The Sound of Tinnitus

Posted on 09/29/2022 5:39:22 AM PDT by far sider

Hello tinnitus, my old friend
You've come to sing to me again
I hear the sound of dentists drilling
Of sinks of water over-filling
And the sound is ringing in my brain
It will remain
It is the sound of tinnitus

In restless dreams, I hear the tone
I know I’ll never be alone
You’re always there when I wake up
You say we never will break up
When I lay down my head to sleep at night
After I turn out the light
I miss the sound of silence

They say they’re searching for a cure
Ten thousand doctors, maybe more
After many years of coping
Tell me, should I just stop hoping
That someday they’ll find a way to stop sounds I dread
When I am dead
I’ll hear the sound of silence

Other people do not know
Tinnitus like a cancer grows
I remember when you would annoy me
Now you're trying to destroy me.
Or maybe, you just want to be my friend
Should I pretend
To like the sound of tinnitus

How many times I’ve bowed and prayed
That God would make the noises fade
I must not let self-pity fill me
I know that this disease can’t kill me
It’s the cross I must bear, many others have to bear much worse
It is my curse
To hear the sound of tinnitus

Yes, it doesn’t take much. Been around lots of gunfire, etc. my whole life by had several episodes of heavy gunfire in enclosed spaces in my early 20’s of which my rifle and others near me were fired near my head and my ears have never been the same since. No hearing protection being worn obviously. One of the events caused me nearly lose all hearing in my right ear. I need hearing aids but don’t want them. My wife begs me to get them. I have to watch TV with subtitles. I’m 44. Lol

https://www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/ For those of you who want to hear what some of us go through. Pick a tone and play it at about 7 or 8%. For me mine is in the 2200 to 2300 hz range. I know people hear different things with it but mine is just a steady higher tone.

Hearing aids have reduced the volume of my tinnitus most of the time.

How does that work? Would love to know!

I’ve had it for about 40 years. I figure in the broad range of mental and physical disorders and diseases, tinnitus is pretty minor, and is mostly an annoyance.

I’d like to know, too. My tinnitus developed a couple years ago, decades after my service, but vet friends told me it’s not uncommon. I spent a lot of time around jet engines, and I also spent a lot of time in the turret of a LAV with high frequency turret hydraulic noise, and a big chaingun going off next to my right ear. Docs could measure only a very slight hearing loss though, and nothing could be found on exams. Even got a MRI on my skull, I’m clear. How would hearing aids potentially help?

I have a theory that tinnitus is caused (in some/most cases) by Mercury fillings. I am having mine removed in Nov and will keep you posted

Re: TV subtitles

Not only do subtitles help me understand, I have noticed that most of the time, when I do not clearly hear the words, the subtitle print out stalls or posts gibberish.

That is actually encouraging to me, that the computer cannot understand it any better than I can.

I also keep my TV volume low, lest I disturb my neighbors.

LMAO! The Sound of Silence! Nice job. This tune when performed by the group Disturbed, is a favorite of mine, recently.

I've taken to using bluetooth earphones so I can actually hear my TV clearly. The sound coming across the room is vastly different than getting put right into your ear.

I don't watch much TV, just like to hear it when I do. (Typically things like Mark Levin, Greg Kelly for example.)

When I first developed tinnitus, I thought it would drive me crazy.

But, after several years of listening to a constant high-pitched squeal, I am fine.
