POP QUIZ [KJL] 20 Quotes: Is it Reagan or W.? (Answers later today.) 1)“European discomfort with the President, however, goes beyond the political differences that preceded and will outlast his presidency. It has, as well, a personal basis. He appears to Europeans to be ill equipped for the responsibility that he bears, a kind of cowboy figure, bellicose, ignorant, with a simplistic view of the world… 2)“[The President] came to Europe to persuade people that he is not the shallow, nuclear cowboy of certain unkind assessments. Said [a] White House spokesman … on the eve of departure, ‘Some in Europe...

GDANSK, Poland--When talking about Ronald Reagan, I have to be personal. We in Poland took him so personally. Why? Because we owe him our liberty. This can't be said often enough by people who lived under oppression for half a century, until communism fell in 1989. Poles fought for their freedom for so many years that they hold in special esteem those who backed them in their struggle. Support was the test of friendship. President Reagan was such a friend. His policy of aiding democratic movements in Central and Eastern Europe in the dark days of the Cold War meant...

Filmmaker Moore Says He Has Berg Footage Associated Press NEW YORK - Filmmaker Michael Moore, whose incendiary new documentary lambastes President Bush's handling of the war, said Thursday that he has footage unused in the film of Nicholas Berg, the American civilian later beheaded in Iraq. The footage, of an interview with Berg, "is approximately 20 minutes long. We are not releasing it to the media," Moore said in a statement. "It is not in the film. We are dealing privately with the family." Neither Moore nor his representatives would describe the nature or contents of the interview with Berg,...

Rochester sailor killed in boat attack ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) Although they hadn't seen each other for almost three years, Navy Petty Officer Michael Pernaselli and his elder brother, John, an Army captain, never passed up a chance to rib each other about their military career choices. ''It was a big joke between the two of them as to who was the better, the Navy or the Army. Always a big joke,'' their father, John, his voice wavering with emotion, said Monday. Pernaselli, 27, was one of three Navy and Coast Guard servicemen killed Saturday in a waterborne suicide attack on...

washingtonpost.com 1973 Document Puts Bush on Guard Base By Mike Allen and Lois Romano Washington Post Staff Writers Thursday, February 12, 2004; Page A01 The White House last night released a document showing that President Bush was at a military base in Alabama during the last year of his National Guard service, but aides backed away from his weekend pledge to release all his military records. Bush's staff provided copies of a one-page record of a dental exam, complete with drawings of Bush's teeth, that showed he was at Dannelly Air National Guard base in Montgomery, Ala., on Jan. 6,...

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW why ordinary folks find it difficult to understand what economists are saying about the American economy, consider the question of jobs. We know a few things. We know that jobs are such an emotive political issue that one candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination promises that if elected his three top priorities will be, "jobs, jobs, jobs." And we know that when there is slack in the labor market, upward pressure on wages is reduced. This allows Alan Greenspan and his monetary policy colleagues at the Federal Reserve Board to declare inflation under control and...

<p>RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senator John Edwards, the North Carolina lawyer running for president, built a career out of winning historic jury awards for children who suffered birth defects allegedly because doctors mishandled their deliveries -- from a record $6.5 million in 1985 to a new record of $23 million in his last trial in 1997.</p>

<p>SAN FRANCISCO--An eastern visitor to these western slopes is primed beforehand on the questions he'll face when he gets home. He'll be expected to return as an expert on topless waitresses, the hippies of Hashbury and Ronald Reagan.</p>
<p>On the first question, suffice it to say after diligent research that there's quite a discrepancy between the idealized female form and its fleshy embodiment. As for the hippies, they somehow bring to mind those dropouts of another day, the mendicant monks of the Middle Ages, and strike you as more to be pitied than scorned.</p>

Just four days before Tuesday's recall election, Californians by an increasingly wide margin want to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis with Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Field Poll released today says. A survey conducted from Monday through Wednesday showed 57 percent of voters supporting the recall of Davis, while 39 percent are opposed. In the race to replace Davis, Schwarzenegger leads Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante 36 percent to 26 percent, according to the poll, which is the third this week to show the actor gaining momentum and Davis losing ground. The poll shows that support for the recall and for...

Bill Simon, former GOP gubernatorial candidate, announced today his endorsement of Arnold Schwarzenegger for governor in this October’s recall election. “It's time for all Republicans to unite behind Arnold,” said Simon. “Arnold Schwarzenegger is the right man to be governor of California.” Simon also emphasized Schwarzenegger’s fiscal conservativism when he announced his endorsement at a town hall hosted by Sean Hannity, a FOX News Channel Host and radio personality. “Arnold Schwarzenegger has laid out a set of broad principles, along with a specific set of policies that address our most urgent challenges and will put our great state back on...

Arnold Schwarzenegger traveled to Sacramento today to unveil a sweeping proposal for open government and political reform. “The people of this state do not trust their government,” Schwarzenegger said. “They feel it is corrupted by dirty money, closed doors and backroom deals. They see the contributions go in, the favors go out, and they get punished with wasteful spending and high taxes. “For democracy to be strong, we must bring the trust back to government,” Schwarzenegger said. Schwarzenegger discussed the four principal planks of his political reform proposal – an expedited Sunshine Act, a blackout period for fundraising, instant campaign...

Arnold Schwarzenegger released the following statement today regarding the legislature and governor’s neglect of California’s “Megan’s Law,” which allows for public access to information about registered sex offenders in their community. “I am upset that the legislature would adjourn and leave Sacramento without renewing the public’s right to have access to the Megan’s Law registry of sex offenders. “Megan’s Law has been a tremendous tool for parents to keep their children safe, secure and away from predators. I endorse Assembly Minority Leader Dave Cox’s call that the governor immediately reconvene the legislature to extend Megan’s Law. “If Gray Davis and...

<p>WASHINGTON — The financial godfather of the California recall election says there's no way that actor-turned-candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger can replace Gov. Gray Davis unless some Republicans in the race drop out. Darrell Issa, a Republican congressman who invested $1.75 million of his personal fortune in an effort to oust Davis, said he bases his conclusion on "pure arithmetic."</p>

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Economic Recovery Council, press conference - 8/20/03 ======= Well, first of all thank you for this incredible turnout. I would have wished to have had this kind of turnout for when I did "Last Action Hero". Anyway, I want to thank first of all my co-chairs Secretary Shultz and Warren Buffet for not only being the co-chairs but also for assembling, for helping me assemble this great team of the best and the brightest economic leaders and business leaders of California. We just finished the meeting. When I came to California 35 years ago, this was a...

Schwarzenegger Statement on the Endorsement of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association “I am honored to announce that I have received the endorsement of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. I would like to thank the members of the Association, because this means a great deal to me and to our campaign. “I have been a firm supporter of Proposition 13 for many years. I continue to strongly support it, and will continue to defend it. Think what a worse mess California would be in today if not for Prop. 13. “The Association and I worked together on Prop. 49 and now...

From September to March, the Democratic Party played the classic role of appeasers, seeking every excuse possible not to call Saddam Hussein's bluff or call him to account for his defiance of international agreements. This was no different from the role Neville Chamberlain carved out in the 1930s as Hitler defied one international arms control agreement after another on his march to war. Their appeasement threatened to undermine the international security order, and would have done so if George Bush had buckled to their pressures. In the 1930s, the Communist left also organized a "peace" movement to protest American, British...

I recently came under fire for referring to Saddam Hussein's regime as fascist. Some argued that I was wrong because the Baath Party was actually socialist. Well, both views are correct. Hussein ran a totalitarian fascist regime that in practice was similar to a totalitarian socialist regime -- or maybe it was vice versa. While there are many differences between the two, the finer ideological distinctions are generally lost on the regime's victims. In either dictatorship, the state reigns supreme. Secret police roam at will, the maximum leader's images are omnipresent in schools and workplaces, the masses are mobilized to...
