Before devoting his time to defeating the British in the Revolutionary War and being the first president of the United States, George Washington enjoyed brewing his own beer. A handwritten recipe for "small beer" created by Washington in 1757, while serving in the Virginia militia, has been published by the New York Public Library. The recipe, which was found in Washington's "Notebook as a Virginia Colonel", lists the ingredients as bran hops, yeast and molasses –... "Take a large Sifter full of Bran Hops to your Taste," Washington instructed. "Boil these 3 hours then strain out 30 Gall into a...

IT sounds like a load of XXXX but beer saved this horse's life after he was struck down with a bout of potentially deadly colic. Diamond Mojo, a six-year-old Australian waler, had been given up for dead by his owner Steve Clibborn after being struck down with a bout of potentially deadly colic. So, as desperate men do in desperate times, Steve turned to the bottle not for himself, but for his horse. "I had pretty much kissed him goodbye," he said. "I had spent 23 hours straight with him but nothing worked and then I remembered an old bush...

Even though green beer will flow freely today, one of the biggest drinking holidays of the year, few beer connoisseurs understand its appeal. "I don't knock people who drink green beer," says Kieran Folliard, who owns four Irish pubs — Liffey in St. Paul, Cooper in St. Louis Park and Kieran's and the Local in Minneapolis. "But to be quite honest, I wouldn't drink it unless I was stuck in the desert and it was the only thing around." Sean O'Byrne, who opened Great Waters Brewing Co. 15 years ago today, won't touch the stuff for any reason. "Never have,...

Albany, NY Updated 06:18 p.m., Wednesday, March 16, 2011: The suspensions have started. Three University at Albany students who were involved in the destruction of property during the Kegs and Eggs riots have been suspended. All those who participated in destruction and mayhem face suspension and possible expulsion from the school. The school sent out that warning Wednesday, one day before St. Patrick's Day, to remind students that drinking heavily carries consequences beyond a mere hangover. "As students are identified to the university by the Albany Police Department as participants in the egregious behaviors of Saturday, they will be temporarily...

ALBANY, NY -- A beer-soaked Saturday morning melee described by residents as the worst in recent memory is forcing the city to again confront the fraught relationship between full-time Pine Hills residents and the college students who often treat the neighborhood as their off-campus playground. By Monday, the number of college students facing charges had topped 40 as police and prosecutors vowed to use the drunken revelers' own cellphone videos to build cases against them. "Let me deliver this message to you," Albany County District Attorney David Soares said. "Many of you who felt, or believe now, that you've gotten...

Greetings! I have been trying to drink as much Japanese beer as possible lately. It's an easy way to show your support, be cool, and also get your daily dose of beer! Remember, beer is proof that God loves us very much... and drinking Japanese beer is also just fine. Now, some Japanese beer is made in Canada, but the money probably flows back to Japan somehow. Not sure what the situation in Japan will be down the road, so drink up fellow patriots...

A Cardiff University study has established a link between pub violence and happy hour-style drinking promotions. The findings also show that pub staff themselves need to do more to stop heavily intoxicated customers from continuing to drink. The team studied pubs and nightclubs with a history of violence across five different cities and towns in the UK. Customers entering and leaving the premises were breathalysed. The team also recorded data about the price of beer and any drink promotions at each establishment. Their findings were then linked to police and hospital data about assaults inside or immediately outside the premises....

Barack Obama will go down in history as, among other things, the first president to brew his own beer in the White House. The blog Obama Foodorama reported this week that the president's Super Bowl party featured a selection called "White House Honey Ale,” brewed right at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The blog said the president and first lady Michelle Obama bought the equipment with their own funds (an aide did not specify when) in advance of serving it at the February gathering.

Police in northern Ohio say a man who was asked during a traffic stop whether he'd been drinking took a swig from an open can of beer and told the officer, "Yes." According to Cleveland's WJW-TV, the Elyria police report says 25-year-old Stephen Supers was pulled over early Wednesday because the officer had observed him speeding. The report says that after Supers took the drink in front of the officer he failed a series of field sobriety tests. GAINESVILE, Fla. (KTLA) -- The former president of a Gainesville, Fla. chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, is facing DUI charges, according to the Gainesville Sun. 48-year-old Debra Oberlin was pulled over last week after officers reportedly spotted her driving erratically. She blew a .234 and a .239 on a pair of breathalyzer tests, the Sun reports, well over Florida's .08 legal limit. Oberlin apparently told officers she'd had four beers. Oberlin has not commented. She was the president of Gainesville's MADD chapter for three years. The chapter closed in 1996 due to a lack of funds.

For anyone who has been to a music festival, a big gig - or even just a loaded bar full of thirsty punters, there's an invention that will make your life easier... and possibly a little bit drunker. It should also light up the dollar-signed eyes of bar owners everywhere. It's an invention that has literally come from the ground up, and uses common-sense technology to fill a plastic beer glass from the bottom

A small Mexican brewery has produced what it claims is the world's first beer specifically targeted at the homosexual community. The beer, which has a slight honey flavour, will initially be marketed to homosexual consumers in Mexico, Colombia and Japan. The Minerva brewery said that the "Artisan Honey-Ales" would appeal to a section of the beer-drinking public that had so far been snubbed by larger brewers. "We're out in the market with great respect with the idea of offering a product directed to the gay-lesbian community that has been ignored for too long but is important and very demanding", Dario...

HELSINKI - Finnish scientists are analyzing a golden, cloudy beverage found in a 19th century shipwreck at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, hoping new beers can be modeled on an ancient brew. The VTT Technical Research Center of Finland said Tuesday that through chemical analysis it aims to determine the ingredients and possibly the recipe used in brewing what it called "one of the world's oldest preserved beers." VTT scientist Arvi Vilpola said he had "the honorable task" of being the one on the research team to sample the brew. "It was a little sour and you could taste...
