Elephant Butte is a small city in New Mexico that calls itself the “Diamond in the Desert.” As KRQE News 13 reports, it was in this scenic location that a group of friends celebrating a bachelor party made an astonishing find – a giant fossil of the tusk and skull of what’s believed to be a Stegomastodon. According to the University of Nebraska State Museum, Stegomastodons were, “the last surviving member of a lineage of primitive tuskers called ‘gomphotheres’ which first entered North America 15 million years ago.”

The complaint, addressed to the Department of Homeland Security by a coalition of groups, says 116 youths suffered abuse including sexual assault and beatings, were denied medical care and were not given enough food and water.

Scientists in Australia tagged a healthy 9-foot great white shark as part of program to track these animals. Four months later they found the tracking device washed up on a beach. Something—something really big—had eaten this apex predator. But what creature could dine on such ferocious prey?

A 911 call made during the attack reveals more gruesome details. “They’re slinging her all over the street,” the female caller says. She said that a neighbor was using a pole to get one of the dogs to release Drame, but the animal had her by the face. “There’s blood all over,” said the caller, who added that a third dog was chasing neighbors down the street.

Today, June 6, marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the fateful evening during World War II in 1944 that Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, to battle Hitler's Nazi forces and liberate mainland Europe. One of those soldiers, on his very first combat assignment, was a young Canadian named James Doohan, who later when on to great fame as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott on Star Trek: The Original Series. That bit of trivia -- and the story that goes along with it -- may be old news to longtime fans, but to the Star Trek newcomers out there, it's...

But the celebration over one of the school's teams was just a ruse. That soon became apparent when Principal Chris Glass grabbed the microphone. "Somebody has made a huge mess again in this gymnasium," Glass told the gathered students and faculty. "Oh no. What to do?" Spaulding was called in to the gym and cleaned up in a much different way — students presented him with a check for $1,900, money that they had begun collecting earlier in the year. The funds will be used to fly his family to Italy to visit his son Jacob, who is stationed there...

The father of a 12-year-old girl who lost her battle with cancer last week says he was shocked to find she had left behind a long, handwritten message on the back of a mirror. "It was a stand-up mirror in her room, and it was always lent up against the wall so we never saw behind it," Dean Orchard, of Leicester, England, told the Leicester Mercury. "She never mentioned it, but it's the kind of thing she'd do."

Tahmooressi. God help us all.” The message references U.S.M.C. Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who is being held in a Mexican prison after mistakenly crossing the border with registered guns.

Best way to survive is not being close to any problems. Like I describe in my survival course about my experience in Balkan war I missed my chance to bug out in time. I ended up surrounded by enemy army and trapped in city for a year without power and regular resources. Everyone fighting for the little what was left and being shot at by snipers and artillery from enemies did not make experience any better. There are many reasons why people fail to bug out. Last week Jay (guy I run this website with) left Bangkok because of military...

British woman Katherine Tee is saying she spotted what she believes is the missing Malaysian Air flight MH370 while she was sailing. She saw in early March, but is only now coming forward because she did not believe her eyes at the time. Tee said that while she and her husband Marc Horn were sailing across the Indian Ocean from India to Thailand, she spotted what looked like a plane on fire during the night of March 7. She thought she was hallucinating, but after the media coverage, she looked up the flight plan of the aircraft and discovered their...

A 94-year-old man who fought for the U.S. in World War II is heading to France for D-Day ceremonies, a journey he nearly wasn't able to make because he didn't have the proof of his citizenship needed to get a passport. But after getting some help from social media and his local congressman to overcome his financial and passport issues, Sherwin Callander, of Alabama, was set to board a plane Monday night for Paris. Callander heard last month about ceremonies for the 70th anniversary of D-Day and said he thought it would be meaningful to attend. He hadn't been back...

I told Vivian that some cultures believe the eagle is a symbol, not only of patriotism and dignity, but a messenger between heaven and earth. She nodded solemnly. "I'd say the eagle had a very good eye when he landed on Maurie, and he was respected," she said. "I miss him," said Vivian as she picked up the photo. "He was a good man and a good provider." "The eagle couldn't have picked a better person," said Kiefner. He paused. "This has been kind of fun hasn't it?" Tears welled in Vivian's eyes.

It is OK if you think that government is corrupt and incompetent, I think that too. It is OK to have weapon in your home, and will and knowledge to use it, and it is very good if you think that TV is full of crap. I think too that S. is gonna hit the fan, and that it makes sense to have bug out location and bug out bag, and lots of cans and ammo. So we are clear that we agree that all of the above (and lots more) make perfect sense. But one thing does not make...

Prosecutors seeking a death penalty conviction of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on Wednesday said the FBI at the time of his arrest last year believed he and his brother Tamerlan had been trained by a terrorist group because of the sophistication of their weapons and tradecraft. The Chechen immigrants are alleged to have built the two pressure cooker improvised explosive devices that detonated Monday, April 15, 2013 near the race's finish line, killing three Bostonians and wounding more than 260 other marathon spectators. "These relatively sophisticated devices would have been difficult for the Tsarnaevs to fabricate successfully without...

The sneezing passenger in seat 5B. The coughing, hacking child seated between you and the aisle. Catching something during a flight in one of these situations is something that many of us have worried about. But a new study suggests that there are other ways to catch nasty bugs from planes. The study found that certain types of bacteria can survive for up to a week on the inside surfaces of aircraft cabins — including your armrest, your plastic tray table, the metal toilet button, the window shade and your seat pocket. To determine this, researchers at Auburn University took...

Los Alamos National Laboratory packed 57 barrels of nuclear waste with a type of kitty litter believed to have caused a radiation leak at the federal government's troubled nuclear waste dump, posing a potentially "imminent" and "substantial" threat to public health and the environment, New Mexico officials said Monday. State Environment Department Secretary Ryan Flynn issued a formal order giving the lab two days to submit a plan for securing the waste containers, many of which are likely stored outdoors on the lab's northern New Mexico campus or at temporary site in west Texas.
