Flights at both Chicago airports have been halted Friday morning, due to a fire at Federal Aviation Administration radar facility in Aurora. Emergency crews found a man with self-inflicted wounds while putting out the fire. A ground stop was in place at O’Hare International and Midway International airports as a result of the fire. Flights headed into both airports were being diverted to other airports, while flights departing the airports were being delayed. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said fire investigators were at the scene, as part of the DuPage County Fire Investigation task force. Aurora...

House lawmakers are seeking to stop Russian spy planes from partaking in exercises that may enable them to collect sensitive “intelligence that poses an unacceptable risk” to U.S. national security, according to a proposal in the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Lawmakers have proposed to fully freeze funds that currently allow the United States to sign off on these Russian flights under the Open Skies Treaty, an agreement that permits aerial surveillance flights over 34 countries. The House proposal would also reduce funding and limit the amount of information the United States provides to Russia about American missile defense...

At least six U.S. airlines canceled more than 40 flights into and out of Mexico City and Toluca airports Thursday after the Popocatépetl volcano spewed out ash, steam and glowing rocks, airport officials said. Mexico City airport spokesman Jorge Gomez said U.S. Airways, Delta, United, American and Alaska Airlines canceled 47 flights as a precaution. But he said the airport otherwise continues to operate normally and that by Thursday afternoon no ash had reached the area, about 40 miles (70 kilometers) from the volcano. …

For the first time in more than 30 years, you can now fly direct from Egypt to Iran. An Air Memphis flight took passengers from Cairo to Tehran on Saturday, the first commercial service to do so since the two countries severed relations in the wake of Iran's 1979 revolution. Eight Iranians were reported to be on board, including the Iranian chargé d'affaires and his family. The resumption of direct flights was agreed upon in February, during a visit to Iran by Egypt's tourism minister. The two governments have since signed an agreement to promote tourism between their countries, which...

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center -- the nation’s official source of warnings about space weather and its impact on Earth -- issued a watch for a geomagnetic storm expected to hit our planet Tuesday morning after a satellite witnessed an ultraviolet flash from the massive solar eruption, according to Spaceweather.com.

The eighth annual Mexican Interior Repatriation Program will feature one flight a day instead of two and is expected to cost the U.S. government about $10 million. Under the voluntary program, non-criminal Mexican illegal immigrants caught by the Border Patrol in Arizona are offered free flights to Mexico City. From there, they are given bus passes to return to their hometowns. The goal of the annual summer initiative is to prevent illegal immigrants from trying to cross the border again in the hopes of saving lives during the scorching summer months when hundreds die each year in Arizona.

The idea even has its own Facebook page, with 670 members and counting on the "Airlines should have kid-free flights" page. Kristen Wince said she might have been one of those members - before her son was born. "Yes, having been flying with no children, it seems like a good idea," she said. WASHINGTON, July 6, 2010 – The Transportation Security Administration is reminding military members that explosives are not allowed on commercial flights. TSA spokesman Lauren Gaches said agency workers occasionally encounter servicemembers who have packed inert grenades or other prohibited items in their luggage, often as a keepsake from the battlefield. “The problem is, when you’re looking at that through an X-ray machine, you can’t tell the difference” as to whether it could explode, she said. Servicemembers traveling with prohibited items is not a common problem, but it can be disruptive, Gaches said. “From time to time, we see folks traveling...

There were 235 passengers and 13 crew aboard Delta Air Lines Flight 273, which landed safely just after at 3:30 p.m. at Bangor International Airport, Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliott said. Federal officials met...
