Earth and space are about to come into contact in a way that's new to human history. To make preparations, authorities in Washington DC are holding a meeting: The Space Weather Enterprise Forum at the National Press Club on June 8th. Many technologies of the 21st century are vulnerable to solar storms.
Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division, explains what it's all about:
"The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity. At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms. The intersection of these two issues is what we're getting together to discuss."

This is the start of what is going to end up as a "natural" EMP event (or several) of catastrophic proportions. Think the power going off, and never coming back on again. The main grid transformers that would blow aren't even made in America any longer, and getting them from China is probably impossible after a planet-wide permanent black-out takes place.

Does this mean that I will have to put my computer into an unplugged microwave to protect it?
Unplugged microwaves make great Faraday cages.

I would think with increased solar activity, the global warming wackos are salivating.

I’ve got my EMP-proof vehicle: an old Ford F-250 4x4 pickup, with a spare ignition module wrapped up in foil. Do you all have one? Wouldn’t hurt to make preparations, and older vehicles are more fun to work on, anyway.

Unplugged microwaves make great Faraday cages. I basically do that. I found a great deal on metal filing cabinets (which when grounded also make excellent Faraday cages) in which I store most of my primary and all of my secondary electronic gear.
Also have a reasonable DC backup power supply available. If nothing else, have an inverter available for your car that will give you at least 500 watts. That way you can at least charge up your communications gear, flashlight batteries, etc.

How come the government and this administration has failed, no, wait, that's self explanatory, has failed to tell the general public about this and made plans for this ?
Where is FEMA on this ?
Where is Obama's administration on this to protect the general public from a Solar EMP event ?

My EMP-proof transportation includes bicycles, horses, and some really good shoes. You're idea is definitely on my list of things to acquire though (along with a small bio-diesel production facility).

Odd you should mention shortwave.
I’ve got a neat rig on order, shortwave, AM/FM, waterproof.
Runs off AC, solar, crank or batteries.
Plus you can charge your cell phone off of it.
Should be fun. Hurricane season, y’know.

Aren’t these the same people that last year predicted sunspots would completely disappear forever by 2015?

We are definitely in the active part of the solar cycle, but during the recent month of April, half the days had 0 sunspots. In the month of May, about 12 days had 0 sunspots. More worried about fallout from Samson or a terrorist EMP at this point in time. At any rate, very little warming from this active sun. Still more cooling. We have had maybe 2 to 3 days of net warming. Just look at the Northern Hemisphere oceans. Lots of colder then normal surface water right now.
