About 800 inmates escaped a federal prison holding Muslim extremists in northern Nigeria during a sunset attack by gunmen who are believed to be members of a radical sect, a police official said Wednesday. The attackers went cell by cell at the prison in Bauchi, breaking open locks and setting fire to part of the prison before escaping during the confusion, said Bauchi state police commissioner Danlami Yar'Adua. Four people died and six others remain in critical condition.

Department of Homeland Security is planning to take several steps to assist local law enforcement agencies in identifying terrorists and uncovering terrorist plots. For example, DHS is working with the Justice Department, the Major City Chiefs Association, and other federal agencies and local law enforcement organizations to develop a curriculum that will train police officers to identify signs of extremism. The courses will be offered online as well as at DHS' Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and regional police training centers.
