British scientists on Tuesday reported they had harnessed the power of urine and were able to charge a mobile phone with enough electricity to send texts and surf the internet. Researchers from the University of Bristol and Bristol Robotics Laboratory in south west England said they had created a fuel cell that uses bacteria to break down urine to generate electricity, in a study published in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. "No one has harnessed power from urine to do this so it's an exciting discovery," said engineer Ioannis Ieropoulos. "The beauty of this fuel...

Apple said Monday it would investigate claims that a Chinese woman was killed by an electric shock she received when answering a call while the device was charging. The claim quickly drew attention after a woman in the western region of Xinjiang wrote about the death of her 23-year-old sister Ma Ailun on China's popular microblog service Sina Weibo. "We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter," said Apple's Beijing-based spokeswoman Carolyn Wu, offering condolences to the family.

Not only is Big Brother President Obama watching you, he’s going to start messaging you if you own an iPhone with AT&T service. AT&T subscribers with an iPhone 4S or 5 using iOS 6.1 or higher are going to start getting presidential alerts on matters of “national importance” whether you want them or not. As part of AT&T’s new Wireless Emergency Alerts, once a user updates their operating system, AMBER and Emergency alerts are automatically sent to the phone. However . . .

When thieves steal an iPhone, it's referred to as "Apple picking." Apple's latest idea to deter such thefts is a feature called "activation lock." The company says it’ll be arming new iPhones -- and all its mobile devices -- with a kind of kill switch that can render a lost or stolen phone inoperable. The announcement comes shortly before San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon, along with New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, is scheduled to meet with officials from several cellphone companies about how to prevent the growing number of smartphone thefts. Apple's senior vice president of software...

EDMONTON – When it comes to cell phones, there always seems to be a better model hitting the market. But before you ditch your old phone, make sure it’s completely wiped clean of all your personal information. That may seem obvious enough, but as Adam McKale saw firsthand, it doesn’t always happen. After switching his broken iPhone for a refurbished one at the Apple store in Southgate mall, he couldn’t believe what popped up when he plugged the device into his computer. “It was the guy’s name, all of his contacts, a bunch of his music – which isn’t so...

It's too soon to tell, but Samsung might have finally beaten Apple to become the United State's top smartphone maker, at least for now. A new report by the investment research firm Canaccord Genuity shows that Samsung beat Apple in US sales in May. In particular, Canaccord found the Galaxy S 4, Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III sold more units combined than Apple's iPhone. It's important to be aware of the methodology Canaccord used to develop their findings. The study surveyed only the retail stores of carriers AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. Apple Stores were not surveyed....

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A young actress was allegedly assaulted and mugged for her cellphone last week in Los Angeles’ Fairfax District. JT Vancollie said she was walking home from babysitting Friday night when a teenage girl approached her at Sierra Bonita Avenue and 8th Street. “She said, ‘Hey, I’m trying to get my friend to help me get home. Could I use your cellphone?’” said Vancollie. The victim said the suspect started dialing repeatedly. “She starts to run away. I run after her like, ‘Are you kidding… I was trying to help you…like, what are you doing?’” Vancollie told...

NEWTON, Mass. — A local family says a language barrier may have resulted in police using a Taser on a woman after she tried to buy too many iPhones at a local mall. Police, however, say the incident isn't that clear cut. Xiaojie Li, of Newton, said she is embarrassed by Monday's Pheasant Lane Mall in New Hampshire incident. "So my mom says she don't know why they called the police, because she doesn't understand what they are talking about," her 12-year-old daughter Jiao Jay said. Jay said her mother bought two iPhones last Friday, and was told that was...

A nanogenerator made from inexpensive materials harvests mechanical energy and produces enough power to charge personal electronics. The phenomenon that causes a painful shock when you touch metal after dragging your shoes on the carpet could someday be harnessed to charge personal electronics. Researchers at Georgia Tech have created a device that takes advantage of static electricity to convert movement—like a phone bouncing around in your pocket—into enough power to charge a cell phone battery. It is the first demonstration that these kinds of materials have enough oomph to power personal electronics. Excess energy produced when you walk, fidget, or...

Dan Crow, another former Apple employee from the 1990s, also says Apple has shown itself to be doomed without Steve Jobs, in a piece for The Guardian headlined “We’ve Passed Peak Apple”: Why do I think Apple has passed its peak? There are a number of signs. The most visible recent one is the Maps debacle. Replacing Google Maps with an obviously inferior experience shows how much Apple has changed. Apple’s success had been all about offering users the best possible experience; suddenly it is willing to give users a clearly worse experience to further its corporate interests - in...

The app is available for the iPhone and comes with a library of pre-recorded words allowing users to create unique “Shatisms” that play using Shatner’s voice. Think religion, think ritual: history, perhaps sacred writings, proscribed sets of moral laws, and potentially a sacrifice or two. There are plenty of organizations and cultures around the world that claim they adhere to a certain set of beliefs, but could adoration and a cult following for a technology firm be the next step? The University of British Columbia's Dr. Kirsten Bell believes that much of the aforementioned applies to Apple. After observing launch videos, and recently attending the iPad mini launch for TechNewsDaily, the social anthropologist said that Mac fandom has some strikingly similar parallels between a religion or...

Any fellow FReepers having difficulties with the new iphone 5, or specifically, the ios6? I love the phone but here's my nightmare: Received phone last Wednesday. Activated it. Camera was inop, but everything else worked fine, including wifi access. Brought phone to Apple this Saturday, received a new replacement. Activated it at home. Everything works great EXCEPT I cannot connect to my wifi. Did an internet search and there are quite a few people with the same issue. Anyone else run into this?

Some number of iPhone and iPad users upgrading to iOS 6 are reporting a range of Wi-Fi problems, as are some iPhone 5 users. The solutions, when there are any, seems as baffling as the problems. The continuing posts at Apple's tech support site and at online forums show users with existing iPhone and iPads frustrated by a flurry of different problems, including a "grayed out" Wi-Fi option, dropped connections, slow connection speeds, and having to connect manually to a Wi-Fi access point. Separately, there are posts by some owners of the new iPhone 5, released last Friday, also about...

View the Video With the grace of an accented vacuum cleaner salesman, Apple's promotional video star delivered a point by point sales pitch on the new IPhone 5. But why did they use a person whose appearance contrasted so heavily with a new product? Isn't he paid well enough to dress well enough? The video is of high professional quality. Beautiful, rotating video images of the new product were interspaced with cuts of a human who hadn't shaved in four days, but sported a newly buffed cranium. His dress was a simple, gray t-shirt. It appeared to have been recently...
