One day, Mary Wells failed to show up for a recording session, and musicians' union rules demanded that a lead vocalist be present on the mic -- so secretary Reeves was hastily tapped to sing "I'll Have to Let Him Go." That song went on to become the first single credited to the newly renamed Martha & the Vandellas in 1963; their second single, the ballad "Come and Get These Memories," reached the R&B Top Five.

Classic Motown Tidbits

While working at the factory Berry used to constantly write songs and send them to singers and put them into Contests, Berry and his sister Co wrote a song with Billy Davis called "Reet Petite" in 1957 and was recorded by Jackie Wilson, this became a hit and Berry earned $1000 from the song. He went on to write another four songs for Jackie Wilson which were also hits. Berry's first lone production was called "Ooh shucks" by the Five Stars on the Mark X label in 1957 and was becoming good at spotting talent, in 1958 he had spotted a band at a talent show called the Miracles and asked them to record with him ending in them releasing a single on End records called Got a "job" which was a flop, then later on they released another single called "I cry" which was also a flop. But in the lead singer of the Miracles he had discovered a great singer, songwriter and Producer in William "Smokey" Robinson, as well as three others in the shape of Marv Johnson, Eddie Holland and his brother Brian. They recorded and released Marv Johnson singing a single called "My Baby O" and then Brian Holland released one called "Shock" which are to be very significant to the Motown story.

Berry Gordy borrows $800 from his family to found Motown records. Motown's first office is in the family house at 2648 West Grand Boulevard

An unsuccessful audition of the Matadors for Wilson's manager Nat Tarnopol would change Gordy's life. Berry really liked them a lot and told them so after the audition. This was to be the beginning of a close friendship between Gordy and the Matador's lead singer Smokey Robinson. The Matadors soon changed their name to the Miracles. Gordy managed the Miracles and produced their 1958 single "Got a Job" on the End Records label. The small royalty check he received from End along with similar small royalty checks for other hits he had co-written convinced him to form his own label Tamla Records. Originally he had wanted to call it Tammy after the Debbie Reynolds ballad, but the name had already been take.

Tamla was one of the four major Motown labels and the first to be incorporated by the Motown Record Corporation. It is only second to Motown in number of releases. The first single was released in January 1959, the last 1986.

Launched by Berry Gordy in 1962. The last Gordy record was released early in 1987. The initial logo design featured the immortal phrase "It's what's in the groove that counts".

V.I.P. was a Motown subsidiary label in operation from 1964 to 1972.

Motown was the largest label within Berry Gordy's family of labels. The first Motown single was released in September 1959. Berry Gordy sold the Motown Company and its subsidiaries to MCA on June 29, 1988.

1512 The Fifth Lateran Council opened under Pope Julius II. Its twelve sessions lasting through 1517, the council continued under Leo X, following Julius' death in 1513.
1675 A Massachusetts law was enacted requiring church doors to be locked during the worship service. (Too many people were leaving before the long sermons were completed.)
1738 English revivalist George Whitefield, 23, first arrived in America. In all, Whitefield crossed the Atlantic thirteen times, and died in Massachusetts in 1770, during his seventh visit.
1850 Sixteen year old Charles H. Spurgeon made his public profession of faith in Jesus Christ in a Primitive Methodist Chapel, in Colchester, England. Spurgeon began a preaching career the following year which did not end until his death in 1892.
1878 Death of William Whiting, 53, Anglican poet and music instructor. He is known to have written only one hymn during his life, but its popularity has endured: "Eternal Father, Strong to Save."
