BOULDER, Colo. - If there was any doubt about the importance of battleground states just look at the president's agenda. Sunday was the eighth time President Obama has been to Colorado just this year. He is campaigning there in advance of the Democratic National Convention, starting Tuesday. In Boulder, the president argued that Governor Romney failed to explain where he would take the country when he had the national spotlight at the Republican National Convention. President Obama told the crowd his convention speech will look forward. Republicans say that's only because he's trying to avoid talking about his past four...
  • Catholic business owners who beat back ObamaCare denied award from Denver

The Catholic owners of a Colorado-based business won an injunction recently against implementing an ObamaCare mandate -- only to be denied a proclamation now from the Denver City Council. Hercules Industries, a heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning manufacturer which employs 300 workers and has been in business in the Mile-High City for 50 years, was to be honored with a “Good Citizenship Award." The laurel was in recognition of contributions to the community, including the historic restoration of company headquarters and, ironically, its “generous employee health care coverage.” But the award was taken away after the owners of Hercules Industries, the...

Here is an amusing story from Colorado; state officials are working hard to help relocate longtime employees who didn’t pass background checks but got hired anyways, evidently by public agencies with low standards. The state agencies that originally hired them recently folded and the Department of Public Safety was set to absorb them. Evidently, that agency is pickier and requires employees to have clean backgrounds and pass a polygraph test, which as the Denver newspaper reporting the story says, wasn’t the threshold at the other state agencies where the workers were first hired. So far, Colorado officials are “scrambling” to...

DENVER — A University of Colorado economic model that has correctly predicted the last eight presidential elections shows Mitt Romney emerging as the victor in 2012. Ken Bickers, professor of political science at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Michael Berry, political science professor at the University of Colorado Denver, announced Wednesday that their state-by-state analysis shows the Republican capturing a majority of electoral votes. "Based on our forecasting model, it becomes clear that the president is in electoral trouble," said Mr. Bickers, who also serves as director of the CU in DC Internship Program. The results show President Obama...

Three reasons why: Economy, economy, economy. Supposedly, the model’s been accurate to within 20 or so electoral votes in every election since 1980. Dude? Using a state-by-state analysis of unemployment and per-capita income, academics Kenneth Bickers and Michael Berry of the University of Colorado project that Romney will win 52.9% of the popular vote and 320 electoral votes. The political scientists discuss their findings here. Their forecast suggests that President Obama will lose in almost all of the swing states, including North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida… Bickers said much of the polling thus...

Those of us who spend our time defending gun rights are used to dealing with the emotionally charged and twisted logic of those on the other side of the issue. But every once in a while, someone takes a position so ridiculous, so asinine, that they deserve special attention. --IMAGE HERE-- Such a person is Professor Jerry Peterson of the University of Colorado. Professor Peterson, who is a scholar of some renown in nuclear physics circles, was elevated to the exalted position of Anti-Gun Wacko of The Week because of his reaction to the University of Colorado’s announcement that permit...

I need to know the name of the vet clinic that Missy is at so I can go see her and re-reimburse them for helping her, and if I am fortunate enough, to bring her home. I am at a complete loss of words. My gratitude for the people involved in this is without measure. Missy was hurt during an attempt at crossing the Sawtooth. It was Missy, a friend and...

LAKEWOOD, Colo--Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan took the stage before 2,600 supporters at Lakewood High School Tuesday to promote Mitt Romney's energy proposals, but he had another agenda. Interlaced throughout his speech were subtle, but clear, references to Ryan's common-man appeal. Over the course of his nearly 20-minute address, Ryan discussed working at McDonald's, shelling out more than $100 at the pump to fill up his gas tank, camping and fishing with his family, climbing the Colorado "14'ers"--a reference to the state's mountain peaks above 14,000 feet--and that he recently taught his boys "how to cook a meal on...

DENVER (Reuters) - President Barack Obama used a campaign stop in Colorado on Wednesday to call for an end to "senseless violence" across the country, appealing to Americans to focus on ways to stop it. Referring to the shootings at a movie theater in Colorado and at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in recent weeks, as well as last year's shooting of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and others in Arizona, Obama stopped short of calling for gun control but said concerted action was needed. "We've got to put an end to this kind of senseless violence, whether it's in Aurora,...

As President Obama launched a two-day swing through Colorado on Wednesday, his campaign got some unwelcome news. A new swing states poll by Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS News has Mr. Obama trailing Mitt Romney by five percentage points in Colorado. Yet this is the state that voted for Obama by nearly nine points in 2008 and that earlier polls have indicated favors him again this year. Is Obama losing his touch with Colorado voters? Not necessarily. Taken together with other polls from the past few days, the results are all over the place. One, from Public Policy Polling, has Obama...

Noted contraception activist Sandra Fluke will be introducing President Barack Obama at a campaign stop in Denver, Colo. Wednesday according to the Denver Post. Fluke is expected to introduce Obama in downtown Denver at the Auraria Campus, during a campaign stop centered on his economic plans, the outlet noted. Fluke’s appearance will likely add a second dynamic, with the campaign, in recent months, attempting to highlight differences between Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s stances on women’s issues to Obama’s left-leaning approach. Fluke endorsed Obama in June. The former Georgetown Law student, turned face of the contraception movement, came to...

As an interested observer of pop, social and political culture, I must confess to a fantasy I’ve had for quite a while. Don’t worry, you won’t be embarrassed. It’s nothing personal. I don’t watch TV anymore; so I don’t see TV news often. I do however; see Hannity and Greta on Wednesday nights, on the west coast, while working out in the gym. That’s about it. Instead, I listen to talk radio in the car and on my computer, so I am aware of current issues and I read many news sources and read blogs. I fantasize that when the...
  • Law Professor David Kopel Argues Colorado Gun Laws Have Saved Lives (VIDEO)

In a recent article written for the National Review, and then subsequently adapted for the Denver Post, David Kopel of the Independence Institute argues that post-Columbine gun reform in Colorado has saved lives. Given recent events, the shooting in Aurora, which left 12 dead and 58 wounded, it may be difficult for someone outside the gun community to accept Kopel’s argument. But a closer looks at the facts show that Kopel is, indeed, correct. The centerpiece of gun reform following the mass shooting at Columbine High School was the 2003 Concealed Carry Act. The law set up what is functionally...

Colorado judge's order on ObamaCare restores faith to the systemBy Quin Hillyer Published July 30, 2012 FoxNews.com Faith just won a round in court. As President Obama’s mandated insurance coverage of sterilization, contraception, and abortion-inducing drugs takes effect on August 1 for ordinary businesses, the Health and Human Services mandate’s ultimate survival suddenly appears blessedly jeopardized. Federal district Judge John J. Kane of Colorado on Friday issued a temporary injunction blocking the mandate from being applied to Hercules Industries, a family-owned manufacturer of air-conditioning products. **SNIP** Comparatively little attention, though, had been paid to the private businesses that also object...

Their faces still haunt us from our paper and cyber pages, even as the days turn into weeks since that awful night at the movies. Most of us probably do not know their names; we probably could not pick them out of a list. Even those of us who have written about them may only remember a name or two. And we only know who they were – no, who they are – from the stories told by relatives and friends. For some reason, and it may just be me, but for some reason I can tell almost by looking...

We may never know what was going though Aurora shooter James Holmes’s mind when he committed his heinous mass murder. We don’t know what kind of psychosis, or precisely what evil influences, he might have been subject to. What we do know is that, in wanting to be the Joker and not Batman, the villainous and not the virtuous, he reflects something prevalent today: The romanticizing of evil. And to whatever extent he was imitating art, this trend certainly is not art imitating life. I remember when Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega was taken into custody by U.S. forces. Here was...

The shooting suspect in the Colorado theater rampage was seeing a university psychiatrist specializing in schizophrenia in the weeks before the July 20 attack, according to court records released Friday. James Holmes was seeing Lynne Fenton, the director of student mental health services at the University of Colorado and a medical school professor. Holmes was a first-year graduate student in a neuroscience Ph.D. program. [Snip] Fenton, medical director of the counseling facility, has written numerous papers and launched research in the area of schizophrenia. She did not respond to calls to her home and office.
