    Take them out of the scouts. The Boy Scouts have to be abandoned now.

    We cannot surrender simply because the perverts won one battle.
    "Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"
    - Belushi

    On my honor, I will do my best
    To do my duty
    to God and my country
    and to obey the Scout Law;
    To help other people at all times;
    To keep myself physically strong,
    mentally awake
    and morally straight.

    Surrendering BSA to perversion is not doing my duty to God or to my country, and it is the opposite of helping other people and keeping morally straight.

    A Scout is:
    * Trustworthy,
    * Loyal,
    * Helpful,
    * Friendly,
    * Courteous,
    * Kind,
    * Obedient,
    * Cheerful,
    * Thrifty,
    * Brave,
    * Clean,
    * and Reverent.

    If I am to be Trustworthy and Loyal, how can I abandon boys who have placed their trust in me and refuse to show loyalty to the boys in my Troop?
    If I am to be Helpful, Friendly, and Kind, how can I leave these boys vulnerable to the perverts who have been dreaming of this opportunity to take innocent boys into the woods away from their comfort zone for decades?
    If I am to be Obedient to God's laws, Brave, Clean, and Reverent, how can I disregard the words of Jesus [Matt 18:5-6] on those who cause those children to stumble, how can I back away from a fight for the safety of the next generation?

    No, I'm in this for the children and for the duration. I'll surrender if there is no chance of preserving Scouting as a safe refuge for children, but I will not surrender based on a single betrayal by the leadership.

    I hope there is some plan for protecting younger, smaller boys from predatory older boys protected by political correctness. I’ve always liked the BSA pocket knife, although I miss the sheath knife. No, I won’t comment on how those BSA items might relate to this topic.

    I’m almost there, but we can’t go on with medical costs going up %10 a year. The reason we’re in this mess is having too many people purchasing medical care with other people’s money. It has too stop somewhere and I’m willing to suffer to do that.

    Let's look at this from a different perspective - one that I consider the right perspective, even though it is rarely articulated.

    Accepting your number that medical costs are going up 10% per year, that is a VERY good thing if we are getting what we pay for. Look at the economy as a whole, and imagine it is growing at 2% per year real growth with medical costs 20% of the economy. What is the best place to spend that extra wealth?

    Should we spend that extra money on more trinkets from China?

    Should we spend that extra money on more restaurant meals with larger portions and double desserts?

    Personally, I think the best possible place to spend that money, where I would choose to spend that money from my own wallet, is on improved medical care.

    We are not spending a lot more for the same checkup on the sniffles. We are in most cases spending a lot more for medicines that treat conditions that used to require surgery. We are in most cases spending a lot more for surgeries that treat conditions that used to be crippling or fatal. We are in most cases spending a lot more for devices that allow my father to remain mobile despite his knee damage in Korea, and allow my mother to see despite a condition that would have blinded her just a decade ago. That is a VERY good use of our money. What ObamaCare will do is stifle that innovation, so that we will find few new treatments, just cheaper alternatives to existing treatments. I rather like the idea of curing conditions that are currently crippling or fatal, and I'm willing to pay more to get more.

    There are areas where medical effort is being wasted and costs are non-productive, but they are mostly due to excessive government intrusion or perverse insurance incentives. If we can reform malpractice - get rid of the frivolous lawsuits - we can cut the wasteful medical spending. If we can reduce the frivolous record keeping requirements, we can cut wasteful spending. If we can return to insurance as coverage for major, unexpected expenses instead of comprehensive coverage of sniffles check ups, birth control for party girls, and any other service on demand, consumers will have an incentive to control costs. But the idea that more government involvement will improve quality and cut costs strikes me as optimistic to the point of absurdity.

    In Los Angeles DHS put a chopper in the air and told Tea Party protesters they could not be on federal property. They had to move away from the building.

    Interesting. I was under the impression that "federal" property belonged to us, the people, but apparently America has been fundamentally transformed - as promised.

    Only 60% thinks the Supreme Court should use the Constitution as the basis of their decisions? Is 40% of our nation really that uneducated?

    This is good news. The general public is better educated than the Supreme Court, where at most five of nine justices ever agree that the Constitution should be their guide. We just have to make sure that our kids are learning the truth - and it would be nice to get more conservatives in the schools to teach history and "social studies" (the modern term for history based as much on feelings as on facts) from a pro-American perspective so that the children of "Living Constitution" liberals will have a chance.

    Two Canadian teens were handed a year’s probation ...

    I don't have pets, but you don't need your own cat to know that this was evil [Obama, take notes: evil exists and it's not just an equally valid perspective, not even if you want these criminals and the cat to all "show restraint"]. My suggestion? A minimum of two years in solitary confinement, followed by some sort of halfway house to reteach or more likely teach for the first time the basic social constraints that civilized people follow. I wouldn't object to ten or even twenty years in prison. The family that they victimized won't recover that soon, and I don't see why the criminals should have gotten off easier than their victims.

  • The Importance Of Age And Experience

    RogerD to Kaslin
    Governor Palin is well over the minimum age chosen by the Founding Fathers, and she has experience to match the most highly regarded presidents in our history. Four presidents generally ranked in the top fifteen by historians have had experience comparable to Governor Palin’s prior to assuming office: Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Grover Cleveland.

    Sarah Palin spent four years as a City Council Member for Wasilla, Alaska, six years as Mayor of Wasilla, and two years as Governor of Alaska.

    FDR spent just over two years in the New York State Senate, eight years as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and four years as Governor of New York.

    Theodore Roosevelt three years in the New York State Assembly, two years as Governor of New York, one year as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and less than one year as Vice President of the United States.

    Woodrow Wilson spent eight years as President of Princeton University and two years as Governor of New Jersey.

    Grover Cleveland spent two years as Sheriff of Erie County, two years as Mayor of Buffalo, and two years as Governor of New York.

    Overall, I’d say that Palin’s background is comparable with that of several presidents considered highly successful, even considering that her state has a smaller population than the other two states on the list.

    While Obama has been running for office for as long as Palin has been running a state, I find it hard to consider the two tasks as comparable preparation.

  • Teacher-student sex not a felony, union says

    If they’re over 18 it isn’t really a crime is it? It’s just grounds for losing your teaching certification I imagine.

    In many states it is a crime for a teacher to have sex with a student, even if the student is 18. Considering that teachers have unique access to students and are expected to act in loco parentis, in a parental role, many people consider this particular abuse of a teaching position to be an action that merits prosecution as a felony. As a teacher, I agree with those who want it to be illegal and not just grounds for firing.

    You're going to send your daughter to school for close to 200 days a year, where her future depends on what we teach her and even what we write about her in letters of recommendation, and your tax dollars are going to pay for us to perform those duties whether you like it or not. Is it too much to ask that all teachers keep their hands to themselves when they teach?

  • ACORN Statement on the Value of Community Organizing

    09/05/2008 10:39:53 AM PDT · 20 of 44
    RogerD to mukraker
    The fact that they marginalize our success ... people are empowered ... develop leadership skills ... building organizations and developing leadership ... worked individually and collectively to organize innovative grassroots campaigns on a number of critical issues ... employs 400 organizers that carry a huge responsibility of helping disenfranchised people ... better schools, financial justice, living wages, community improvement, immigration, healthcare, predatory lending, voter engagement and utilities ... ... ACORN’s victories amount to $15 billion ... Community organizers handling such awesome responsibilities is no laughing matter," Hurd concluded.

    I'm still confused on what they do. I didn't see anything about ensuring manufacturing or retail businesses could operate in those communities to provide jobs, teaching the skills that employers actually want (like showing up on time and working during work hours), or emphasizing their personal responsibility to fix their personal problems. I didn't need to be empowered. Instead, I got an education and a job. I didn't need an organizer to develop my leadership skills. Instead, I joined the Boy Scounts of America and then once I had a job took on responsibilities and produced results, so I came to be recognized as a leader by actually leading. I don't need an organizer working for "financial justice", whatever that is, because I pay my bills on time, save money for the future, and plan ahead. As for "utilities", I'm confused. My utility company has never been an issue, and I've heard most of them are the same for customers who pay their bills.

    So, now that ACORN has spoken up, what exactly is it that they do, and why do adults need someone else to do this for them?

  • Community Organizers Fight Back - Demand an Apology from Palin (Barking Moonbats Alert)

    Organizers demand apology from Alaska governor, say “we’re working to clean up your mess!”

    Does anyone want to tell these community organizers the secret that their politicians keep from them? Almost all of the community organizers in the country are in states with liberal governors. Have they even considered that the mess they're cleaning up in the "neighborhoods that have been hit hardest" might be more closely related to their own liberal politicians than to the republican governor of a state that doesn't need community organizers?

    That's not quite true though. Alaska has community organizers who provide jobs for those in need. They are called "employers" and they organize their own savings and people in the community to give working people an even better deal than those in need would get from a welfare office and an organizer combined. Alaska also has organizers running a service to make sure that the young get the skills they need to go to college or get a job. Those organizers are called "principals". The best organizers of all are the ones who make sure that teenagers mostly do what they're supposed to do. In most Alaska communities, those organizers are called "parents" and most of them know what their job is and make it their top priority.

    The problem isn't just that failing cities have too few organizers cleaning up the mess created by politicians - namely by their local politicians. It's that they have the wrong kinds of organizers. They need parents who parent their children, employers who feel safe providing a day's pay in the community and can expect to receive a day's work for that pay, and principals who are supported by parents who see their job as quality control over both the schools and their own children to make sure that their kids are learning the things that matter.

    Palin's on the ticket because she's a woman and she isn't afraid to engage in the Republicans' mean-spirited personal attacks.

    Let's look at her personal attacks:

    I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a "community
    organizer," except that you have actual responsibilities

    They loved their country in good times and bad,
    and they are always proud of America

    We prefer candidates who don't talk to us one way in
    Scranton and another way in San Francisco

    I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion —
    I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this
    country

    Think about why each of those lines was effective. Now, let's look at the professional and unbiased coverage of Governor Palin (usually referred to as a small-town mayor, as if her nearly two years of running an entire state with 86% approval doesn't count):

    raise the question ... whether Sarah Palin has been
    enough of a hands-on mother.

    Not only do we have a woman with five children, ...
    special needs, ... 17-year-old child will need ... the
    grandchild ... .enormous distraction for a new vice
    president

    Her first priority has to be her children

    Trig is really the child of Sarah Palin's daughter

    picture of Bristol Palin pregnant with baby Trig

    guilty of trying marijuana in her reckless youth

    Palin ... affair with her husband’s business partner

    political reasons for preventing her daughter from
    getting an abortion

    irresponsible to have kept (Trig) ... knowing he would
    have Down Syndrome

    I see their point. There are obviously some nasty and mean spirited attacks going primarily in one direction, and under the rules of Washington Media, "Mayor" Sarah Palin needs to apologize. Of course, the reason we all love Governor Palin is that we know she won't apologize for violating the rules of that game.

    Obama wins-- bye bye 2012 for Hillary unless she pulls a Bobby Kennedy /Gene McCarthy. McCain wins --she faces Palin in 2012

    Hillary has a third option, and it may seem like her best bet. If McCain wins and Palin disappoints us in office (perhaps in part because she is damaged by two months of vicious attacks), then Hillary doesn't have to run against Palin. In that case, she doesn't want to have angered conservative and moderate women by jumping on Palin this year, but she doesn't want to anger black voters by betraying Obama this year. The politically expedient answer is to stand aside silently, which is what Hillary is doing. I don't think she's flummoxed, her strategy is to let both of her enemies fight it out.

    No, having them stay home is better. If they show up and vote for Palin, they will then likely vote Dem for the rest of the ballot. If they stay home, that helps us in all the other 2008 races.

    Normally I would agree, but the behavior of a large portion of the Dem leadership has been so phenomenally offensive and revolting that we may have a new crop of GOP voters from the fallout. The crossover Dems may decide to vote out all the gross Dem incumbents. I just hope a little bit of Sarah rubs off on our old guard and they don't take the added support as license to waste our tax dollars as if they were Big Gov't Dems.

    It is fine to take the gloves off, but there should be some veracity in the statements. Obama does not have the experience to be President, but to say that Palin does, or has more than Obama is patently absurd.

    I would disagree with the term "absurd" and suggest that the perfect word is "obvious". Whether or not you agree with Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, or Wilson on politics, you have to admit that they were as ready for the job as any presidents in our history.
