A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day - Weekend....12-21,22-02

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

To Our FReeper FRiends: We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our spotlight on various FReepers. We thought we'd kick back on the weekends and simply review those who've been featured during the week. If you missed seeing them and want to say hello to them now, feel free to click on the link to that particular thread. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today and tomorrow, please feel free to do that also. One of us will always be around to see the welcome mat is still out, and maybe even put fresh flowers on the table. :)

     2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
     3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
     4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.

I cannot even imagine going shopping today...You must be a glutton for punishment...The malls have been so crowded this week...I found myself muttering to myself "Doesn't anybody work M-F 9-5 jobs anymore"...

Merry Christmas!

Hi Valerie - that's a good enough reason to throw it up here. Thanks for all the great pictures that you share with us...one of these days, we will say, "We knew her back when."

I love that aqua car color, too. Is it one of those Chevy's from the '50's?

Visited the fabric section of Wal-Mart today ( I confess I can't go into Wally World without going to the fabric section) and they had 2 beautiful Patriotic BEAR pieces of material with a third that matches it! Bears waving the Flag, bears dressed in Red, White and Blue, My country tis of Thee, USA, Liberty, the Pledge. They really are beautiful pieces of material. I scarfed up a yard and a half of two of them, the third I only got a half a yard. It was patches suitable for putting on T shirts.

Keep in mind that the sunrise for Fairbanks was at 10:55 a.m. and will set in one hour at 2:40 p.m. and what you see at 13:38:32 is the maximum amount of light for the day.

It is usually this murky ethereal light rather than outright sunshine.

My main problem was going to the commissary at this time of day, after lunch, and emerging right after 'sunset' into pitch black darkness.
Very disorienting, and you think, "Oh my gosh - is it time to cook dinner already?!"

But - but - it is a balmy 11 below zero now!
Unheard of!!
LOL

At this time in 1965, right after Christmas, we had had weeks of no warmer than 40 below zero - mostly 50 below.
The base coal supply for the steam heat was getting critically low, and they actually were planning to evacuate all the dependents to Seattle and group the men in as few barracks as they could to conserve what was on hand.

Can you imagine how heartbroken we were when the temperatures broke and 'soared'??
We were dying to go to the Lower 48 and a degree of 'normalcy!'

One 'must' to get in the Lower 48 was fresh milk. What we had in stores was milk from which the water had been extracted - shipped - and Alaska water added to it. Never tasted 'right.'

That fall, too, we had a three-month period when not one fresh vegetable of any kind was in the commissary - - depressingly barren section.

I also hungered for current news of any kind. Our tv programs were tapes 3 weeks after they played in the lower 48 - sent to Juneau - then Anchorage - and then Fairbanks.

Never got news analysis programs, nor did the Fairbanks paper report any world/Lower 48 news - just local issues like the Police Report - "Mrs. Jackson on 9th Avenue had a moose loose in her yard yesterday." Important stuff..:)))
