They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Some pictures are so powerful that there are not enough words to spin away their message. One scene that the media hoped you would never know about played out before their cameras at the political stunt gun buyback held by Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik last week. The crews got the pictures, learned the story, and then deliberately tossed them in an online gallery with a hundred others pictures, or left on the television newsroom cutting floor. She said she came to sell a gun to feed herself for two weeks....

These shark pups can sense the electrical field of potential predators.Although shark pups are born with all the equipment they'll ever need to defend themselves and hunt down food, developing embryos still stuck in their egg cases are vulnerable to predators. But a new study finds that even these baby sharks can detect a potential predator, and play possum to avoid being eaten. Every living thing gives off a weak electrical field. Sharks can sense this with a series of pores—called the ampullae of Lorenzini—on their heads and around their eyes, and some species rely on this electrosensory ability to...

MSNBC talk show host Lawrence O’Donnell took aim at the Bible on his broadcast The Last Word this week, claiming that it has no place at the upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama. In discussing the matter, O’Donnell began to claim that no one believes the Bible, and that it has no business in being a part of the Inauguration. These actions are targeted in the following three key areas: ■Better background checks ■Taking military-grade weapons off the streets and out of criminals’ hands ■Better data, better...

Is there any other way to celebrate such an auspicious holiday as National Pastrami Day than with a #19 from Langer's? Nope. That meat. That bread. The slaw. No doubt there's a line at the MacArthur Park deli right at this moment, so we recommend getting it to go; the wait won't be as bad. Or just call ahead and they'll bring your order out to your car. Yep, curbside pastrami. Nothing better (704 S. Alvarado St.; 213-483-8050).

... Julianne Moore won an award for playing Sarah Palin in Game Change, because of course she did. And then, apparently, the director of the movie was gushing about how “brave” she was for doing that. That’s right: Daring to depict Sarah Palin in an unflattering light is an act of bravery. In Hollywood.

During a Monday press conference in the White House, President Barack Obama was asked about his seeming lack of interest in socialization with other members of the political establishment in Washington. Obama said that, while he is a friendly person, it takes two to socialize and Republicans are generally not interested in being seen with him. He blamed “media that is preferred by Republican constituencies” for creating an environment in which a Republican politician seen with Obama has to fear a primary fight in their next election. President Obama said he does socialize with members of Congress from the other...

Craft chain Hobby Lobby said it has found a way to delay compliance with the Obamacare mandate, which requires companies to cover contraception in their employees' health care. Pastor Rick Warren has warned that religious freedom, at the heart of the company's battle, might become this decade's civil rights movement. The evangelical Christian-owned company plans to shift the beginning of its employee health plan to temporarily avoid $1.3 million a day in fines for each day since Jan. 1 that it did not comply with the Affordable Care Act. Without the delay, the fine would now have totaled $18.2 million....

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will seek to institute some of the nation’s strictest gun-licensing requirements, ban assault weapons and restrict visitor access to schools in one of the most expansive government responses sought to last month’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Perhaps most controversially, O’Malley (D) will ask the General Assembly to force prospective gun owners to provide fingerprints to state police, complete a hands-on weapon-familiarization and gun-safety course, and undergo a background check to be licensed. And the governor is seeking new measures to keep guns out of the hands of those with mental illness who show violent tendencies....
