AUGUSTA — Police were called to the Maine Republican Party headquarters to investigate a threatening message that was discovered Wednesday morning. The voice-mail message directly threatened Charlie Webster of Farmington, the party's chairman, said GOP Executive Director Christie-Lee McNally. According to McNally, the message said: "A 9 mm might not be able to silence Charlie, but a .50-caliber will. And there's a lot of angry people out there, so Charlie Webster should be very careful."

AUGUSTA, Maine – Waterville mayor Paul LePage, a favorite of many in the conservative tea party movement, has been nominated by Maine Republicans to be their candidate for governor. LePage, a career businessman, says he's shocked by the overwhelming backing as he handily defeated six other candidates. He says it indicates Mainers want smaller government and more fiscal responsibility.

Tea party activists said there were at least 100 convention delegates from one group, the Maine Patriots, as well as an unknown number from another group, Maine Refounders. Support for the new platform was fairly overwhelming, well beyond what could be attributed to the tea party alone. Efforts to table it were stomped, and it passed handily.

NEW YORK – The American Psychological Association declared Wednesday that mental health professionals should not tell gay clients they can become straight through therapy or other treatments. Instead, the APA urged therapists to consider multiple options — that could range from celibacy to switching churches — for helping clients whose sexual orientation and religious faith conflict. In a resolution adopted on a 125-to-4 vote by the APA's governing council, and in a comprehensive report based on two years of research, the 150,000-member association put itself firmly on record in opposition of so-called "reparative therapy" which seeks to change sexual orientation.

FORT LAUDERDALE - To the South Florida gay community, Jonathan Bleiweiss was a pioneering, openly gay Broward sheriff's deputy who fought discrimination within that agency earlier in his career. But court documents released Tuesday portray Bleiweiss, 29, as a manipulative sex offender who preyed on illegal immigrants too scared to contact authorities. He would act like a jilted lover when the men would not return his calls or text messages, according to those records, based on victims' accounts.
