In Eastern Europe people collect wild poppies and make tea for people who are sick. In South America you can also buy coca tea legally—it helps you breathe better if you are stuffed up—and they have been using it for thousands of years.

I set the time index to the point where he's searching for the herb.
Michael Wood travels throughout the subcontinent, tracing the richness and diversity of its peoples, cultures and landscapes. Through ancient manuscripts and oral tales Michael charts the first human migrations out of Africa. He travels from the tropical backwaters of South India through lost ancient cities in Pakistan to the vibrant landscapes of the Ganges plain. In Turkmenistan dramatic archaeological discoveries cast new light on India's past.In Turkmenistan, there they find a civilisation named "Zorashtrian", and there they also find horse drawn carts or chariots called Raths which are mentioned in the Rig Veda.

Wood also attempts to re-create soma, an ancient drink recorded in the Rig Veda.

Mu Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor brought me some. It makes your mouth tingly and numb and your breathing really easy. There is not enough cocaine to get addicted to. Doesn’t it take bags and bags full of the leaves to make one gram? It is a lot, isn’t it?

Found this about uses of coca leaves, FYI. Legend is the people became interested in the plant after they saw llamas eating the leaves and getting frisky thereafter.

Hi.

6:53 Problems of evidence

I’m guessing all the evidence was either smoked or ingested, and you can’t drug test a mummy.

“Well, they’ll stone you and say that’s the end-
Then they’ll stone you and they’ll come back again!”

Somewhere inside one of the temples they might find a sign advertising treatment for addiction-discrete, private, etc...

Kidding aside, why are some folks surprised to find that people were making alcoholic beverages and mind-altering substances to use-especially for rituals and at parties/banquets? People haven’t changed all that much in a few 10’s of 1000’s of years, it seems...

Isn’t it true that residues of cocaine have been found in the pharaohs?

Well, there’s this from Herodotus about the Scythians and hemp, besides making cloth from it, there was this odd steam bath:

“75. The Scythians then take the seed of this hemp and creep under the felt coverings, and then they throw the seed upon the stones which have been heated red-hot: and it burns like incense and produces a vapor so think that no vapor-bath in Hellas would surpass it: and the Scythians being delighted with the vapor-bath howl like wolves.”

Hmmmmn...

I have read that. Interesting since it would require long range trade.

Cocaine, tobacco, and the ancient Egyptians also enjoyed the lotus flower, apparently a little too much.
