Mary Harwell Sayler Other Articles by Mary Harwell SaylerPrinter Friendly Version Should We Take the Bible Literally or Figuratively? April 17, 2007 Question: I started going to a Bible study in our parish and usually enjoy it but am thinking about dropping out. Several people in our group said we should never take the Bible literally, but what's the point of reading the Bible if it doesn't mean what it says?Discussion: The Bible does mean what it says. However, God's ways can be so mysterious that people do not always understand what's said or why, especially on first...

As the Republican base fragments and Christian conservatives consider a “fast” from politics, the polling data point to a mid-term Republican thumping. Less than two weeks from now, Republicans will begin their post-mortem soul searching. And as the corpses of their House and Senate majorities grow cold, so should Karl Rove’s 2006 campaign strategy.

Katrina said she was on a hijacked flight in 1978. I have found only two hijackings in 1978 A Phillipies Air Lines flight but can not place her on the flight. The second plane in Cyprus and it is unclear if it was a commercial flight. I think she is lying for affect. Just as the Governor Richards of New Mexico did when he said he was drafted in the first round by the Kansas City Royals of the American League and Kerry did in saying he threw his medals over the White House fence in protest of the Vietnam...

This is the finest film in 13 years as a film critic that I can't wholeheartedly recommend simply because it's too real for sensitive viewers to endure. Those taking that risk will be rewarded with the most powerful film so far in 2006; those who can't will be understood. Is it too soon for a movie about Sept. 11, 2001? Is it an offensive idea to dramatize the flight of United 93, one of four airlines hijacked that day by al-Qaida terrorists, and the only one that didn't reach its target after the passengers fought back? Whether filmmaker Paul Greengrass explores...

In some form or fashion, I have known the players in what I am about to describe as a series of regrettable moments at the funeral of Coretta Scott King. The one I know least, President George W. Bush, won both my sympathy and respect for gallantly enduring the slings and arrows pointed directly at him during what should have been a celebration of a great woman, but instead turned into a political rally

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) has a press release on their web site opposing the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. The Union claims to be the representative of 1.5 Million Reform Jews in the U.S. They may well be, but I wonder if they polled their membership on this issue? Yesterday Senator Diane Feinstein, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, stated it would be improper to make judgment on Judge Alito before the hearings begin. Yet, that is exactly what the URJ has done. You might ask why would this organization be taking such...

What has $4.5 billion and provides millions of dollars per year to the left in California and won’t stop until California has universal, government-run, and fully unionized healthcare? The answer, three foundations created by Blue Cross’ conversion from non-profit to for-profit status from the late-80s to the mid-90s: The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation and the California HealthCare Foundation. These three entities, hijacked by the liberal activists on their boards, fund political activity, liberal consumer rights groups such as the Consumers Union (the publisher of Consumer Reports), and the ACLU, the CTA teachers union, Planned Parenthood, the National Center...

"I had no aviation experience when I was appointed to head the Massachusetts Port Authority in September 1999. What I had were political connections, the right gender, and a governor's faith in my abilities. The learning curve was steep, but the allure of aviation quickly captured my imagination - until the events of September 11, 2001. This story is a recounting from Logan Airport, Boston's own ground zero, of the first hours and days following the new century's most searing moment. It is a sharing of my soul and a look into the soul of a city that felt sorrow...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - A key supporter of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's redistricting measure announced plans Tuesday to form an independent, nonpartisan campaign supporting Proposition 77 - largely over fears the measure will fail if tied directly to Schwarzenegger's other Republican-backed ballot initiatives. Bill Mundell, a Southern California businessman who donated more than $300,000 to help qualify the redistricting measure for the ballot, said his new group would operate separately from the governor's California Recovery Team in support of the initiative. The move comes on the same day the California Recovery Team announced that Steve Poizner, a Silicon Valley billionaire and Republican...

BERLIN - A controversial new bill signed into law Wednesday will allow the German air force to shoot down hijacked planes on federal government orders. German president Horst Koehler signed the legislation but said he had serious reservations. He called for Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court to examine the new law. Koehler pointed out that the German constitution already permitted the armed forces to defend air space over the country. However, until now the orders for this had to come from one the 16 federal states - not the federal government, he added. Opposition leaders from the Christian Democratic alliance (CDU/CSU)...
