PANAMA CITY — A new father is dead after what appeared to be an accidental shooting Tuesday night. Steven Justin Ayers, 33, and his wife had gathered family members to celebrate the homecoming of their 3-day-old baby — born on Father’s Day. But the celebration at 2502 Michigan Court ended shortly after 6 p.m. when a stray bullet entered the home, struck Ayers in the back of the head and killed him instantly. Moments earlier, Charles Edward Shisler, 62, had picked up a loaded 9mm pistol in his residence, adjacent to the Ayers’ home, and the gun discharged. Shisler was...

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. - Middle school students moved their lesson from the classroom to the shooting range. It wasn’t your typical field trip. A group of students in Pueblo County was firing live ammo and learning about gun safety. "I'm very excited, today we're going to come out here on the gun range and shoot a little bit. The past week we've learned about the revolutionary war," said Jonah Statezny, a Craver middle school student. "My favorite part is shooting guns. When I was little we used to go to the shooting range," said another student, Danielle Cooper. ... Appleseed...

You might well think that the catastrophic destruction of firearms caused by shooters leaving their cleaning rods inside their guns was a rare occurrence, but you would be wrong. It happens far to often. These photos show what happens when a cleaning rod is left in a .338 Lapua Magnum rifle. A member of the SnipersHide forum reported that this KABOOM happened two benches down from him at the range. The shooter only sustained minor injuries. Two holes were punched in roof and pieces of the rifle were scattered around the range.

Irresponsible Gun Owners of the Day: Austin Police Department Officers Shelly Holmstrom and Vincent Giles By Robert Farago on January 2, 2014 I love me some tactical shotguns. They’re as close to a one-stop shot as you can get in a firearm. They’re perfect for making solid objects disappear in an explosion of bits. Don’t try that at home. Or in a police patrol car. OK, Austin, Texas police officers Shelly Holmstrom and Vincent Giles didn’t try to blow the bejesus out of their squad cars with their department-issued scatterguns, but by God they managed it. The video above features...

Machias, Wash - After receiving all of the case files, and photos from the Snohomish County Sheriff's office this afternoon, this column has now reviewed these case files and photos and has found glaring issues with the homeowners claim that the bullet came from the Seattle Rifle & Pistol Association. For starters, as stated in the last update to this story, there is the fact that the range facility was indeed, closed the day the home was hit. The homeowner, Kendall Klatt, stated that she found the hole in her house on the afternoon of August 8th, 2013. On that...

On Friday, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed a bill into law that encourages schools to teach an NRA-sponsored gun accident prevention course called the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program to first graders. Eddie the Eagle, the NRA version of Smokey the Bear, teaches children four steps when they encounter a firearm: “If you see a gun, STOP! Don’t Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an adult.” According to Senate Bill 75, the purpose of the course is to promote safety and emphasize how students should respond if they encounter a gun. While teaching the program, school personnel and instructors are prohibited from...

After watching a television report about a four-year-old who accidentally shot and killed his father with a loaded gun that had been left unattended at a friend’s house, the “Battlestar Galactica” star tweeted Monday: “Please practice gun safety. This is horrible!” Soon after, Sackoff’s Twitter feed blew up with followers advocating gun control instead of gun safety. “Here's a radical idea folks. How about NO gun?” one wrote. Sackoff responded to her critics: “Never gonna happen in the...

The gun was small and light, the training wheels of firearms. The .22-caliber, single-shot Crickett rifle turned deadly on Tuesday, officials in Kentucky said, when a 5-year-old Cumberland County boy shot and killed his 2-year-old sister in what the coroner described to a local paper as “just one of those crazy accidents.” The toddler was shot when the boy was playing with the rifle, as Kentucky state police said in a statement. The gun, a type of rifle made specifically for kids, had been given to the boy as a gift last year and kept in a corner, and the...

Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that he views the administration’s efforts to reduce firearms violence as gun safety – not gun control. The vice president fielded questions online in a Google+ Hangout, saying the proposals that he and President Barack Obama have laid out won’t end gun crime, but they still could make a difference.

A Spotsylvania County man with a valid concealed-weapon permit died after a semi-automatic pistol without an external safety discharged as he tried to adjust the weapon, which was tucked into his waistband, investigators have concluded. The 45-year-old man was sitting in the front seat of his family's minivan in a shopping center parking lot on Sunday when his .40-caliber Glock discharged, authorities said. "For some reason, maybe for comfort, he reached out and went to adjust it," said Spotsylvania sheriff's Capt. Liz Scott. "The detective thinks that in doing so — in just grabbing it — he inadvertently grabbed the...

Many of us grew up with firearms in the house. There was my grandfather's old 12 gauge double barrel in a closet and there were a couple of boxes of shells on the shelf above it. As young kids, we knew not to touch it without permission and not without an adult present. Kids should all learn gun safety. A good place to begin is with parental instruction and the NRA can even help with their Eddie Eagle video that is available nowdays. But, apparently these two well meaning kids have no idea what gun safety is or that it...

Guns are dangerous tools. They can save lives and they can destroy them. When you take on the responsibility to handle a firearm, you must take it seriously and you must educate yourself, on all that it takes to be a safe and responsible gun owner. You may be surprised to learn that there are only four basic golden rules to gun safety. If you follow these rules—at all times—you will be safe and so will the people around you. Please realize that any gun owner who's foolish enough to disobey these golden rules, by negligence or stupidity, makes us...
