigantic mall they had there and watching kids climb some rope tower.

There are tons of jobs out there, at least in Texas, but they at service industry wages.

Having just returned from CO, the pot industry is thriving, at least around Boulder.

Yes, it’s a thinking movie, but a poorly-edited thinking movie. Tolkien’s quote about “feel(s) thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread,” seems appropriate.

I watched it in 3D, and it was worthwhile. I’m a big steam punk fan, and this movie continues the original’s pioneering effort, seamlessly mixing 50’s Vegas pop with post-modern tech in a classic detective film noir, however; when the CG effects usurp the characters, it becomes distracting.

The CG was amazing and appropriate, but the editor’s consistently missed that elusive balance between action and setting that captures the audiences’ attention.

It’s a good flick that borders on greatness; but you walk away wondering why it just wasn’t spectacular.

Movies now seem to have two speeds now: either an exploding roller coaster or “looking concerned”. Both of which got old about 20 years ago.

“The baby boomers completely destroyed Hollywood.”

That is laughable. Hollywood has been destroyed by Leftists who have infiltrated EVERY aspect of American life with the intent to destroy. It all started with the Frankfurt School in the 1930s.

Blade Runner 2049 was old school SF that dwelt on timeless subjects - no overt SJW stuff anywhere that I could see. Same as the original.

An R-rated cerebral sci-fi with a narrow fan base aimed at older viewers who don't really go to the theaters much anymore. It's probably a great film but no surprise it's doing poorly. The people who want to see it are waiting for the home release.

Hollywood still doesn't get it.

It’s two hours and forty minutes long.

That may put some folks off.
