A-Bomb Victims Stage Rally in Hiroshima Against U.S. Nuclear Warship

TOKYO (AP) - Victims of the U.S. atomic bombings of Japan joined a sit-in rally in Hiroshima on Saturday to protest plans to base a nuclear-powered American warship in the country, an activist said.

The protest came as talks got underway between top Japanese and American security officials on how to realign the U.S. military presence in Japan.

About 80 people - many of them victims of the 1945 U.S. atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki - rallied against plans announced Friday by the U.S. Navy to deploy a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in Japan, said Kazutoshi Kajikawa, who heads the Hiroshima Peace Movement Center.

"It makes me angry that America can even consider basing a nuclear carrier in Japan, the only country in the world to have suffered a nuclear attack," Kajikawa said.

Basing the ship in Japan will also put the Japanese public at risk of being exposed to a radiation leak, he said.

The U.S. has said the carrier can be operated safely in Japanese waters. American Ambassador to Japan Thomas Schieffer told reporters Friday that nuclear ships had made 1,200 visits to Japan in the past 40 years without harming the environment.

The U.S. Navy said it decided to replace the conventional aircraft carrier now based in Yokosuka, just outside Tokyo, with the nuclear-powered ship because it has greater capabilities.

Did you read the lead article? Do you know what the thread is about? Are you conscious of events beyond your ken?

Be a good idea to read the article. Then, get back to me and let me know how you really feel about folks who got nuked.

You again are equating the use of the atomic bomb with Hiroshima and Nagasaki with the 9/11 attacks. That's insane, and in any event, is NOT a conservative idea.

It's a shameful idea, NOT a conservative one.

When the war in Iraq broke out, he said he wished he were young enough to go over there and fight for his country again. He was in the Korean War. BTW, ken is not how you spell that word. He said he did what he had to do at that time and was very proud to have served his country. In case you are interested, this man is my much older brother. I am extremely proud of him and his desire to fight for his beloved country.

Enola Gay was the most advanced bomber of its time, and of the Silverplate Bombers of the 509th, it was considered to be the best of the 15 Silverplate Models

You forgot to tell everyone why Enola Gay was the "best" of the Silverplate Superfortresses ...

Tibbits got to pick out the plane, personally, at the factory. He goes up to the Martin plant and starts looking over B-29s. He finds one he likes, and the shift supervisor tells him that the aircraft was largely assembled by guys working the first shift back after a holiday weekend and were probably all hung over. The shift supervisor then suggests Tibbits pick the third or fourth Superfort down the line, since it was assembled by a mid-week crew that was on top of their game. That B-29 became Enola Gay.

I forgot to say that if their leaders had not "fired the first shot", then there might not have been a bombing. It shortened the war and saved countless American lives. I am glad they did to save our relatives and other citizens who were in the service to serve their country. I am not blaming the people who were kids as you say I am.

Demonizing the opposition will never win an argument on FR, no matter how often it is tried.

I suggest you re-read that post. At the moment you are at the level of "Don't say nuthin' 'bout the brother".

I've definitely used some trigger words, but Freepers are supposed to be able to read English and figure out what's being argued.

Prior to that, Freepers are supposed to be able to write in English exactly what they mean.

It is obvious to everyone but yourself that you are exhibiting paranoid behavior...how you could possibly read my posts and call me an islamofascist as a result of what was written in them is a sad statement about how you think logically and the emotions driving that thinking.

Then again, hopefully this whole thread of yours is a puton resulting from boredom....if not, then...

Of course you're going to make some odd and sad defensive reply to this post (an islamofascist post if there ever was one)...

Please get help...you're not making a lot of sense....and lowering the level of discussion on FR.

????????????????

The Japanese Imperial Army made no distinction between children and adults in nanking - nor do the Islamofascist terrorists in the Middle East.

Tit for tat.

About 80 people...

Considering the city of San Francisco (population roughly 750,000) recently rejected siting the Iowa (which coincidentally was Admiral Halsey's flagship at the surrender ceremony), finding "about 80" protestors in a country of 125 million isn't exactly an overwhelming response. (Assuming the A.P.'s usual accuracy, "about 80 people" probably means substantially less than 80. ;-)

Apparently, even Jesse Jackson can find more protestors than that to protest people opposing the formation of a graduate student union at Yale.

Still should be no excuse for YOU to make no distinction between children and adults.

The death of those children in Japan were the result of very poor citizenship decisions by the adults. As posted before, they allowed their government to behave in an unacceptable manner and that behavior has consequences.

I am still waiting for your reply to my post #151, where I provided my credentials, as they relate to my understanding the impact of using nukes, and my NAME.

Now a few more questions for you: How can a little Irishman such as myself, be a Gumbah? Why have you gone on an insult offensive instead of answering my simple challenge to provide your name and credentials. Has your service in the USPS altered your ability to read a question and answer it without spitting venom in the eyes of the person presenting the interrogative?

I know the surrender was signed aboard the Missouri, not the Iowa - or did we have two wagons in Tokyo bay at the time?

Having spent a lot of time in Japan I must differ with your assessment of their culture. They, like us, do have two distinct cultures: The Ballsy Class and the Castratti. The Ballsy Class builds and breaks things, and the Castratti bitch about the Ballsy Class. You will find military men, construction workers, entreprenuers, and CEO's in the Ballsy Class. In the Castratti class resides the politicians, most government functionaries, leftists, manfeminists, and 99.9% of college professors. You will find this social structure in all but the most primitive societies, where they are all in the Ballsy Class out of necessity, which indicates that the Castratti are made possible by the hard work and bravery of the Ballsy Class.

Well.

I guess I have to spell this out for you, since you're obvioulsy having a difficult time understanding.

When you, like drop a nuclear bomb on a city, it doesn't distinguish between women, children and military forces and supplies. Unfortunate fact of physics. Maybe someday somebody - probably in this Country because we care - will have worked this problemn out.

Which leads to the next issue - was it necessary to employ such a horrific weapon in the first place. Given the alternatives, both the American forces and the majority of Japanese civilians in the entire Coountry benefitted by the use of the bomb as it forstalled the need for an invasion of the Japanese home islands and kind of suicidal village by village, town by town and city by city killing that would have entailed. The latter would have generated far more civlian casualities than occurred at Hieroshima and Nagasaki combined.

Besides, the people who were so ready to emply bayonets, rifles and worse on women and children in face to face confrontations really don't have much to whine about do they??

Given the alternative between killing some of their civlians and having them come over here and kill all of ours - or as many as they could get their homicidial lunatic hands on, I would opt for the former.

Capisce? Comprehende? Verstehen??

What I was implying was ships carrying "special weapons", had nothing to do with propulsion.
