Extraordinary pictures of the 2,000 year old underground labyrinth where Jewish rebels hid...

Cavers crawl along with the complex illuminated by the eerie light from a head torch. The system was once reached through trap doors in Jewish villages, some of which are now archaeological sites, others have been completely destroyed. Today, they may be no more than an indistinct, shoulder-width opening in the ground or hillside.

The intrepid may have to crawl, even slither for a few minutes through a pitch-black burrow too cramped for a fully armed Roman legionary. Turns can be so tight cavers may have to back up to a spot where they can flip from head to feet first in order to continue.

Along the way are niches which once held oil lamps, and carvings in the rock. There are expansive columbariums, with hundreds of holes in the wall once used to raise pigeons and decorated store rooms.

Journey down into the dark: The tunnels were dug by Jewish rebels fighting the Roman empire and were once reached through trap doors in villages scattered around the hills.

Roman historian Josephus described in his writings how King Herod lowered his men in chests from the cliff to the cave openings and, using fire, overtook the rebels.

Flavious Josephus was first a Jewish soldier, but was turned to work for the Romans. He wrote history of both the Jews and Romans during the period.

Underground labyrinth? Dangerous place to hide. You never knew when you might round a turn and find yourself face to face with a minotaur. And if your string broke you’d never find your way out.

Are you from Crete? Or are you the last Minoan?

No, I'm not a Cretan.

Of course you really can't believe that, because Cretans are always liars. (St. Paul says so.)

Just because the Romans — particularly Hadrian, hero of modern San Francisco — didn’t like the practice of circumcision? Or because the Romans leveled Jerusalem and renamed it after Jupiter? And carried out mass executions, uprooted whole villages, and forcibly relocated thousands? Sorehead.

:’)

“The Jewish Wars” are generally referred to as “The Roman Wars” by Jewish historians.

Looks like they mined part of this, not all natural caves.

So, it figures there would be a minotaur.

My pleasure, and thanks for the kind remarks. I fiddled with that miniaturized table of pics for what seemed like a half hour. :’)

Josephus was a controversial figure. While a Jewish soldier he was trapped with companions in a cave after his army lost a siege. His companions wanted to commit suicide rather than surrender. They drew lots as to who would kill whom. Somehow at the end of this process Josephus was still alive and he surrendered.

He ended up under the patronage of the Flavians.

Even though he wrote books, he never satisfactorily explained how these things happened.

It has even been suggested that the cave story was the basis for his supposed fabrication of the Masada suicides. But that turned out to be not a story after all — the ostraca used for the Masada lottery — with the surnames still visible — were excavated there in the second half of the 20th c.

I can understand using that approach in a day when committing suicide generally required a blade. Giving yourself a deadly wound with a blade is a way different proposition than, say, simply pulling a trigger.
