Sicily The Wonder of the Mediterranean 1
BBC via YouTube ^ | 2017 | Michael Scott

[snip] I'm in Syracuse on Sicily's east coast, founded by the Greeks 27 centuries ago. In the city's ancient heart is the Duomo, the Cathedral of Syracuse. Today, this is a Christian church, but to walk through its doors is to take a trip back in time to 500 years before Christ was even born. The Duomo began life in 480 BC as the building project of a Greek tyrant, who having beaten the Carthaginians in battle, used the loot to build this. And these are the columns from that temple, soaring up into the sky. It was topped by a statue of Athena with a golden shield that could be seen for miles around. This building was a marvel for the Mediterranean before a single block of the Parthenon had ever been laid. [/snip]

This isn't in Sicily, but it came up in the related vids on the Roku YT app. I've got it running right now. No narration, just a few captions. I miss Italy, and I've never even been there.

It’s a wonderful place to visit - I’ve been to this church. Many of their churches started as pagan temples. You can rent a car and travel the entire island in about a week. People are nice (except the creepy Mafioso that you run into who demand baksheesh) and the food is great.

One of the best friends I ever had was named Syracuse. He looked very Italian. Handsome and a great baseball player.

He had one habit which I hated. When he spoke to you or anyone, he got too close. I always wondered if that was from Sicily or just him.

So, if I go, I'd better stock up on baksheesh. ;^) And just to be on the safe side, I'll take some frontsheesh too.

I’ve been to Catania and Taormina. Beautiful places and I fell in love with Spaghetti Carbonara.

I haven’t had it since. I have never found it in the USA anywhere. I’ve seen it on menus a few times but I could tell by the photos that it wasn’t the real stuff.

It’s probably a matter of where one goes in Italy, as well.

I’d be surprised if an acceptable replacement recipe isn’t online.

:^) Sicilians (I’ve known a couple of US-born people of Sicilian descent) sometimes do stand “too close”.

Most real restaurants don’t have pictures on their menus. Burger King maybe.
