CNN Nick Cordero, a Broadway actor who had admirers across the world rallying for his recovery, has died after a battle with COVID-19 according to his wife, Amanda Kloots.
He was 41.
"God has another angel in heaven now," Kloots posted on her official Instagram account Sunday night. "My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth."
Kloots has been regularly updating her social media accounts with news of her husband's ups and downs as he battled the virus and complications, including an amputated leg and potentially needing a double lung transplant. She said Cordero battled the disease for 95 days.
She shared on social media that Cordero spent some time on a ventilator, suffered multiple COVID-19 complications, including mini-strokes, blood clots, sepsis, and a tracheostomy. In April had to have his leg amputated. He had been on a ventilator and unconscious, and his lungs were so heavily damaged that a double lung transplant was being explored.

I’ve not gone back and reread the original articles about this fellow’s illness, but IIRC (more and more of an IF these days!), Mr. Cordero seemed to be recovering, then got slammed by the complications, which would of course not respond to plasma treatment. By then, the COVID-19 illness itself was no longer the threat.
It would seem that COVID-19 in many fatal / critical cases acts as a trigger, or, 1st domino. For younger persons it is rarer, but COVID-19 can “enable” vulnerabilities / comorbidities that otherwise might go for decades without erupting. Or it can weaken a person to the point that, again, some other problem that normally would not take off, does. Of course, other diseases can do this too (my brother almost died from flu complications), but COVID-19 seems to be quite effective in messing up some people’s immune systems. Possibly this is because it is just “novel” enough to fool some people’s immune systems, and we humans have not much recent genetic past with it, unlike, say, most flu’s. This may also tie into the infectiousness of COVID-19: “Summer” with no precautions usually drastically reduces colds’ cases, and virtually eliminates flu, but COVID-19 infects many people (most not seriously) even in summer and with some mitigation in place. (CA had not “completely” reopened when it was discovered case numbers were cooking right along, correct?)
The infectiousness of COVID-19 is what makes it a problem for people like me and my wife and daughter who act as the go between (isolators?) for my elderly Mom. If 40 people at WalMart or at work (etc.) are breathing out virions, instead of 4, that makes it MUCH higher possibility that I’ll give it to my Mom. (Viral load vs. likelihood of infection is not a linear function.) This is true of flu, too, of course, but MOST people with flu during it’s more limited season are not out and about - they are home in bed.
I get the impression that most bug actors use protection when it comes to sex, although you have the occasional admission because someone famous has a substance abuse problem.
I thought this was Catholic theology.
You have an odd sense of humor.
That is absolutely 100% incorrect. Septic shock is, in fact, an overwhelming response of the body to a pathogen, it is not the infection itself. For reasons unknown, the body initiates an autoimmune response to the pathogen. This is what some call the cytokine storm, although that is not the whole story.
Seriously. I am an intensivist and deal with it every day and also go about my day without a mask. First most people have no idea how to wear a mask properly, second, we are dealing with a disease that is virtually no different than any other LRI that we have face, third, I have a competent immune system.
Get a life.
I am sure that you have properly turned these doctors into their respective state boards of medicine for unnecessary medical procedures. As an intensivist, I know of no critical care doctor who does procedures for “cash”. The real reason tends to be that the family insists on everything DESPITE our encouragement not to proceed. Sorry, I don’t buy your smears on physicians.
Don't count on getting it. The experts can't even agree that masks work, so you'll never fully understand what happened in this case.
95 days with the complications of sepsis and SARS
Broadway dancer? Married with a child. Hmm, just curious if there is more to his bisexuality, er, sexuality.
Early March: HCQ, Zinc supplement and Zpack.
Might have been a happier ending.
Such an intensely angry intensivist are you, Dr. Gas.
That is unknown but apparently he was from Canada originally. :)
Eh. Im 65 and have a history of severe asthma. I got covid. It was miserable, certainly, and I would rather not do that again, but apart from coughing my lungs out for a month and not being able to breathe well, I survived. Didnt go to the hospital at all except to have a chest x-ray. Continued to take care of my little farm by myself. Its not the end of the world in most cases.
That said, Im lucky because my doctor gave me some very helpful drugs. I had a lot of Vitamin D on board because I work outside a lot and take supplements. And I suspect that some people get a far more vicious strain than others.
Yeah, and I have a friend of a friend who’s uncle died from it. People with cancer get it and die and it’s due to Covid19. I recognized this as a LEFT wing hoax about 2 weeks into it. Been playing tennis every day while 90% of the tennis group, over 100 guys stayed home.
We laughed. One of who laughed works at Baylor in Dallas, he’s a medical scientist. He says it’s a hoax too. The people that are dying of it are either over 80 in nursing homes or they are dying with it.
Hoax. Just back from Tennis.
People who are willing to sell their liberties for snake oil tend to make me righteously angry — feel free to sell yours, but kindly do not sell mine.
The truth of the matter is that once in a great while there is a case like this. We are hearing about this literal 1 in 2 million case — Hang around long enough, and you will see stuff you cannot explain. The fallacy would be to make this appear as the NORM (it is not) and craft BAD POLICY around this one in two million story.
It really is! And, I am grateful for their efforts. And, I show it.
Glad you survived the Covid illness.
