Mystery black sarcophagus opened in Egypt

Two weeks ago, archaeologists in Egypt found a massive black granite sarcophagus in Alexandria, untouched for 2,000 years - and fleet-footed rumour quickly got to work.

Could it contain the remains of ancient Greek leader Alexander the Great, or (less appealingly) a deadly curse?

According to experts who have now unsealed it, it's a no to both.

Instead, it revealed three skeletons and red-brown sewage water, which gave off an unbearable stench.

Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities had appointed a committee of archaeologists to open the relic, which was unearthed at a construction site.

According to Egyptian news outlet El-Watan, they initially lifted the lid of the tomb by just 5cm (2 inches) before the pungent odour forced them from the inspection scene entirely. They later prised it open with help from Egyptian military engineers.

Indeed. This goes counter to jmacusa’s Number 1 Rule about stuff from space. Here it is : NEVER. Repeat, NEVER go poking stuff from outer space with a stick!

you’re welcome!

This find is really fascinating, considering that it was a sealed structure. Looking at the water marks, there seems to be way too much ‘grave juice’ for just three bodies. Was it a septic tank, where three bodies were claudestinely disposed of before sealing? Why use such an (what would have been) expensive container? Are we looking at a 2,000 year old murder mystery? Were they Nubians? Were they Egyptians? I can’t wait for the DNA results. Quite the stinky mystery!

I’m thinking that this could get good. It does not seem to fit the profile of past Egyptian finds that I know of. Maybe the bones are from grave robbers who were caught, ripped off, and disposed of in the sarcophagus. It will be interesting if the bones are not near as old as the sarcophagus itself.

There were also instructions carved in the stone of the tomb on opening Al Capone’s vault.

"Not one Jimmy Hoffa post. I’m getting old."

LOL! So that's what happened to him! And we thought we'd exhausted all of the possibilities in the '70s. ;-)

No. Cthulhu sleeps beneath the sea, dreaming of the death of mankind. Disturb him at your peril.

I don’t know. How much university education does it take to figure out that’s not a stick, but rather, a length of PVC pipe? Green is typically used for sewage. ;-)

Not one Jimmy Hoffa post. I’m getting old.

Maybe if it had been a concrete sarcophagus ...

I like your theory. They don’t look serenely laid out … instead all jumbled up... what would have shook them up in acouple thousand years if they weren’t that way to begin with?

Does make one wonder if they were thieves caught soon after a burial and angry royal relatives decided it would be just if the thieves were interred, perhaps alive and squirming, in the sarcophagus they had robbed.

Fear of thievery was the reason the Egyptians took such pains to bury their royal dead, after all.

Yeah. Well point is what is the idea of poking stuff? “Quick, get the stick1 We must poke it to find out!’’
