Yesterday, a man was arrested and charged with hate crimes for "anti-white" attacks in Central Park last week. Suspect Edward Fall, 20, was charged in two incidents in which he and a group of people allegedly shot pellet guns at white joggers in the park. Fall gave up two of his fellow attackers to police, and blamed them for shooting people—and he also claims that they took bets on hitting targets. Fall told police that his buddies 21-year-old Antwan Ross and another friend he called "Hollywood," were responsible for shooting people in Central Park on August 17th and August 18th....

The mind of an animal is a far richer, more complex thing than most people know — as a new TIME book reveals.Let’s be honest, you’d probably rather die than wake up tomorrow morning and find out you’d turned into an animal. Dying, after all, is inevitable, and there’s even a certain dignity to it: Shakespeare did it, Einstein did it, Galileo and Washington and Twain all did it. And you, someone who was born a human and will live your life as a human, will end your life that way too. But living that life as an animal —...

MILLS, Wyo. A Wyoming police officer has pleaded not guilty to an animal-cruelty charge that alleges a police dog died after he left it in a hot patrol car for several hours. According to an investigator's statement filed in Natrona County Circuit Court, Mills police officer Zachary Miller left the dog, a 10-year-old female black lab named Nyx, in his patrol car for over six hours July 9. "It's a tragedy," Mills Mayor Marrolyce Wilson said. The car was running, but the air conditioning was off and outside temperatures reached 86 degrees, KCWY News 13 reported (http://bit.ly/1tAzzhs). Miller, a four-year...

I had my Australian Shepard put down today. Her name was Sidney, as in the city in Australia. She was 15 Years 3 months. She had had dementia for the last year or so. For the last year she hadn't been able to control her bowels. She could hold the pee, but number 2 just came when it was ready. Today when I got home, she couldn't stand up. Her back legs just wouldn't work. I took her outside and laid her in the nicest part of the grass. She looked peaceful as the wind blew her face. On the...

I am surprised more dogs are not shot during home invasions.   Maybe home invaders tend to invade homes without dogs.   The reporting is tantalizingly vauge in this article from ksd.com: NewsChannel 5 has learned the intruder forced his way inside four-unit building and made his way up some stairs. The resident of the home fired five to seven shots. The suspect ran from the scene. The victim says he thinks he might recognize the suspect's voice but isn't certain. (snip)  The victim was not injured. Authorities say a dog was shot and injured by the crossfire and ran away...

In Michigan, two Cane Corsos, a large breed descended from Roman war dogs, attacked a jogger.  A neighbor saw that the jogger was down with the dogs attacking him.   He  defended the attacked man with a .44 magnum, firing two shots, one in the air, the other at one of the dogs, grazing it.   That stopped the attack.   Later one of the dogs tried to return to the attack, but left when it saw the man with the gun.  From  freep.com: A man mowing his lawn waved at Sytsma, a 46-year-old Livonia man, who politely waved back....

I’ve never met a stray dog that I didn’t want to take home. As a little girl, I felt the same way about kittens, which I dressed in my doll clothes. Kittens who escaped my doll prams dressed in bonnets and booties must have caused curiosity on long ago Halifax streets.

Feeling that inestimable sadness of the heart with all that is going on in our world, I went back out onto my deck just before sunrise yesterday morning to be there for God’s daily morning orchestra, the real Twitter: the spine tingling birdsong that announces the beginning of each and every day. In unison, the birds, like the angels of another realm so many long to someday see, join together in song to praise another dawn.

Mr Williams is in his 70s.  He heard screams for help outside his house and saw a man on the ground being viciously attacked by three Pit Bulls.   He grabbed two baseball bats from his garage, and started hitting the animals with the bats.  It wasn't enough.   He retrieved a pistol, and started back toward the scene.   The animals started advancing on him.  He shot and killed one dog...

One is not racing clean. A champion racehorse owned by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has tested positive for morphine, a banned substance on race days in the United Kingdom. The British Horseracing Authority announced last week that tests on five horses under the care of various trainers showed the presence of morphine in their 'A' samples. Late Tuesday, Buckingham Palace said that one of the horses was the monarch's 5-year-old mare Estimate The Daily Telegraph reports that the horse will likely forfeit its second-place finish in the Gold Cup at Ascot this past June, as well as the prize money...

Many people claim that handguns are useless for protection against bears.   Numerous examples have shown that this is a false notion.   Handguns may not be ideal as defensive weapons for bears, but they can be effective.  In a defensive situation, you have to use what is available.   In this case, a homeowner in Alaska used a .45 against a brown bear that was trying to get into his house on July 7th of this year.  He and his son were in the home.   He had scared off the animal with some warning shots just three hours before. ...
