In response to your post 375, I do not equate passing a farm bill with the Middle East. Legislative compromises are governed by what the Congress wants and what can get passed.

Foreign policy is in the hands of the executive branch. Therefore he doesn't have to worry about Rats, or whether he has enough votes.

Apparently you see legislative compromise (which Reagan also believed in) as evil and "caving." I can't help you on that point...you just need to understand politics better.

I don't think the Taliban felt that President Bush compromised, and I imagine that the Palestinians are thinking long and hard.

Israel's semi-occupation is far better than an armed Palestinian state. What sense does that make? Under Oslo agreements the Pallies have been administering the West Bank and Gaza for the last number of years and have done no good for their people. PallieLand has devolved into an even worse s**thole. Arafat started his disastrous Jihad/Intifada after he walked out on Oslo negotiations.

You mean Camp David. In Oslo he signed the deal. Even shared the Nobel Prize with Peres and Rabin. The latter of course got murdered for his trouble, and not by an Arab either.

Since it is a FACT that President Bush has in past, comprimised on policies he has presented; Why do you NOT expect President Bush to water down through comprimise with vested interests, the conditions he uses in this latest Middle-East policy announcement ?

This has everything to do with the Executive Branch/State Department, and little or nothing to do with working with the Legislative Branch of our government.

Did you sleep through the speech? Why do you insist on making others believe a lie? You aren't even going throught the trouble to take the president out of context. You are simply omitting all that the president actually said.

Considering that the President just ringingly endorsed the Mitchell Report as continuing US policy, I bet not. The broadcast media will probably miss that, since it doesn't lend itself to those 30 second sound bites. But the Government of Israel definitely got the message.

Whether Arafat stays or goes is quite beside the point. The Palestinians want Israel's annihilation. They're backed by repressive Arab countries, like Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya and Saudi Arabia. Egypt does their bidding as well. Bush knows full well that there's no chance the state which will border Israel will be a republic. He also knows that land for peace is a sham. It hasn't worked in the past, and it won't work in the future. Land isn't the issue. These are terrorists. Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hebollah, and the rest. The President's speech was not a speech of a statesman. It was more of the same platitudes. But worst of all, it tells terrorists throughout the world that the Bush Doctrine is dead. Yes, we defeated the Taliban, but since then we've been on defense. We've not taken the steps even in our own country that are necessary to ensure our own protection -- from arming pilots, closing our borders to illegal immigrants, stopping and searching all would-be airline passengers who come from terrorist states or states like Saudi Arabia, arming pilots and co-pilots, x-raying all luggage, putting armed marshalls on all flights, etc. I think the Anerican people know what needs to be done, and they're way ahead of the politically correct leadership in Washington. The President must do more, and he must not concern himself with what the media or congressional Democrats or the Europeans think or say about him. What's right is right. It's one thing for the president to compromise his entire domestic agenda, which is bad enough. But to falter in the war on terrorism is simply intolerable. There's too much at stake.
