Lake Superior posted its third-straight month of above-normal water-level increases, rising 5.5 inches in July compared to the usual 1.5-inch increase for the month. The International Lake Superior Board of Control reported Wednesday that the big lake is 2.3 inches below its long-term normal and is 6 inches above the level on Aug. 1, 2012. Lake Superior had its second-highest monthly increase in May and rose more than usual in June, thanks to well-above-normal precipitation across much of its watershed. The big lake continues its trend back to normal water levels after several years of below-normal levels.

The City owned gas company is asking for a 3.5% rate hike for "capital improvements". The real reason for the rate hike is hidden way down in the text: The natural gas department has scheduled $6.9 million in improvements between 2014 and 2017.“ These are improvements that are being mandated by regulatory authorities,” Benning said. “They’re non-negotiable unless we want to get fined.”

Overnight trips took abuse by priests beyond Milwaukee Child sexual abuse by priests described in documents released this week by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee wasn’t limited to southeastern Wisconsin. Child sexual abuse by priests described in documents released this week by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee wasn’t limited to southeastern Wisconsin. Rather, the incidents occurred from Chicago to California to the Caribbean — and also the Northland, frequently on overnight trips taken by priests and children. Of 42 priest files released Monday by the Milwaukee Archdiocese and reviewed by the News Tribune, 22 contain references to child molestation on camping trips,...

You knew the mainstream media was biased, but this is incredible. It was revealed today that CBS News President David Rhodes' brother is Obama Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes, who was instrumental in rewriting the Benghazi talking points. But it gets worse. It is now learned that ABC President Ben Sherwood's sister, Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, is a Special Assistant to Barack Obama on national security affairs. But even this isn't it! CNN's deputy bureau chief, Virginia Moseley, is the wife of Tom Nides, who until February was Hillary Clinton's deputy.

In an unusual move conservative chat site Free Republic announced today that it has banned all parody postings. According to a representative of Free Republic, "We had to do something. An informal survey showed us fully 75% of all postings were amateur attempts at parody." He went on "And it is a stretch to call these things parody. Parody isn't just making up crazy stuff and putting it into the mouths of people you don't like." A frequent poster on the web site, DManA approves of the move. "Everyone loves to be tricked, fooled, and made a fool of. That's...

Pat Caddell, the Fox News Contributor and Democrat pollster who engineered Jimmy Carter’s 1976 Presidential victory, blew the lid off CPAC on Wednesday with a blistering attack on "racketeering" Republican consultants who play wealthy donors like "marks." "I blame the donors who allow themselves to be played for marks. I blame the people in the grassroots for allowing themselves to be played for suckers....It's time to stop being marks. It's time to stop being suckers. It’s time for you people to get real," he told the audience that included two top Republican consultants. . . . Caddell left no doubt...

Went skiing on some trails in N. Mn that are maintained by the State. To ski on them you need to buy a State of Mn. Ski pass. Dutifully went into the Holiday station in Tofti to buy a day pass. My friends didn't bring their wallets. They were told they could not buy a ski pass unless they provided a photo ID that could be scanned. I offered my driver license and said I'd buy theirs. Nope. Each license they issue needs a photo ID. So. No photo ID, no skiing on Mn State trails. You can still vote...
