While individuals have been playing musical instruments that require vibrating lips to produce sound since before the dawn of recorded time – we need only think of the shofar, didgeridoo, and conch shell to begin a list of lip-blown aerophones of ancient origin – there is much about playing such instruments that remains a mystery. Whether thousands of years old or made last week at a modern brass instrument factory, the fundamental changes to brasses over the millennia have been those of material, construction and ergonomics rather than actual tone production. As every school child that has ever picked up...

This summer has been typically British and it feels like there has been more rain than sun, but as we inch closer to September, British people are wondering whether to stay-cay or vay-cay this August. A recent poll from community-run network giffgaff has revealed the nations favourite summer songs and compiled a playlist of songs to suit our mood for summer 2017. The research has revealed that The Clash’s Should I Stay or Should I Go is the UK’s go-to anthem. It features recent music hits who have hit the top of the charts as well as classics.

No, the melodies of our beloved hymns weren’t borrowed from drinking songs, bar tunes, and tavern music. I’ve had about ten comments on my blog posts this week alone trying to use the bar song myth as their smoking gun in the case for commercial worship. It’s an argument many love to make, but it didn’t happen. Those most often implicated in this myth are Martin Luther and the Wesleys. Luther did use German Bar form, a musical style in an AAB pattern having nothing to do with the suds. There is no indication John John and Charlie ever suggested...

by: Special to the AFRO ssherman@afro.com / (Photos of Panelists by Shantella Y. Sherman and Courtesy Photo) / August 17, 2017 0 225 The love and respect Washingtonians continue to have for legendary Go-Go artist and founder Chuck Brown shows most in the indelible footprint of his music and mentorship on both the music industry and the city. In celebration of the 3rd Annual Chuck Brown Day, which is scheduled for Aug. 19, the D.C. Public Library hosted a series of workshops and screenings, including the panel discussion, “Go-Go, As D.C. History,” where lovers of his sound gathered to remember...

Conservative talk radio host Dennis Prager received a standing ovation from a near-capacity crowd the moment he walked on the stage Wednesday evening to conduct the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The audience was not only applauding the music, but the principle of freedom of expression, after several left-wing members of the orchestra had attempted to organize a boycott of the event by the musicians and by the public. A letter circulated by the boycotters exhorted: “Please urge your friends to not attend this concert, which helps normalize bigotry in our community.” One boycotter, violinist and...

"Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train, Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again. In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive. By May the tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember, oh so well, [Chorus] The night they drove old Dixie down, and the bells were ringing, The night they drove old Dixie down, and the people were singin'. they went La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la,"

The Beatles were always breaking new ground, and on August 15, 1965, they did so again by essentially creating the stadium tour, as detailed in Ron Howard’s new doc on the band’s years on the road, “Eight Days a Week.” On that date, the group played before a record crowd of 55,600 at the then-brand new William A Shea Municipal Stadium in Queens, NY. The event was filmed for posterity by their manager, Brian Epstein, and Ed Sullivan’s Sullivan Productions for a television special, a 30 minute edit of which, representing most of the concert, can be seen exclusively in...

Lionel Richie said on Tuesday’s “Today” show that he is unsure he will attend Donald Trump’s reception for the Kennedy Center Honors.... ...Hoda Kotb asked Richie about his own plans during a live interview on “Today.” He responded, “I’m going to just play it by ear. I must tell you, I’m not really happy as to what’s going on right now with the controversies. They’re weekly, daily, hourly. But I think I’m just gonna wait it out for a minute, see where it’s going to be by that time.” “This is going to be in December,” Richie stressed. “We may...

Can Journey survive Donald Trump? That’s the question some fans are asking. And things definitely look iffy for the multiplatinum-selling Bay Area band right now, in the wake of guitarist and co-founder Neal Schon taking to Twitter to blast certain bandmates for a recent trip to the White House. Schon was referencing a visit to Washington D.C. in late July, when three members — singer Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and bassist Ross Valory, says Billboard — posed for pictures with the President and staffers as well as reportedly met press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. To many – including NBC...

An unspoken mystery lingered beneath the parting clouds as Eagles took the stage on Saturday evening at Citi Field in Queens: How would the legendary band address the absence of its co-founder and co-leader Glenn Frey, who yielded to multiple illnesses in January 2016 at age 67? After the band opened with a crisp and lovely rendition of “Seven Bridges Road,” Joe Walsh answered that question as beautifully as possible: “Please give a warm Eagles-family welcome to Deacon Frey.” As his name in bright, red letters suddenly zoomed onto a giant screen above the stage, the spotlight hit Frey’s...
