  • SB1062: Should Arizona Governor Jan Brewer veto 'Religious Freedom' bill? (POLL)

Sorry, I worded that like a butchered ballot measure - should have stated "opposition" instead of "support" and phrased differently anyway. Not that any of this is much consequence. Meanwhile on the unwanted opinion front, Sens. McCain and Flake have weighed in favoring a veto.

Thank you for posting this article. While it suggests an interesting point, it could be argued that the magnitude of attention directed toward Carrie Prejean is directly proportionate to how much room conservatives still have to grow before they/we get our act together (and the voices giving her attention are the last ones we ought to be heeding). Prejean’s lone accomplishment has been to offend a bunch of wackos and stir up a little bit of heat among the lowest rung of the already bottom-dwelling American media: entertainment reporters. As she grows in her faith, she will come to realize that semi-topless modeling shots and beauty pageants sponsored by Donald Trump are not productive ways to reflect Jesus Christ in her life (speaking not out of judgment, but from the wealth of experience that is my own pedigree of stupidity).

As far as reaching out to the young Obama voters, the only thing that will reach out to them — and it will very soon — is life smacking them upside their heads as they realize just how untenable, unjust and uninformed the Obama worldview really is. The solution is NOT, as this article inadvertently suggests, to fight dumb with dumber. Hearts and minds are changed by knowledge, wisdom and a good deal of grace - not by the poster girl du jour, and definitely not when the target audience consists of cynical postmodernists.

We should give kudos to the AP for posting a straight story that did not mention Cindy Sheehan.

Google the others - they're bad (especially Dallas Morning News).

Our business has several mobile phone (voice) and BlackBerry units (data only) through ATTCINGULAR. We have been left absolutely shell-shocked by the merger. We cannot access our account through either AT&T or Cingular, and have no way of changing plans, contacting tech support, of doing anything else because we do not exist (even though we pay several hundreds of dollars per month). Classy service. Even better, no other provider can compete when it comes to nationwide coverage, so we're stuck. We tried T-Mobile, but they sold us "special offer" devices that weren't able to pick up any of TMO's contract coverage partners and... *sigh*

Corporate customer service is an oxymoron. Customer service is dead in all but a few small enclaves of American commerce.

This documentary was featured as a Feb. 1 lead story on Yahoo.com.

I don't remember ever seeing Celsius 41.11, Michael Moore Hates America, FarenHYPE 9/11, or Michael & Me as a featured mainstream headline.

Based upon the coverage and the fact that this was a positive story pulled from an AP feed, I think it's a safe assumption to say that this is going to be a left-sympathetic production.

    I hope I'm wrong.

Point taken. Perhaps my unease is a reflection of my own personal faith/character shortcomings rather than those of the President....

I appreciate the comments and insight. Obviously, there's a lot of nuance to a Presidential address that extends beyond what I would ever wish to deal with. I just wonder whether or not Bush's lip service to Islam accomplishes more by reassuring sympathetic Arabs or validating a domestic position of pluralistic theological compromise.

I voted for and supported Bush in many ways during his campaign, and I support him now. I just can't shake a sense of uneasiness that was much easier to suppress or ignore during the either/or days of Bush/Kerry.

It's just as bad to condemn a genuine agent of God as it is to accept a tool of the devil - I'm just trying to make sure I'm not allowing myself to be given over to falsehood.

Bush is a figurehead to the extent of his portrayal by the media. He also enjoys a sort of hyper-adoration by many professing Christian individuals and congregations. The danger is that he, a fallible man, may be carrying way too much on his shoulders. Some sort of "fall" by Bush might cause far more harm to American Christianity than it might otherwise be allowed if we were a bit less charismatic (not meaning "charismatic" in a denominational sense).

Regarding Ms. Noonan, I have always gotten the impression that she is chiefly concerned about her own views and publicity. The subjects of her commentary seem to run a distant second, being useful only to the ends by which they might allow her to demonstrate her alleged expertise and "insider" perspective.

I will say that I had a bit of discomfort of my own, but only with the sort of "heaven-on-earth-in-our-time" mentality that seemed to be implied throughout the speech. Yes, we are charged with the responsibility of living for the glory God, and we should work toward that end....but let us not forget that His glory, joy and goodness will ultimately come, but it will do so in spite of us, not because of us.

The issue remains, is God using Bush, or is Bush using God? Certainly Christ's glory will not be denied, but it's also much better to be on His side when the glory is being made manifest.

Are we discerning truth, or are we just seeing what we want to see since the alternative (Kerry, Democrats, Liberalism) is so awful anyway? Can a man yielded God describe Islam as a great religion? Well, yes, in the context of it being a popular religion of vast system and scope...but is that the context? What do you make of this inclusion of the Koran in his inaugural address:

"In Americas ideal of freedom, the public interest depends on private character on integrity, and tolerance toward others, and the rule of conscience in our own lives. Self-government relies, in the end, on the governing of the self. That edifice of character is built in families, supported by communities with standards, and sustained in our national life by the truths of Sinai, the Sermon on the Mount, the words of the Koran, and the varied faiths of our people. Americans move forward in every generation by reaffirming all that is good and true that came before ideals of justice and conduct that are the same yesterday, today, and forever."

I may be entirely off-base, I don't pretend to have any answers, and I certainly don't want to contribute undue division. However, I do think that we need to take a more critical look at this man, because--like it or not--he has in many ways become a figurehead for modern Christianity in our country.

This isn't an either/or issue, though it's tempting to take the other extreme opposite the media's proactive, "agenda first, facts later" platform. It's foolish to say that the racism isn't there--I need look no further than my own family to support that argument. Of course, in many cases the racism needs to be taken in its generational context. Also, ignorant racism is much different than overt racism - sort of like modern liberalism. The quiet moderates are larger in number, but the ones actually making all the noise are few and far between.

That being said, players are also prone to coming up with excuses, and racism has certainly been a favorite. Even when Moon was in Minnesota, he was going to bat for Charlie Ward, agreeing with Ward's view that the Heisman Trophy winner would not be made a first round pick as a matter of race rather than playing ability. (Where were the Italians when Gino Torretta slipped to Round 7?)

I think Moon was a great player, but he's always been a bit out in left field on this issue. Rush addressed the issue appropriately a couple years ago, and I think the media did tone down its racially-charged rhetoric for a bit in the wake of Limbaugh's multi-network crucifixion.

*Obviously* Christians need to understand that "religion" is a mere human construct - that it evolved through natural selection and continues to progress as a helpful supplement to humanity until personhood can be understood at the crossroads where science and spirituality ultimately intersect. Or, to put it in Biblical terms, embracing all those things in scripture that are attributed to man's sinful nature and the lie of Satan.

Does it nor occur to the anything-but-Jesus apologists that perhaps the Zoroastrian faith is a corruption of God's original plan as a result of a messed-up, post-Babel world in which MANY false and distorted religions popped following widespread popular disobedience?
