• Fetal homicide bill sparks abortion debate

HELENA (AP) _ A bill that would criminalize killing or injuring a fetus sparked a fierce debate over abortion at a legislative hearing Tuesday, despite assertions by its sponsor that it had nothing to do with terminating a pregnancy. Rep. Penny Morgan, R-Billings, said her bill was meant to address violence against pregnant women and get justice for the unborn children harmed or killed in the process, such as in the Laci Peterson case in California. ``This is a bigger problem than people have ever realized,'' she told the House Judiciary Committee. Opponents called her House Bill 231 a thinly...

I’m going to have a fetus!"Marsha (excited): “That’s wonderful! Oh, I’m so happy for you. Now we both have parasites growing in us.”Jan: “Yeah, but you’re having twins. I’m so jealous.”Marsha: “Oh, I only have one now. Greg didn’t get his promotion so we decided to selectively reduce one of them.” Jan: “Aww...well, that’s a valid choice. New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 1996 included a chapter on how to repel abortion protestors or "antis"): Quotes from clinic employees: "You're going from dealing with people to dealing with what most people here at the Center consider a real hurdle, to do sterile room, because you have to deal with the actual abortion tissue. Recent Poll Reveals Most Americans Think Abortion Hurts Women CHICAGO, November 26, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A recent nationwide survey conducted by Wirthlin Worldwide has found that a majority of Americans believe that abortion is "almost always bad" for women. The findings reflect the earlier findings of an Elliot Institute poll, which found that a majority of Americans believe abortion makes women's lives worse. The poll of 1,001 Americans, conducted on behalf of Americans United for Life, found that 61 percent felt that "abortion is almost always a bad thing for a woman," whereas only 23 percent said it was almost...

The testimony undercut an earlier prosecution assertion that a single hair belonging to Laci Peterson broke in an evidence envelope. The hair fragments have been the only physical evidence presented at trial that could link Laci Peterson to her husband's boat, which prosecutors contend he used to...

"If this is murder, well, then any time a late-term fetus is aborted, they could call it murder," Morris County NOW President Mavra Stark said on Saturday. Prosecutors in California announced Friday their intention to charge Scott Peterson, 30, of Modesto, both with killing his wife and their...

The National Organization for Women is backing away from comments an official made on the decision to charge Scott Peterson with two murders in the deaths of his wife and unborn child. The furor came as the parents of the murdered Modesto, Calif., woman broke their silence to say how much they missed their daughter and hoped "the person" who had killed her would be brought to justice. The controversy was touched off on the weekend when Marva Stark, president of a NOW chapter in New Jersey, said she feared the double-murder charge could strengthen efforts to enact a ban...

In Texas, Scott couldn't be charged for the death of his son because, as one woman put it so eloquently, in Texas the child is a "no- thing" before birth. There is no way to bring a charge in civil or criminal court for the wrongful death of an unborn child who dies in Texas against his or her mother's will. HB 246, The Prenatal Protection Act http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/cgi-bin/tlo/textframe.cmd?LEG=78&SESS=R&CHAMBER=H&BILLTYPE=B&BILLSUFFIX=00246&VERSION=2&TYPE=A is being held up in the State Affairs Committee of the Texas Legislature because the Texas Medical Association doesn't want the unborn child to be recognized as a cause for malpractice. The California deaths of Laci Peterson and her unborn son are sending shock waves across America as the issue of when human life begins has been reignited. Laci's husband Scott was arrested last week following the discovery of what prosecutors say is Laci's body and that of their "biological child." Scott Peterson, who was booked on two counts of murder hours after his arrest in San Diego, is scheduled for an arraignment hearing tomorrow. If charged and convicted of double homicide, he could face the death penalty. Already, some pro-choice groups including the National Organization for Women are voicing their...
  • Vote set on bill on unborn victims this Week, LACY AND CONNER PETERSON ACT, DEMS CALL WEDGE ISSUE

The House this week will set up an election-year showdown over fetal-homicide legislation targeting Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry and a handful of Texas Democrats who have opposed such bills in the past. The bill, called the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, would legally recognize two victims when a pregnant woman and her unborn child are harmed or killed. Polls show the idea is favored by a majority of the public, and the issue is being pushed strongly by the California family of slaying victim Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner, as well as the Lyons of Kentucky, whose pregnant daughter, Ashley, and her unborn son, Landon, were killed in January. House Republican leaders expect to vote on the bill Thursday. Twenty-nine states — including California, where Scott Peterson is facing double-murder charges for the death of his wife, Laci, and their son — recognize the unborn as homicide victims in crimes, either throughout the pregnancy or after a certain stage. The Lyons case so mobilized the public there that state lawmakers quickly passed a fetal-homicide law this month. At the federal level, the House has approved such legislation twice, but the Senate has never voted on it. Senate Republican leaders want to bring up the bill soon, even though Democrats have successfully stalled its consideration in the past. President Bush supports the bill and Republican leaders say it's both good policy and good politics. "It has a residual effect in the campaign, but it is a policy we pursued two years before the presidential election," said Stuart Roy, spokesman for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Texas Republican. Opponents of the measure, including Democratic front-runner Mr. Kerry, have said it will undermine abortion rights by recognizing a fetus as a separate person with legal rights, while backers of the bill say there are clearly two victims when a pregnant woman is attacked. "There's overwhelming support for making an unborn baby who's been murdered as a separate murder than the mother," Mr. Roy said. "But the Democratic presidential candidates running in a primary have to take a position that puts themselves far out of the mainstream to a normal general election voter." There are a handful of Texas Democrats in the House being targeted by the vote on the legislation as well, including Reps. Martin Frost and Lloyd Doggett. They're among the Democrats who didn't vote for the bill last time, but face somewhat of a predicament this time, since Texas redistricting has made their districts more conservative. Congressional Democrats have pushed an alternative version of the bill that would increase penalties for crimes against pregnant women without recognizing the fetus as a second victim. Senate Democrats will offer this "one-victim" approach when the bill is considered there, and it's not clear which version will pass. A statement from Mr. Kerry's office this week indicated he would support such an alternative. But victims' families reject this approach. A May 2003 Newsweek poll found 84 percent think that when a pregnant woman and her fetus are killed, the attacker should face two murder charges instead of one. The legislation before the House this week would make it a separate crime to hurt or kill a fetus at any stage of pregnancy during the commission of about 68 federal crimes against the pregnant woman. The bill would explicitly exempt legal abortion, but in an e-mail response to a constituent in June, Mr. Kerry disagreed, saying it would "clearly impact" abortion rights. "I have serious concerns about this legislation because the law cannot simultaneously provide that a fetus is a human being and protect the right of the mother to choose to terminate her pregnancy. Therefore, I do not support the Unborn Victims of Violence Act," he said in his e-mail. Laci Peterson's mother, Sharon Rocha, wrote to Mr. Kerry in July to convince him otherwise. She argued that California's fetal-homicide law has been around since 1970 and hasn't affected abortion rights there at all. "What I find difficult to understand is why groups and senators who champion the pro-choice cause are blind to the fact that these two-victim crimes are the ultimate violation of choice," Mrs. Rocha said.

If indeed all those blue states all got together and seceded from the union, think what would be left for those red states, nothing. There would be no educational system. You would have nothing. What would be left to you? I mean, where is all of this talent in this country? It's on both sides, the Northeast corridor.

Technology makes start of life clear By Juanita Thouin Published: Wednesday, November 10, 2004 Since the 1973 passage of Roe v. Wade, one pivotal issue has fueled the continuing abortion debate - the origin of life. Some said, and still say, life begins at conception. Others claim it begins at birth. Through the 1970s and 80s, many of us accepted or at least acquiesced to a pro-choice philosophy - myself included. After all, the womb was a mysterious place where few ventured. Yes, some of us had seen the amazing 1965 photos Lennart Nilsson took, via an endoscope, of a...

Patrick Madrid, a Catholic apologist does an excellent job using scripture to explain why ALL Christians are called to vote in defense of life—and why it IS INDEED a sin to vote for pro-abortion politicians. I believe our Protestant brethren will agree with this presentation as well. The video file is 10 Megs and 10 minutes long. IMO—it is excellent and I recommend it be forwarded to as many as possible, especially fence sitters.

NEW ORLEANS - A new law allowing the state to issue license plates that honor veterans and service members runs afoul of a judge's order in a legal battle over anti-abortion-themed license plates, critics charge. Abortion-rights attorney William Rittenberg, who fought an earlier attempt to allow "Choose Life" license plates, said the law conflicts with a federal judge's ruling that the state must issue license plates in a "viewpoint neutral" manner. Louisiana lawmakers approved "Choose Life" plates in 1999. Revenue from the plates was earmarked for agencies that aid women giving birth in unplanned pregnancies or considering adoption. Abortion-rights advocates...

ASHVILLE, Sept. 25 - A federal judge ruled Friday that Tennessee's "Choose Life" license plate was unconstitutional but he declined to rule if the state's entire specialty plate program was flawed. Following the reasoning used in other states, the judge, Todd Campbell of United States District Court, wrote that the state could not promote just one viewpoint in the abortion debate. "The result in this case would be the same if the statute authorized a 'Pro-Choice' license plate instead of the 'Choose Life' license plate," Judge Campbell wrote. The American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood challenged the plate, arguing...

NASHVILLE - A federal judge ruled Friday that the state's "Choose Life" license plate is unconstitutional based on the reasoning in similar cases in other states, but he declined to rule on whether Tennessee's entire specialty plate program is flawed. "The result in this case would be the same if the statute authorized a 'Pro-Choice' license plate instead of the 'Choose Life' license plate," U.S. District Judge Todd Campbell wrote in his decision.
