What is the definition of 'anti-Mormon'? - Anti-Mormon Caucus (Just Kidding)
Mormon Times ^ | March 5, 2010 | By McKay Coppins

What is the definition of 'anti-Mormon'?

I have often heard the criticism that Latter-day Saints classify everyone who disagrees with our beliefs as "anti-Mormon." Of course, the people who say this are usually anti-Mormons. Am I proving their point? I don't think so.

I actually agree that this is a problem in our church. After all, our belief system, if firmly embraced, demands a lot of personal sacrifice, and we often become hyper-defensive when we sense a threat to our faith.

Unfortunately, this often leads to irrational name-calling and blindly neglecting to differentiate between non-Mormons and anti-Mormons.

Of course, that's not to say anti-Mormons don't exist, or that it's unimportant to identify them. We just need to properly define the term.

First of all, we shouldn't call people who simply don't believe in Mormonism "anti-Mormons." We should call them Catholics or Baptists or Muslims or atheists. People who ascribe themselves to faiths or philosophies that contradict Mormonism should not automatically be seen as antagonists. They should be credited with having their own beliefs.

Now, what about people who try to convert Latter-day Saints to their belief systems? Are they anti-Mormons?

No.

The believing Baptist who testifies of his church's doctrine to a Latter-day Saint is trying to do something he believes is constructive. Even if he attempts to point out supposed flaws in Mormon doctrine, if his genuine intent is to save a soul and he maintains a polite, rational tone, I don't think he deserves the anti-Mormon label. After all, should Mormon missionaries be considered anti-Catholics or anti-Protestants?

The line, I believe, that separates non-Mormons from anti-Mormons is motivation. Anti-Mormons are people who put down Mormon beliefs, practices and people simply for the sake of destroying their faith. Not many anti-Mormons would admit that is their primary goal, of course, but that doesn't mean it isn't so.

For the most part, anti-Mormons should be ignored. But before that can happen, they have to be identified

Mormons believe all humans are spirit OFFSPRING (genos) of God.

Clarify this for me EW

Jesus apparently attained full godhood BEFORE he came to earth and obtained a body and without going through the eternal laws of progression that are required while a man - temple marriage, ordinances, works, etc. This apparently is something that his father was incapable of doing.

Why were the spirit children inhabiting the bodies of Adam and Eve selected over Jesus for the first humans - what did they do to deserve such an honor? How did they progress since there were no temples or priesthood at that time?

“14. It is hard to claim with a straight face that a religion that teaches Jesus Christ is God, the Son of God, who was born of the virgin Mary, who died on the cross for our sins, who was resurrected after three days and is the only way to heaven could be anything but a Christian faith.”

Any religion that denies that Christ was not created, but existed as God always, is not Christian. That’s just silly.

is that a mistruth?
Have not mormons been warned about going outside approved lds sites - do a search on google and you’ll find dozens of warnings.

Further - you cannot claim to have full knowledge that this isn’t a valid letter.

Face it TP - if this is the best example you can find - you are swinging and missing.

Lets start back at the beginning with this one...

Edward Watson :The players on this forum have repeatedly lied and distorted our true beliefs

Nana: Post # 74 (Lovely list of things that mormons must have decided to believe now...)

EW: Post # 104 (Answering Nana’s list and giving each point a number)

So now Nana will put them together (using the numbers of EW for the lurkers and other interesting parties and will add a comment or two as needed...
_________________________________________________

1. Nana:

So mormons now believe in the Trinity ???

1. EW:

Mormons do NOT believe in the traditional description of the Trinity. We believe in the biblical Triad or threeness of the Godhead. We believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. These three separate and distinct entities are God by nature and share a oneness in a manner that cannot be imagined. We do not believe God is nonmaterial, is Mind, is three hypostates in one ousia (whatever that is). We believe God is a spirit being who dwells in an immortal material body just as we are spirit beings dwelling in mortal bodies.

Nana’s additional comment..

The Trinity...Christians believe, mormons dont...Check...

2. Nana:

And that Jesus is God...the word of God who is eternal from “in the beginning” ???

2. EW:

Mormons believe Jesus is God. The Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants explicitly and repeatedly state Jesus is God incarnate, who was the Old Testament YHWH God of the Hebrews, who is from everlasting to everlasting, who is the Eternal God.

Nana’s additional comment...

Jesus is God...but Jesus is the Word of God (the Second person of the Trinity) and not God the Father (who is the First Person of the trinity) ...Mormons and Christians have different beliefs right there..(Refer to 1 John 5:7)

3. Nana;

That Jesus shed His blood on the Cross to save us and not in the Garden of Gethsemanee ???

3: EW;;

Mormons believe Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin and death. We believe his Atonement, that mindless, terrifying substitution sacrifice STARTED in the Garden of Gethsemane. The agony he went through was so intense that he, despite being God, was so great he bled blood. His nature of being God and his nature of being sinless, allowed him to become our substitute. One sinless God is a fair substitute for an infinite number of sinful men. He, despite being the greatest of all, allowed himself the indignity of dying a slave’s death on the cross. He rose from the dead three days later, triumphing over death and now sits at the Father’s right hand.

Nana’s additional comment...

There’s a lot in this one so here we go...

a. EW: Mormons believe Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin and death.

Too broad a subject. What does that mean to mormons ???

b. We believe his Atonement, that mindless, terrifying substitution sacrifice STARTED in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Yes, mormons do believe this, but its not true. It started and ended on the Cross. And it wasnt mindless. It was a deliberate plan by a brilliant calculating mind. God is not a dummy. He always knows what He is doing. he always has a purpose for what He does. God wasnt terrified. Nothing terrifies God.

c. The agony he went through was so intense that he, despite being God, was so great he bled blood.

Jesus never bled blood in Gethesamane there is no scripture in the Bible that says that. Jesus was not in agony in Gethesemane. Plus he was angry at His disciples because they would not join Him. Hardly a “substitution sacrifice” if He was not alone in what he did. He wasnt God in His form as Spirit that bled on the Cross, He was God come in the flesh that bled on the Cross. He HAD to bleed. It was his shed Blood on the Cross that cleansed us from all sin.

d. His nature of being God and his nature of being sinless, allowed him to become our substitute.

Jesus IS God. God is not tempted like a man so His “sinlessness” is not that of a man’s. When the Word became flesh as Jesus He took on the attributes of man, including the ability to be tempted. However He never gave in to temptation. And when he was tempted by Satan 3 times in the widerness, He rebuked satan every time. However when Satan tempted Joey Smith with the same temptations, joey Smith ran to the sins and took them on and made a religion from them that became known as Mormonism. Mormonism is not Christianity.

Then we come to the temptation in the Garden of gethsemane when Jesus was tempted to change His mind about the Cross because He would be separated from God the Father and he would be in hell for 3 days and His man’s heart had to trust that God would get Him out of there. “For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy one to rot in the grave.” Psalm 16:10 “because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.” Acts 2:26

You try wrestling with that terrible future and see if you dont sweat great drops of WATERY sweat that dropped like blood might drop with the anguish of the thought of separation from God the Father for 3 days. Jesus had never been apart from God the Father Jesus had always been with God the Father as the Word, the Second person of the Trinity (Do you have any understanding why the devil loves to convince people that there is no Trinity ??? Without the Trinity it was not God who hung there on that Cross.)

So Jesus was there in Gethesamane wrestling with the thought of having to trust not that all would go well, but if He could bear that separation from God trapped as he was in His Earth suit. Thats why Jesus understands when we feel that god is not there and reassures us that he will never leave us or forsake us. Because of Jesus sheding His blood on the cross and dying on the cross none of us ever have to be separated from God unless we choose to be by denying Jesus.

e. One sinless God is a fair substitute for an infinite number of sinful men.

Mind expounding on this one a bit more ???

f. He, despite being the greatest of all, allowed himself the indignity of dying a slave’s death on the cross.

No Jesus didnt die a slaves death. He died a criminals death. A slave is innocent, a victim of circumstances. and usually slaves dont get arbitarially crucified. a slave is valuable, property. A criminal is guilty of crimes, sins. Jesus died in the place of guilty, sinful criminals, US.

g. He rose from the dead three days later, triumphing over death and now sits at the Father’s right hand.

Theres more to it than that. Jesus walked up to Satan, demaned that satan hand ovedrt the keys to death hell and the grave and Satan handed them over to Jesus. Pay attention. When Jesus got those keys, the power of God was so strong that hundreds of people came out of the graves and were alive and walked around and went to their families. Dont water down the power of Almighty God.

4. Nana:

That mormon males will not bcome gods with planets of their own and harems full of women to constantly impregnate to make spirit children to worhip the new gods

4: EW:

Mormons believe all humans are spirit OFFSPRING (genos) of God. The Bible describes us as his “genus” with Jesus as the firstborn (prototokos). Our physical bodies are his creation while our spirits (who we actually are) are his spirit offspring. This is why God made the unimaginable sacrifice of subjecting his only begotten Son Jesus Christ to the unimaginable torture of the Atonement. No sane entity, God or man, will subject their child to unimaginable torture for the sake of toys or mere creations. Christ’s sacrifice shows we’re much more important in God’s eyes than a mere creation.

BECAUSE we’re God’s spirit offspring, we are given the opportunity to become like him. While we are not “God” by nature - only the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are God by nature; we become God or gods by Grace. How? Because Jesus Christ “bridged” the two separate natures. He was fully, 100% God and he was fully, 100% man. He was “God” from his Father and “Man” from his mother. Because of Christ’s incarnation as a human or member of the “Homo Sapiens” species; he shares whatever he has with his true followers. He is the Head while we are the Body. He is the Groom while we are the Bride. These descriptions denote a unity far beyond what one would expect between God and some of his creatures.

We believe the Bible isn’t lying when it repeatedly describes the true followers are sharing Christ’s oneness or becoming like him. The early Church Fathers described this concept as THEOSIS no less than 150 times.

Instead of just enjoying “eternal bliss;” his true followers become the “bene ha elohim,” the Sons and Daughters of God, enjoying eternal increase and eventually evolving to a point of becoming deified into the oneness of the Godhead.

Nana’s additional coment...

Edward, That’s a lot of words you gave us but I’ll narrow it down to this. I dont think you know what you are talking about. None of that is in the Bible.

No we are not God’s “spiritual off spring” God didnt have sex with any “mother Godess” to create us...

You said “This is why God made the unimaginable sacrifice of subjecting his only begotten Son Jesus Christ to the unimaginable torture of the Atonement.”

Since mormons believe that the “Atonement took place in Gethsemane, No jesus did not suffer any torture there.

Then you continued “No sane entity, God or man, will subject their child to unimaginable torture for the sake of toys or mere creations.” Well actually thats exactly what happened. We are a creation. Male and female created he them ...remember ??? the sixth day ??? Remember ??? Look Ma no hands Look Edward, no sex between God and a Godess to create your spirit.

5. Nana:

That women are not eternal sex slaves but are equal with men in salvation ???

5. EW:

What’s the obsession with sex? Mormons believe men and women are equal. In fact, we believe women are naturally more righteous than men. This is why the Priesthood is given only to men since we need it in order to approach the spiritual level of women.

5. Smile you’re on Candid Camera is all I could come up with on this one for now...Edward I doubt if you believed what you wrote about the priesthood any more than I did when I read this...

Women are second class citizens at best in Mormondom and are not considered “worthy” to have a “priesthood”

If women had a choice and it didnt matter whether they were priests or not why were they not only refused but maligned when they asked to be promoted to priesthood in 1978 when the black men were finally considered “worthy” due to the threat of the loss of the tax exemption for the mormon coffees ??? Why not just humor the more righteous gender with the priesthood ??? After all women who were more righteous meaning CLOSER TO GOD would know God’s mind better than men would...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm ??????????????

As for the sex thingy, you’ll have to ask Joey Smith...It was Joey Smith who was obsessed with sex, not Christians...he did it....we just report...

6. Nana:

That Mary did not have sex with man or god ???

6. EW:

Again with the sex. We believe God the Father is the literal father of the physical body of Jesus. We do NOT believe Mary had sex with God. All we are referring to is Jesus Christ’s PATERNITY. Where then did half his chromosomes come from? Where did his ability to reanimate after cellular decay originate? Or walk on water or heal the sick just by touching? He obviously wasn’t a clone since he possessed a different gender than Mary.

Nana’s additional comments...

And another section on sex. No, God did not have sex with Mary...The Christian God is well able to do anything He likes...Nothing is impossible with the Christian God...

The healing the sick thingy came from the anointing that Jesus recieving from the holy ghost when the Holy Ghost baptised Him at the River Jordan..

The walking on water thingy ??? Peter did it too...Shall we talk about that ??? Got an ideas on that one ??? Anyone ??? Lurkers want to chip in ???

7. Nana:

That Jesus is not the brother of Lucifer ???

7. EW:

Since we believe we’re all God’s spirit offspring with Christ as the Firstborn (prototokos); we believe Satan and the demons are also our siblings who rebelled against God’s plan and were cast out. Jesus and Satan are spirit siblings with each other and with us. We’re all one family. This is why Satan could demand God give him his power. God cast him out instead of merely pointing out to him that it wasn’t possible since he was only a creation.

Furthermore, if Satan was only a creation of God; that then opens up the philosophical problem of theodical culpability - God then is responsible for all the evil Satan causes since he created him, and as an all-powerful being who knows the future; he then becomes responsible for Satan’s actions since he has perfect foresight.

Nana’s additional comments...

IF Satan was ONLY a creation of God ??? He was he was only an angel, a created being...Jesus was God...Jesus created Lucifer...there were THREE archangels...Ludifer in charge of music who had a pipe organ etc built into him...he sang and worshipped God around the throne and lead the other angels in worship...the music/choir director...there was Gabriel the messager angel...he came to Mary to tell her she would be gewtting pregnant WITHOUT HAVING SEX WITH MAN OR GOD...and then there was Michael who was the warring angel...Lucifer got himself tossed out of heaven for thinking he was greater than God..

Ah, so it was acknowledged as a FAKE already - well then TP seems you need to dig a little deeper for this despicable twisting of mormon doctrine. Seems your case is still pretty thin.

BTW how did Jesus become a god before coming to earth to obtain a body and undergo all the testing and completion of the ordinances and works. Was Jesus married in a temple?

Oh come on Tadpole (btw, haven’t seen you in awhile how have you been?). The ‘letter’ was NOT supposed to be serious and I DID NOT EXPECT anyone to take it seriously (esp with the intentional spelling errors).

Looking back, I should have put a ‘joke’ disclaimer in and I did apologize if anyone took it seriously.

And it wasn’t a jab at LDS history or doctrine, it was a jab at the ‘business atmosphere’ that can permeate the LDS wards sometimes. But since you linked to it, and lest anyone think it was a ‘mistruth’ of value, I will post it here with a DISCLAIMER.

THIS IS A JOKE. I WROTE IT AND IT IS NOT A REAL LETTER!!

Letter from the Stake President:

Brethren,

It has come to our attention that our decline in converts and the increase of name removal requests is largely due to the widespread use of the internet. Therefore, please instruct your ward members of the two (2) following policy changes:

1) Members who wish to remain in good standing should only use Church approved sites. Tracking cookies provided on church owned sites will be used as evididence in an ecclesiastical court if the computer has been accessing sites containing criticism or unofficial documentation relating to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

2) The increase in video technologies can be a useful tool to combat the vast, and unflattering, information available online. Therefore, please instruct ward members to “click” repeatedly on videos that show the Church in a positive light, thereby making them more prominent and non-members more willing to take the Missionary discussions.

Your cooperation in this matter is mandatory.

Sincerely,

Stake President XXXXXXXXXXXX X XXXXXXX

I’ve never said the LDS don’t sing Christian hymns and the reverence for Joseph Smith really is close to worship (the ‘nativity’ at BYU, “Praise to the Man”, the “Praise to the Man” missionary farewell card, etc).

The Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, etc. don’t have similar songs or devotions or things to their founders.

The closest would be the Catholic veneration of Saints and even then I don’t recall hymns to/about them.

LOL. I reposted the letter here, it was obvious to me that it was a joke, I didn’t think I needed to put a disclaimer in.

That said, SLC has warned members about the use of the internet and the information about the LDS church online so it is not THAT much of an impossibility.

I was discussing this with my SIL just last night. If the LDS ask why they don’t use Crosses they will say “we don’t focus on His death, we focus on the resurrection.”

Yet, they don’t do anything special for Easter either. No sunrise services, nothing, just a regular meeting with occasionally a talk on the resurrection. So they really don’t focus on the RESURRECTION either.

Except THIS year. THIS year Easter falls on the weekend of the all important “GENERAL CONFERENCE”, so the LDS will gather to watch a satellite feed of their apostles and prophets from SLC rather than their normal meetings.

I went to my first sunrise service last year and WOW it was awesome. Worshiping God as the sun came up and rejoicing in the resurrection of my Lord.

And I do try to be fair. I have on here refuted some of the incorrect things some say about the LDS. In my mind, there is more than enough to debate about the LDS church history/doctrine without making stuff up.

Which is also why I take blanket comments about spreading mistruths personally. I don’t need to make stuff up.

And so we continue...
_________________________________________________

8. Nana:

That Catholics and Protestants are not the whore of Babylon and its OK to join them ???

8. EW:

Mormons do NOT teach the Catholic Church is the “whore of Babylon.” We believe the distortions of the scriptures occured shortly after their creation. In the case of the New Testament, during the first and early second century. In the case of the Old Testament; much earlier as evidenced by the conflicting versions of biblical vorlages (e.g., Samaritan Pentatech, DSS Jeremiah, LXX, etc.).

Nan’s additional Comments...

Joey Smith taught that the Catholic Church was the Whore of Babylon and all good mormons must sustain Joey Smith as a prophet who told the truth always and in all things or they dont get a temple recommend...

9. Nana:

That males do not need to practice polygamy to go to the mormon after life and there is no marriage or sex in the mormon after life ???

9. EW:

Well, since polygamy is the natural condition of humanity and only recently has fallen out of favor due to the triumph of monogamy since the 17th century; I find the entire issue quite silly. God explicitly approves of polygamy no less than six times in the Bible.

Polygamy is not a natural condition of humanity...its deviant and a perversion like homosexuality...God didnt invent it and God has something important to say about it...Thou shall not commit adultery Exodus 20:14 Galations 5:19

As for the 17th Century, Joey Smith was highly in favor of it in the 19th Century..

No I dont understand the sex obsession of Joey Smith...

And of course God never did favor polygamy in any century...

10. Nana:

That dead dunking just gets silly mormons wet but doesnt save anyone ???

10. EW:

Jesus said we must be born of water and of the spirit. Otherwise we cannot enter into God’s kingdom. We believe him thus believe in the practice of baptism.

Nan’s addition comments

Jesus never ssid to dead dunk anyone..He said to baptise and He meant a willing participate..and He meant while they were alive...Once you are dead its to late

11. Nana:

That mormon temples are just ugly buildings that millions of dollars were wasted on and are not necessary to get anyone to God ???

11. EW:

Your opinion and irrelevant.

Nana’s additional comments...

I dont know about that...Monson doesnt think that the temples are irrelevant...he seems to think that the temples are necessary to get the mormons to God...”they point to god” etc...And if they are so “irrelevant” why are millions of tithe money and human teeth spent to build them ??? The millions of dollars spent on those useless ugly buildings is quite real and could have been spent to feed and cloth the poor...How about just selling those “irrelevant” useless buildings and doing just that ??? As for anyones opinion, only God’s counts and He said not to build Him anything ...He doesnt dwell in houses...

Did you know that the Methodists had brush arbor Holy Ghost meetings in North East Tennessee 200 years ago and many were saved...Yes no buildings.. outside under the sky ... just God invited into the meetings...

12. Nana:

That we were never in heaven before we were born and after death with be our first visit ???

12. EW:

Belief in the pre-existence is the ONLY was to resolve one of the greatest problems facing Christian philosophy today: how to solve the problem of undeserved suffering if God is all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful. If you believe that you were an adult spirit offspring of God who was given a choice to experience undeserved suffering in exchange for a greater good; God then maintains his omnibenevolent and omnipotent natures.

Nana’s additional comments...

Christians have never needed a “Belief in the pre-existence” to solve anything... We started our existance in our mothers wombs...we were not anywhere before that...

Sperm met egg.....Hullo.. and there you were...

13. Nana:

That the occultist Joey Smith was not visited by God and Jesus ??? (Be careful on this one. Brigham Young denied it happened. He said it was only an angel)

13. EW:

I believe it. I can’t prove it but neither can you disprove it since we both weren’t there.

Nan’s additional comment...

True we werent there. But I can read what Joey Smith had to say about the so called “first vision” and he claims it happened. And Brigham Young said it didnt. Are you saying that because you were not there you dont know if Joey Smith is telling the truth ??? That it may not have happened ??? But you choice to believe it anyway ??? What if it was proven that it didnt happen ??? Brigham Young doubted it..

Dont you have to believe the “first vision” happened without any room for doubt in order to get a temple recommend...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

are temple recommends “irrelevant” now ???

14. Nana:

That mormonism is not Christianity ???

14. It is hard to claim with a straight face that a religion that teaches Jesus Christ is God, the Son of God, who was born of the virgin Mary, who died on the cross for our sins, who was resurrected after three days and is the only way to heaven could be anything but a Christian faith.

Nan’s additional comments...

I bet its hard to keep a straight face when you are trying to defend a religion that claims you have to practice polygamy, have more than one “wife” in order to become a god and have your own planet and own harem of sex slaves...

A religion that claims the VIRGIN Mary had sex with God in order to get pregnant with Jesus. In this one you call her the Virgin Mary, but back in #6 you said “We believe God the Father is the literal father of the physical body of Jesus.” That “literal” means sex, Edward. Your own mormon leaders have said for 180 years that Jesus was concieved the same way we were concieved. That’s no Christianity...

There’s your follow up answers, Edward...

Mormonism is not Christianity...

Yes under the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the united states, you have the right to practice your religion...

Mormons have the right just like Wiccans, Hindus, Buddists, Moslems, Jews, and Christians...

But none of those other religions are attempting to hijack Chrsitianity and twist it into something that Jesus would not recognize...and claim their unChristian and unBiblical beliefs are true Christianity...

If you want to be a mormon fine...be a mormon...

I dont agree with your beliefs but I have my own and I’m going to continue to tell you you are wrong...

I am a Christian and I believe that God loves me and that Jesus is God, the Word, the Second person of the trinity, and that Jesus shed His Blood on the Cross and died on the Cross to save me and I believe the Christian Bible is the only word of God..

Mormonism is not Christianity..

Your Joey Smith said that...

I have said it once and I will say it again, the Internet will end the Mormon Church as we know it.

In fact, we believe women are naturally more righteous than men. This is why the Priesthood is given only to men since we need it in order to approach the spiritual level of women.
