Is Holy Land Archaeology Being Hyped by Politics?

..."exaggeration and speculation the likes of which haven't been seen since pieces of the 'true cross' were found all across Europe in the Middle Ages," said Jim West, adjunct professor of biblical studies at the Quartz Hill School of Theology...

Eilat Mazar of the Hebrew University announced that she had unearthed "the oldest written document ever found in Jerusalem" after sifting debris from a site between the Temple Mount and the City of David, in Jerusalem...

Mazar said the discovery provides "solid evidence of the importance of Jerusalem during the Late Bronze Age" and "lends weight to the importance that accrued to the city in later times, leading up to its conquest by King David in the 10th century B.C.E." ...Wayne Horowitz said ... that the fragment was part of "royal missive." Yuval Goren of Tel Aviv University said... "it was part of a tablet from a royal archive in Jerusalem containing copies of tablets sent by the king of Jerusalem to Pharaoh Akhenaten." ...This is not the first time Mazar has come under fire...

August 2005, she unearthed an impressive building from the 10th century B.C. and tagged it as the palace of King David... she said a large stone wall discovered by her grandfather and Ben-Dov was built by Solomon...

[re: Arabs] Thousands of tons of debris potentially rich in archaeological treasures have been hauled off the Temple Mount without proper supervision during mosque renovations in the past decade. Until recently, an official guide to the mosque for visitors denied that Solomon's Temple had ever stood there. There have been riots over unfounded claims by Hamas and the Islamic Movement in Israel headed by Sheikh Raed Salah that Israeli excavations are undermining the foundations of Al-Aqsa, threatening it with collapse.

First Person: Archaeological Politics -- Why Is Israel Different?
by Hershel Shanks
Biblical Archaeology Review
BAR 36:04, Jul/Aug 2010
Not long ago, a news report landed on my desk describing an Egyptian archaeological project. The Egyptians were going to excavate the 1.7-mile avenue of the sphinxes that, almost 3,500 years ago, linked the grand temples of Luxor and Karnak. More than 1,350 sphinxes lined this glorious, but now buried, path. There was only one problem with the project: 2,000 people now lived on the buried path. They would have to be dispossessed and relocated. The Egyptians allocated half of the project budget of 60 million Egyptian pounds to compensate these families who will be moved. Another Egyptian archaeological project would require the demolition of the entire village of Gurna, located near the Valley of the Kings. The village was sitting over ancient tombs. Nearly 3,200 homes would have to be demolished. The government built new homes for the villagers about 2 miles away...

The City of David is a small hillock of 10 or 12 acres south of the walled Old City of Jerusalem. It was here that the city was confined from the Early Bronze Age (more than 4,000 years ago) until about 700 B.C. Then the city expanded to adjacent areas, but the City of David, as it is known, remained a critical part of the city...

The problem is that there are a few dozen private Arab homes on the site. In any normal country, this would not be a problem. But this is Israel...

The complaint of the small group of vocal protestors is not with the professionalism of the archaeologists, but with the political views of the funders of the archaeology. Even the protestors do not question the professionalism of the archaeologists digging here, but rather the politics of the funders...

nothing is clearer than those of the protestors whose politics, not archaeology, obviously drives them.

It seems people have forgotten about how Obama and his people mockingly desecrated the wall in Jerusalem, but, the God of Israel has not forgotten.

Well, not quite the Koran, and not actually Jerusalem. But the Hadith is pretty clear on the treatment of the Jews.

From the Hadith:

Bukhari (52:177) - Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

Tabari 7:97 The morning after the murder of Ashraf, the Prophet declared, "Kill any Jew who falls under your power."

We used to get “Biblical Archaeology Review.” Herschel Shanks is a Noodle, but always a lot of fun. We especially enjoyed comparing to BAR’s take on discoveries to “Archaeology” magazine’s interpretation.

It’s good for everyone, but especially students, to be reminded that “experts” disagree, sometimes to the point of duelling.

Amazing that they could DENY THAT!

Yes, they do want to ERASE anything related to Israel of the face of the earth.

Islamic Movement in Israel headed by Sheik Raed Salah that Israeli excavations are undermining the foundations of Al-Aqsa, threatening it with collapse.

So this will be the next excuse for Arabs to invade Israel, the damage to Al-Aqsa.

Muslims claim that Jerusalem is the 'far off city' to which Mohammed traveled during his dreams. This is how they claim that they have the rights to Jerusalem.

Specious, at best.

The Waqf called in a Jordanian engineering and construction crew a few years ago to keep an ancient wall from collapsing outward and maybe taking the Dome of the Rock with it — this was necessary due to the undermining done by the Waqf itself.
