Marco Rubio "Catholic" Senator-Elect [Florida] Attends, Donates Thousands to Hardline Prot. Church
The Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 11/3/10 | Damian Thompson

I assumed until this morning that Marco Rubio, the pro-life new senator-elect from Florida, was a Catholic. That’s because I kept reading in articles that he was “a conservative Roman Catholic”. Then I came across this curious article from Politics Daily which (without apparently realising that it is doing so) reveals that he has abandoned the faith of his Cuban parents:

What is Marco Rubio’s religion?

Rubio is a Roman Catholic.

Where does Marco Rubio worship?

Though he is Catholic, Rubio belongs to the Christ Fellowship nondenominational Church in West Kendall, Fla., where he has attended for the last six years.

Was Marco Rubio born Roman Catholic, or did he convert?

Rubio was born Roman Catholic.

What has Marco Rubio said about the Roman Catholic Church?

When asked about how his faith has sustained him, Rubio said that he derives his family’s strength from faith. “If you get the personal part of your life wrong, nothing else makes sense,” he said, adding that his most important job is father and husband, and “I try to get that right, … and certainly that comes from our faith.” As a Catholic potential senator, he has expressed a possible division (as well as an inference that his Christianity informs his morality): “For those who have the Christian faith and are in politics, there is a constant struggle between a desire to do what is right and how that sometimes may not coincide with what is popular,” he said. “I hope that, more often than not, I make the right choice.”

All very confusing: the author of the piece seems to think that attending Christ Fellowship Church is compatible with Catholicism. It is not. The congregation believes the following about the Eucharist:

I guess we agree. It’s just a lesson in terminology that I hope I can be exemplary to others in myself going by, despite whatever political correctness says. I am quite stubborn about it sometimes.

“I was stating fact—not opinion.”

What is the source of your fact?

The fact is that the Catholic vote has traditionally been Democratic, only six times has it gone Republican in Presidential elections, and four of those were simply reelections of an already incumbent, and a fifth was to elect Reagan’s veep in 1988.

The Protestant vote has only gone Democrat 3 times, 1932, 1936, and 1964.

But it can't be both.

So what you are saying is the you can quit going to Mass and live the life of a heathen and still be considered a Catholic, but if you dare to attend an Evangelical Fellowship, your Catholic Baptism is voided and you cannot be considered a Catholic?

Is that about right?

Who is a better "Catholic", Rubio or Pelosi?

Has Rubio been excommunicated?

If not, then how can you claim he is NOT a Catholic?

And on what grounds should he be excommunicated?

Those more interested in Protestant/Catholic split than is probably healthy for their soul cannot stand the fact that most Christians are not nearly as concerned as they are.

Well said. I often jokingly tell people that if and when they get to heaven, try not to be too disappointed that there are a bunch of Catholics/Protestants there (depending on who I'm speaking to).

Great question!

Who is a better "Catholic", Rubio or Pelosi?

I suspect most RC's that jumped in with their knee jerk reaction to this are having second thoughts. There is a huge gulf between RC's and Evangelicals, but do they really want to support a pro abortion lefty over a conservative Christian? RC's really need to start looking in the mirror when they start throwing around the word bigot.

The reason Miers was pulled from the SCOTUS nomination was because Evangelicals were not confident in how pro-life and conservative she was. The same Evangelicals supported Alito because they were confident in him in those areas.
