If you go to www.wunderground.com you can find individual weather stations owned by private individuals and companies like you and me. They buy their own instruments and feed it live to the wunderground.com. They provide some ground truth independent of government and MSM.
The last time there was a supposedly major hurricane the ground stations showed much less wind. Sure enough, the damage was way less than the MSM and government had been talking about. Now with Dorian they seem to be doing the same thing.
The data from Weather Underground stations match Windy.com which match Ventusky.com. They all show much much less wind than the alarmist MSM is saying. Ignore the headlines. Look at the data.
The Station at the Zoo at West Palm Beach Florida is here: https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/fl/west-palm-beach/33401.
The PGA Station at West Palm Beach is here: https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/fl/west-palm-beach/33401
Look at their forecasts.
You can select "Change" near the top to pick another local weather station. See for yourself and share.
Ventusky.com, Weather Underground and Windy.com all agree with the same much more modest current readings and forecasts, and do not match the headlines.
I think they are not as old as we are and don’t remember the headlines the Weather Underground made in our memories. It is ancient and forgotten to the youths.
I've used Weather Underground for years, very reliable.
I just plugged West Palm Beach, Florida and the wind is gusting at 18 MPH and they are expecting 1 inch of rain today.
Tomorrow, the forecast is for winds between 30 and 50 mph gusts and 1.5 inches of rain.
I trust Weather Underground more that FOX Hysteria News with leland scumbageater.
From a scientific standpoint, what does less wind mean?
I asked myself the same question. The answer I got was there are a lot of people alive on the planet today who know nothing about anything which took place before they were born.
What about the drop sondes and aircraft reports? Winds are usually lesser at the surface due to friction.
Winds at 10,000 feet elevation do not take off a roof.
For most people the only winds that matter are less than 100 feet elevation.
It all depends were you are in a hurricane, obviously. A few miles can make a tremendous difference. When we were under the forecast landfall bullseye for Matthew weather.com had 115 MPH winds forecast for my ZIP code. We are around 15 miles from the beach. But this cane is forecast to remain way out to sea. If it stays that way impacts will be minimal outside of the beaches, rivers and flood prone areas.
Unfortunate lack of research into related names.
But I do think Ventusky tops out at 90 mph.
The wind is blowing at maybe 20-25 MPH, nothing serious right now but if the storm turns west instead of NW, there will be some dead show offs floating on the Juno Beach.
I'm OK with that, these show off assholes just want their selfies and their pix on TV, it is their choice.
The turtles in my backyard pond are stampeding!

Probably true. This reminds me of a recent survey of college kids or young adults, younger people anyway, and the strong majority said the greatest president ever was Obama. People in that age group only remember Obama and Bush, and perhaps something of Bill Clinton. Since this group of people have no knowledge of their history, they have a tiny group of presidents to choose from , on the question of who was the greatest president.
This is a very sad commentary, in my opinion.
It’s a play on recognizable name, and a good brand that fit well for crowd-sourced weather information that bypassed the official government channels. Weather Underground is part of The Weather Company, which is owned by IBM.
Down, boy. He's not a god.
Palms were completely stripped of their tough, thick leaves (the whole top) and sometimes of their bark on island area that got the eyewall. That is 180 mph+ stuff.
I wonder if their equipment was damaged and reporting bad data.
That is a definite possibility given the insanely high wind speeds being reported.
I am not saying that your an ASS, but dude, YOUR AN ASS.
Moderators, please delete this nonsense post!
Agreed. I find WU is good for short term, but lacks reliability for South Florida summers. Hit and miss with the rain.
That said, an anecdote from this morning.
Publix is a large FL based grocer. I went in this morning, no shutters up on either the grocery store or the adjacent liquor store. A liquor store in a hurricane with no shutters?
My nephew in NE Florida has all the prep done but says it’s like “being stalked by a turtle”. The heavy rain was supposed to be there already, but now it looks more like Wednesday. He grew up down there and has been through countless hurricanes. But I told him we’ll keep on “beseeching” up here till the storm moves on.
Jeff Masters makes Bernie Sanders look like Thomas Jefferson.
I stopped visiting WU about fifteen years ago for that reason.
He’s a horrid radical that will never get my page-views.
