Survey shows up Roman remains near Cockermouth and Papcastle

An archaeological survey has revealed new evidence of a Romano-British settlement in Papcastle and Cockermouth.

A six-week survey of land alongside the River Derwent was carried out by Grampus Heritage after the floods revealed bits of Roman pottery. The survey started in June and was funded by Bassenthwaite Reflections.

Project manager Mark Graham said the geophysical survey had revealed that the settlement was much larger than previously thought and had unveiled one on the south side of the river which includes buildings, a road, ditched enclosure and an iron working site.

A large Roman building was also discovered on the north side of the river which is believed to be a bath house.

A community excavation will take place from Monday until Friday, September 3 and local volunteers will be invited along to help investigate some of the features revealed during the survey.

Mr Graham said: "We have many questions to answer and I think that the dig will be really exciting.

"We will be investigating a range of very interesting features during the dig and hope to learn more about the relationship between the settlement and the river.

"The find has really transformed what we thought we knew about Roman Cockermouth and how they lived in that period and that Cockermouth had a flourishing Romano culture.

"People always say that the Romans wouldn't have built by a river but our finds have all been by the river. We will not know whether a prior flood event has sealed in these finds until we start the community excavation."

"People always say that the Romans wouldn't have built by a river but our finds have all been by the river."

Am I missing something? Rome is on the Tiber. London on the Thames. Paris on the Seine. It seems to me that the Romans had no special reluctance to build by rivers.

Undoubtedly many floods and erupting volcanoes which covered many landscapes with lava throughout the many centures have buried treasures in them and as such archaelogical finds in the future may be quite amazing.

It is a shame the Romans are not still around to keep the muslims out of the UK.

The Roman invention of waterproof concrete helped them rule the world. Bridges, aqueducts, sewers, etc were child’s play for them.

Sadly the English threw away 1000 years of their civilization for Islamification helped by Tony Blair, the Labour Party, BBC, and Rupert Murdoch.

Idiots manipulated by TV like the USA.

I have this weird feeling that there are going to be some, shall we say, off-color comments, along with some double entendres.

The Cockermouth and Papcastle pinglist has been around for years.

It’s very small and not often used.

Go to an early map of almost any region. The development and roadways were along waterways. Doesn't take a lot of brain power to know why!!

Someone asked me why my grandfather built his house on the top of the hill. It was like....Duh...why do you think....

Good observation.
I love history, and I find that the majority of Great Major cities, and towns to be built for the most part in defensible position near Oceans, rivers, and gulfs. Commerce, Communication, and the quick movement or supplies, and troops. At least for the true Empire Builders, Rome had it in spades.
