CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Just when you thought you had gotten over last winter, be warned: The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts it will be super cold with a slew of snow for much of the country, even in places that don't usually see too much of it, like the Pacific Northwest. If you don't want to read about those four-letter words, there's plenty more to peruse in the folksy, annual book of household tips, trends, recipes and articles, such as animal jealousy, the history of shoes and anticipation for the biggest Supermoon in decades in November 2016.

I just thought this was worth noting. I live in Upstate New York, where in years past it would often be in the upper nineties at this point in the annual weather cycle. The leaves are beginning to turn on some of the trees in my neighborhood. We've had a succession of below-normal days. "Accuweather" (BTW) says it's 57° where I live. Two more very cold arctic blasts are going to hit Michigan this week. Conditions may be right late in the week for rapid ice making on the Great Lakes. This makes me think we could make a run at record ice cover on the Great Lakes by this coming weekend. As of Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, the total Great Lakes ice cover was 84.4 percent. Illinois has seen the fourth coldest year on record with an average statewide temperature of 49.9 degrees in 2014. Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel says 2014 is tied with 1912 and 1972 with an annual temperature that’s 2.9 degrees below average.
