Thousands of military, overseas and provisional ballots will soon be added to Georgia’s vote count, another trove of votes besides those already accounted for. There were 8,899 absentee ballots from military and overseas voters that hadn’t yet been returned to election offices in Georgia as of Thursday morning, according to the secretary of state’s office. Another 17,529 overseas ballots had already been returned and counted. Military and overseas ballots have a later deadline than other absentee ballots, according to federal law.

  • GOP looks west, Dems look east, in Pa. House clash

HARRISBURG, Pa.—The fall legislative campaign pits Republicans trying to draw votes from conservative Democrats in western Pennsylvania against Democrats hoping to capitalize on favorable voter registration trends in suburban Philadelphia. At stake is control of the House of Representatives, which swung over to the Democrats by a single seat in the pay-raise-outrage election two years ago that sent 24 incumbent lawmakers home in defeat. The balance of power in the state Senate, currently 29-21 in favor of the Republicans, is not likely to see significant change. Five weeks before an election, the campaign map is taking shape in a year...
  • Military Update: House, Senate committees reject Tricare hike

The Senate Armed Services Committee voted followed its counterpart in the House by rejecting the Bush administration’s call to raise Tricare fees and deductibles for a second year. They also rejected raising Tricare retail drug co-payments. Senators want to delay action on any such changes for at least another year. Lawmakers and their staffs want to study the final report of the Task Force on the Future of Military Healthcare, which is due in December. Here are some other details from the Senate committee bill: * Accumulated leave: The Senate committee voted to allow any servicemember to carry up to...
  • Military Gets Big Pay Raise

Military people next January would get a 3.5 percent pay raise, under a compensation package voted Wednesday by the House armed services’ subcommittee on military personnel. In shaping the personnel section of the fiscal 2008 defense authorization bill, the subcommittee approved other initiatives too to please healthcare beneficiaries, surviving spouses and some disabled retirees forced from service short of 20 years by combat-related injuries. The Senate will mark up its version of 2008 defense bill later this month, no doubt approving a somewhat different set of personnel initiatives. A House-Senate conference later will smooth out these differences. Here are details...
  • Bush proposes huge increase in military spending

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration unveiled a 2008 defense budget on Monday that would push military spending to its highest levels since World War II - nearly $2,100 for each American - and bring the cost of the nation's five-year war on terrorism to about $600 billion. The budget plan includes a 3 percent pay increase for service members and would finance the addition of 7,000 soldiers and 5,000 Marines to the force next year. It also would spend far more on new weapons, including the replacement of aircraft, tanks, trucks and other equipment damaged or destroyed in Iraq and...
  • Plan to raise retiree TRICARE fees is ready for relaunch

Senior Defense Department officials have renewed their call to raise TRICARE enrollment fees and co-payments for under-65 military retirees and their dependents. Officials are warning anew that unless the cost of military health care is "rebalanced" - so the beneficiary pays more and the government less - the prized lifetime benefit, arguably the best in the country, "cannot be sustained" over time. Defense officials said they briefed key lawmakers on the planned fee increases in 2005 and that most seemed to agree they were needed. But in early 2006 - an election year - lawmakers bolted like cats from a...
  • Provision to help veterans blocked (Tricare)

Pressured by the White House and drug industry lobbyists, Congress has killed a Senate-passed provision that would have forced pharmaceutical manufacturers to grant the Department of Defense deep discounts on drugs dispensed through the Tricare retail pharmacy network. House Republicans were under enormous pressure last month to sideline a provision inserted in the 2007 defense authorization bill that would cut 40 percent or more off the cost of many drugs available to Tricare beneficiaries through retail network pharmacies and stores. DoD officials contend the Veterans Health Care Act of 1992 requires drug makers to include Tricare retail drugs in Federal...

We were notified on Friday, May 19th that they were "pulling the plug" immediately with no time for us to notify our customers." When did this country go communist? This is freaking nuts. • Retirees Dig in Heels Over Tricare Fees

Ignoring the intimidating props — boxes of angry letters from thousands of military retirees — senior Defense officials and military leaders appeared March 29 before a contentious House subcommittee to make their case for hiking Tricare fees sharply for under-65 retirees and their families. In the verbal sparring that ensued, Pentagon leaders gave as good as they got. But no lawmaker took the role of referee. All threw punches on behalf of retirees, and treated with kid gloves a second panel of witnesses representing dozens of pro-retiree military associations and veteran groups. The Pentagon’s plan to boost out-of-pocket Tricare costs...
