It is well documented that Wall Street was deeply offended by Obama's "fat cat" comments after he was elected President, so much so, that longtime Democratic supporters have shifted their support to the GOP for the next election. In fact, some Wall Streeters even alleged that at an even more basic level, Obama just doesn't like rich people. But apparently the disdain for Bam on the Street may be mostly appearances. According to Andrew Ross Sorkin at Dealbook, While many of the biggest name financiers feel that they can’t publicly support Mr. Obama through campaign contributions the way they did...

‘Brightstar’ is out there making a name for herself in South Africa during a weeklong trip with every family member in tow, including her brother’s children, but not her husband the president. Brightstar is the name dubbed to Michelle Obama’s plane. Brightstar may flicker brightly over the dark continent but in her own country nothing shines from her. Even though touted loudly as a “goodwill trip”, there must be some South Africans wondering why it took America’s First Lady almost three years to disperse her goodwill in their country on a weeklong trip that leaves lots of room for photo...

On June 23, 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers drastically increased the amount of water released from the Gavins Point Dam into the Missouri. On June 23, 2011, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency announced that flood waters along the Missouri River at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, south of Offutt Air Force Base, surpassed previous flood records set in 1993 when they reached 36.03 feet. Nebraska City, Nebraska also surpassed 1993 levels with a record 27.79 feet. Intimidating, perhaps, but not surprising to the Army Corps of Engineers who announced Tuesday, June 21, 2011, that they would increase the amount of water...

Jefferson County resident Jonathan Stewart said he laughed in shock after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) claimed the house his family lost in the deadly April 27 twister was ‘not unsafe to live in’. Displaced families in tornado-ravaged Alabama are outraged after being denied federal aide to rebuild their flattened homes – due to ‘insufficient damage’. The devastating reality is the house is now a concrete slab surrounded by rubble. Mr Stewart told AL.com a FEMA inspector saw first-hand the Pleasant Grove residence he shared with his wife, Lisa, and their two children was ripped from the ground....

Daughter of a friend lives in affected area. The mother went to help out a few weeks ago. She called me about what she saw and her experience with the Red Cross and FEMA. She asked Red Cross what they needed and got a list; she was referred to FEMA for additional information. What galled her was the response from FEMA. FEMA informed her that there WAS NO NEED FOR ANYTHING. Keep in mind that she had a list of items requested by the Red Cross representative IN HER HAND! I suggested that she get emails and contact information. The...

Americans Are Preparing At Unprecedented Levels Author: Mac Slavo April 27th, 2011 Do you have enough larder to feed your family and some friends if grocery stores ran out of food? How about several assault rifles and a few thousand rounds of ammo? Solar panels, a water filter, medical kits, bug-out bags, fire starters, tents, sleeping bags, some junk silver and reserve gasoline? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s becoming apparent to many Americans that depending on our local, state and federal governments in the event of an emergency, catastrophic societal collapse or widespread disaster will not be sufficient to...

Good morning all from Philadelphia. This is my first post on Free Republic. I'm a longtime lurker, and admirer though. I hope this isn't a vanity post, but I'd like some thoughts from the collective wisdom. I'm moving out to Oklahoma (Tulsa area, probably Broken Arrow) in the Fall. I realize I'll have a bunch of months to get ready for tornado season, but given the storms there so far this summer, I'm asking, what do you that live out there do for disaster preparedness? Living in Philly, I'm fortunate enough to have little natural disasters to worry about. My...

In the next week, how many times will you hear that the April 20 Deepwater Horizon oil spill was the worst environmental catastrophe in American history? This assessment was plausible when first uttered by President Obama almost a year ago, but now it’s clear that the worst never happened. The Deepwater spill has largely disappeared — dispersed, evaporated, and eaten by bacteria. Its impact on sea life appears minimal. Yet politicians, activists, trial lawyers, and environmental journalists persist in perpetuating this myth. Why? Pinning disasters on the environmental lobby’s hobby horse du jour defines the battlespace, increases the power of...

RALEIGH, N.C. – A devastating storm that spawned tornadoes, flash floods and hail as big as softballs has claimed at least 45 lives across the U.S. while roaring through the South and gaining steam in North Carolina and Virginia. Emergency crews searched for victims in hard-hit swaths of North Carolina, where 62 tornadoes were reported from the worst spring storm in two decades to hit the state. Eleven people were confirmed dead in Bertie County, county manager Zee Lamb said. Another four were confirmed dead in Bladen County, bringing the state's death toll to at least 21.

The continued stalemate in Libya is not good news for Samantha Power widely seen as one of the architects of the Libyan intervention. Power, who works with the National Security Council, has been touted as the next secretary of State if Obama is re-elected but if Libya continues to be a stalemate it will not help her case... But the original script went wrong from there with rebels advancing, then retreating like a bad Charlie Chaplin scene before the current stalemate. Stalemate is not good in that corner of the world, and a leaderless state, like Somalia can soon become...

The operator of the crisis-hit Fukushima nuclear plant has injected a hardening agent beneath a leaking concrete pit in a bid to stem the flow of highly radioactive water into the sea. The firm says the leakage seems to be decreasing, following the infusion of the hardening agent. ...Tokyo Electric Power Company started infusing liquid glass into gravel below the pit near the Number 2 reactor at 3 PM on Tuesday. TEPCO spotted a crack in the pit 3 days ago while trying to find the source of the leakage of contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean. ...TEPCO is planning...

It helped that Jackie Chan was on one end of the call. “When I picked up the phone and called my friends in the entertainment business in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Singapore, right away, they all agreed to come over,” Chan said. The next disaster will come in a form of threes , The first one shall affect the forest and the trees , The second the waters , their taste you shall find , Shall become as that of lime , The third a fire from heaven that can not be overcome , It shall destroy both buildings and nations in that all it touches shall be over run , No life in these places shall be found , For all that was shall be burnt to the ground , The foliage shall die as if from a disease , Every...

More than 27,000 people are officially dead or missing after the earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan on March 11th. According to the National Police Agency, 9,811 people are confirmed dead as of 9 PM on Thursday. The agency says it has received reports of 17,541 people missing. Shops across Tokyo began rationing goods -- milk, toilet paper, rice and water -- as a run on bottled water coupled with delivery disruptions left shelves bare Thursday nearly two weeks after a devastating earthquake and tsunami. The unusual sights of scarcity in one of the world's richest, most modern capitals came a day after city officials reported that radioactive iodine in the Tokyo's tap water measured more than twice the level considered safe for babies.
