CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Just when you thought you had gotten over last winter, be warned: The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts it will be super cold with a slew of snow for much of the country, even in places that don't usually see too much of it, like the Pacific Northwest. If you don't want to read about those four-letter words, there's plenty more to peruse in the folksy, annual book of household tips, trends, recipes and articles, such as animal jealousy, the history of shoes and anticipation for the biggest Supermoon in decades in November 2016.

I just thought this was worth noting. I live in Upstate New York, where in years past it would often be in the upper nineties at this point in the annual weather cycle. The leaves are beginning to turn on some of the trees in my neighborhood. We've had a succession of below-normal days. "Accuweather" (BTW) says it's 57° where I live. Last year, there was one evening on which Accuweather said it was eighteen degrees hotter where I live than what my outdoor thermometer said. I haven't heard President Obama saying much about global warming this summer, other than...

''We've had so much snow and the cold to preserve it,'' Vazzano said. ''We had storm after storm after storm.'' At times the snow was so plentiful it was problematic. The blizzard in late January triggered travel warnings and skiers in the Boston area were shoveling rather than skiing. It was followed closely by four successive weekends of winter storms. Vazzano said a cold spell in February helped preserve the snow but discouraged some skiers. ''When you can't get out of your driveway you can't get to the mountain,'

film maker Joel Gilbert, who produced the film “Dreams from My Real Father,” (which suggested that Obama’s Communist mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, may be his real father) talks to President Obama’s brother Malik, who has some very strong views about his half-brother – including his own doubts as to Obama’s parentage. Malik says, he feels “Disappointed, disappointed, used, used and also betrayed. In the beginning, I didn’t think that he was a schemer. His real character, his real personality, the real him, is coming out now.”

The assault on doctrine continues as Rome disintegrates. Vatican Radio: "It is not 'cold doctrine' that brings joy, but faith, and the hope of meeting Jesus. He who cannot rejoice is an unhappy believer: that’s what Pope Francis said in his homily at Thursday morning’s Mass in Santa Marta in the Vatican: Abraham’s joy upon hearing that as God promised, he may become a father inspired Pope Francis’ reflection Thursday. Commenting on the day’s readings, Pope Francis remarked that Abraham is old, as well as his wife Sara, but he believes and opens 'his heart to hope' and is 'full...

BUFFALO, N.Y. – An excruciatingly cold and unseasonably snowy February is coming to an end, and when western New York leaves it behind, it will be leaving behind the shattered remains of some century old or more records. February of 2015 wasn’t just cold, it was arctic cold. Zero days have been above freezing. That has led to an incredibly high amount of damage from water main breaks to accidents from slippery cold, and it’s also created a risk of future damage. Without reaching temperatures which would allow a temporary thaw, snow has piled up in some places to incredible...

Two more very cold arctic blasts are going to hit Michigan this week. Conditions may be right late in the week for rapid ice making on the Great Lakes. This makes me think we could make a run at record ice cover on the Great Lakes by this coming weekend. As of Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, the total Great Lakes ice cover was 84.4 percent. Record total ice cover on the Great Lakes is 94.7 percent, set in 1979.

From NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center: NASA snaps picture of Eastern US in a record-breaking ‘freezer’ NASA’s Terra satellite captured an image of the snow-covered eastern U.S. that looks like the states have been sitting in a freezer. In addition to the snow cover, Arctic and Siberian air masses have settled in over the Eastern U.S. triggering many record low temperatures in many states. On Feb. 19 at 16:40 UTC (11:40 a.m. EST), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured a picture of the snowy landscape. The snow cover combined with the frosty...
  • More Arctic Cold to Flow Across Eastern US Through End of February

Additional rounds of frigid air will continue to drill the eastern United States into the end of February, riding on the heels of bursts of record-breaking low temperatures. By way of Siberia, additional waves of cold air will continue to roll into the Eastern states. This cross-polar flow, as it is called, travels thousands of miles across the North Pole, over frozen tundra, seas of ice and/or snow cover. As a result, the frigid air experiences little moderation until it reaches the southern U.S. According to AccuWeather.com Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams, "In some cases the cold has been rivaling that...

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Cold weather records continue to fall across West Michigan and more brutal cold is on the way. Friday morning’s low of -13 degrees in Grand Rapids tied the existing record low set in 1966. Hundreds of schools closed due to the extremely cold temperatures with wind chills colder than -20 degrees. Thursday’s high of 7 degrees in Grand Rapids was a new record for the coldest high temperature for the date, and we’re already on pace for this to be one of the coldest February months ever. We’ll briefly warm to the upper 20s on...

Scientists say 'Enigma machine' has unlocked clues to the way the virus of the common cold assembles - making it possible to stop disease in its tracks A scientific breakthrough could herald an end to the common cold, after researchers found a way to “jam” the genetic code and stop the virus replicating. Experts said the discovery could allow scientists to design molecules which could “stop the virus in its tracks” - fending off colds and winter vomiting disease. Scientists from the Universities of Leeds and York used a computer-based model to identify a code in the viral genome, which...

The federal civilian workforce will reach its highest level since the end of the Cold War under the budget President Obama submitted to Congress on Monday, surging by more than 100,000 employees over the next two years as he tries to restock agencies he says have been decimated by GOP-led cuts. All told, Mr. Obama will have added more than 160,000 civilian workers to the executive branch since he took office, putting him on pace to top President George W. Bush for the biggest expansion in modern political history. When civilians at the Department of Defense are discounted, Mr. Obama

BOSTON (CBS) — You may have noticed that Tom Brady didn’t look himself at Tuesday’s Media Day. No, it wasn’t his bed head. And it wasn’t from a lack of sleep thanks to an early morning fire alarm at the team’s hotel. As he prepares for the biggest game of the season, the Patriots quarterback is battling a cold. And if you thought he looked rough on Tuesday, he looked a bit worse on Wednesday as he addressed the media at the team hotel in Chandler, Arizona. “It’s been lingering,” Brady told reporters as he held court for nearly 45...
