Cables Portray Expanded Reach of Drug Agency By GINGER THOMPSON and SCOTT SHANE WASHINGTON — The Drug Enforcement Administration has been transformed into a global intelligence organization with a reach that extends far beyond narcotics, and an eavesdropping operation so expansive it has to fend off foreign politicians who want to use it against their political enemies, according to secret diplomatic cables. In far greater detail than previously seen, the cables, from the cache obtained by WikiLeaks and made available to some news organizations, offer glimpses of drug agents balancing diplomacy and law enforcement in places where it can be...

Whether it is merely the FBI trying to restore its shattered credibility or justice finally being done, the news that the pay-for-play activities of the Clinton Foundation are going to get renewed and serious attention is welcome. The Clintons have made a career of ignoring, breaking and skirting the law. Up to this point for the Clintons crime has paid off handsomely, but now they may find themselves caught between Little Rock and a hard place: The Justice Department has launched a new inquiry into whether the Clinton Foundation engaged in any pay-to-play politics or other illegal activities while Hillary...

Columbia Sportswear may be the next business to flee downtown Portland after a series of frightening encounters with the city's homeless population, including car break-ins, human waste dumped by the office's front door and threats to its employees. In an op-ed piece published earlier this month by The Oregonian, Columbia Sportswear President and CEO Tim Boyle said he is concerned he made a mistake when he opened a headquarters for the company’s Sorel footwear brand downtown, calling the situation "outrageous and unacceptable." "In fact, I am so concerned about the safety of our employees at the Sorel headquarters that we...

Fascist protesters from groups Black Lives Matter, Antifa, Southern Poverty Law Center of Columbia University and others shut down Tommy Robinson’s speech Tuesday night at Columbia University. Robinson’s speech on immigration, “The Fall of Europe – Mass Immigration” was slated for 8 p.m. It opened to a Q & A in an effort to quell the crowd of ticket-holding protesters and allow their arguments to be heard, but quickly folded as they began chanting, “Let them in! Let them in! Let them in!” in reference to the crowd of protesters without tickets beating on the doors to gain entrance. The...

Whenever a journalism school claims it has found a new and improved way to train reports, it seems, the result is an even more partisan and ideological training camp than what is already in place. Columbia University leads the way in this sort of pedagogy. “Independent journalism requires skepticism as a mandatory practice,” Giannina Segnini writes in the Columbia Journalism Review. “No matter how truthfully a presidential administration conducts itself, reporters should always question, contrast, and complement official information to find the closest version to the truth.” So far so good, but where has she been for the past eight...

Columbia University’s “Knight Institute” is suing the Trump administration on behalf of seven individuals alleging the president “blocked” them from reading his Twitter feed. The unidentified man removed a row of at least 50 flags, threw them in the trash, and went back for more. An angered Columbia University ROTC student recorded the event. “I ran over and asked him what he was doing, and was laughed at with no proper response,” the student recounted. “I asked a nearby Public Safety officer what could be done; but he was well within his rights to protest, so I recorded the video.”

Bogota (AFP) - Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos declared the country's 50-year conflict with FARC guerrillas "truly over" Tuesday, as the last truckloads of decommissioned weapons rolled away to be melted down. Santos himself shut a padlock on the last lot of decommissioned rifles before it was taken out of a remote demobilization camp to formally seal the UN-supervised disarmament by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). "With the laying down of arms ... the conflict is truly over and a new phase begins in the life of our nation," Santos said at a ceremony in Pondores, a remote...

WASHINGTON — The administration of President George W. Bush wants to expand the scope of U.S. military aid to Colombia in 2003 beyond counterdrug assistance to help the Colombian military safeguard the nation's infrastructure and stabilize its struggling democratic government, Army Maj. Of the $373 million in military aid for Colombia contained in Bush's $26 billion State Department budget request for 2003, $98 million would go to train and equip indigenous military units to protect the nation's Cano Limon-Covenas oil pipeline, "one of the most ...

Black students at Columbia University protested a campus statue of Thomas Jefferson last week by covering the statue, which stands in front of the journalism building, with a Ku Klux Klan hood and posing with signs disparaging Columbia University for celebrating the legacy of a man they regard as a white supremacist, hypocrite, rapist and a “symbol of violence against Black and brown bodies and their consciousness.” The group protesting, Mobilized African Diaspora (MAD), compiled a statement of complaints on its web site condemning the 103-year-old statue of a Founding Father and principal author of the Declaraton of Independence, Thomas...

Families and rescuers searched desperately on Sunday through mud-plastered rubble for victims of flooding and landslides in Colombia that have killed at least 210 people, injured hundreds and devastated entire neighborhoods. Several rivers burst their banks near the southwestern city of Mocoa in the early hours of Saturday, sending water, mud and debris crashing down streets and into houses as people slept. Officials in the nearby town of Villagarzon said they had no storage for recovered bodies and asked for government help.
