Roman statue remains found in submerged city

Archaeologists in Greece have found Roman remains in a submerged ancient port on the Cycladic island of Kythnos, the Greek culture ministry said today.

The archaeologists found the bearded head of a man and the torso of a warrior wearing a Roman-era breastplate at a depth of 2.5 metres underwater in the island bay of Mandraki last month.

It is unclear whether the fragments were part of the same statue.

They had apparently been used as building materials in a wall running along the harbour, the ministry said.

The age of the fragments has not been certified.

The Romans became dominant on the Greek mainland from the second century BCE onwards after defeating the waning Macedonian kingdom and a number of Greek city-states in battle.

Greece was subsequently incorporated into the Roman Empire for the next 500 years.

Greece was subsequently incorporated into the Roman Empire for the next 500 years.

Confusing chronology here. Macedonia and the Greek cities were absorbed into the Empire around 150BC, and Greece was still in the later (Byzantine) empire after 1200 years AD.

I wonder when the statue was recycled for that wall, and when the town submerged.

As I understand it BCE and CE were first used by Jewish historians, who, for obvious reasons, did not want to use dates 'Before Christ' or 'In the Year of Our Lord' (Anno Domini).

Lots of cities and towns around the eastern Mediterranean, including most of Alexandtia and almost all of Caesarea, have gone below the waves. Earthquake territory you know.

Somewhere I had (probably still do, on an offline hard drive) a cool little file about an eastern Aegean island which has an ancient, mostly sunken city, sank as a consequence of quake. First read about it in a Berlitz travel book I think, it’s probably under a pile of something around here...

Okay, Googling didn’t help me. Almost bedtime...
