All cats may have nine lives, but Christopher, an orange and white tabby who lives at a Redwood City veterinary clinic, also has a sixth sense. Dubbing him a "guardian angel," "wonder cat" and "miracle kitty," the staff and volunteers at the Nine Lives Foundation's Feline Well-Care Clinic say Christopher can tell when other cats need help. He will sit outside the cages of sick felines until someone lets him in, and last month, the clinic says, he saved the life of a kitten in need of a blood transfusion. "It's weird, it's really true that he seems to understand...

Buffalo police rescued a cat from a Cheektowaga man who apparently was planning to make a meal out of his pet because he thought it was ill-tempered, authorities said Monday. When Ferry-Fillmore District officers pulled over a car driven by Gary L. Korkuc on Sunday night during a traffic stop, they said they heard a cat crying from inside the trunk and investigated. What they found has left animal lovers at the SPCA Serving Erie County in shock. The cat, according to police, was in a cage “marinating” in a mixture of crushed red peppers, chili pepper, salt and oil....

"Lola "... Loyal, conservative Canine Freeper and dedicated K-9 companion of Recovering Ex-Hippie, passed away August 3." I am heartbroken that my wonderful doggie, Lola, died Tuesday morning. She was 15 years old and had been adopted from the Doggie Orphanage in Cleveland. She then moved with me to Jacksonville, FL. Always a Patriotic Pupster, Lola was called upon by the CIA after 9-11 to break up “Terrorist Squirrel Cells “ in our woods….a calling she dedicated herself to with great enthusiasm. She was the mascot for a fund drive to raise money for the New Orleans Humane society during...

Pet stores in at least 35 U.S. cities have taken an animal protection group's pledge not to sell puppies and to educate potential buyers about adoption. Hundreds of pet shop owners around the nation have already removed puppies from their store windows and some cities and towns are considering tough laws banning the sale of puppies, kittens and other small animals. The "puppy-friendly pet store" pledge is being promoted by the Humane Society of the United States, the country's largest animal advocacy organization. "These stores have set a positive example of corporate responsibility for other businesses to follow," said Stephanie...

Every morning before school, Barney the rabbit could expect a little treat and a bit of loving attention. But when his owner, 13-year-old Kiera Bailey, came downstairs to make her daily check on him, the schoolgirl received a dreadful surprise. Instead of her beloved pet - bought nine years ago after a bad experience at school - there was an empty hutch and a threatening note, apparently from animal rights extremists.

Sell a guinea pig, go to jail. That's the law under consideration by San Francisco's Commission of Animal Control and Welfare. If the commission approves the ordinance at its meeting tonight, San Francisco could soon have what is believed to be the country's first ban on the sale of all pets except fish. That includes dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, lizards and nearly every other critter, or, as the commission calls them, companion animals. "People buy small animals all the time as an impulse buy, don't know what they're getting into, and the animals end...

Congress has suddenly realized something. Animals could be dangerous! Gosh. One wonders what magick faierie dust was sprinkled on these stalwart protectors of the public weal that made them realize that animals are dangerous? Whatever fantastic episode befell Congress they have acted and hence these high mukety-mucks last year introduced an ominous sounding bill called the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act (H.R. 669). According to the summary this bill is supposed to, "prevent the introduction and establishment of nonnative wildlife species that negatively impact the economy, environment, or other animal species' or human health, and for other purposes." I don't do much blogging these days so I really haven't written much in the past few months, but tonight I have a tale to tell, a couple of shots of Sour Mash in me, and the spellchecker here seems to be functioning, so here goes... For the past month, we have had a nearly full-grown Capped Guinea Fowl marauding loose through our neighborhood. This started when I surprised her in one of the neighbor's yards one quiet Sunday morning when I was out walking the dog, and startled her out of a shrub. I told my wife about it...

The dog ate my homework and that was just for starters. Shocking X-rays reveal the strange things that wind up in the stomachs of our pets, reports CBS-2's Dave Carlin. CBS 2 got the inside story. At the Dewitt Clinton Dog Run on Manhattan's West Side we met dog owners with "tails" to tell. Carol Sumner's beagle "Snoopy," "ate half of a rubber ball once," she said.
