Houston Officials Shunned US Army Corps Warnings Days Before Harvey; Alerted 100K+ Homes (tr)

The mayor of Houston and Harris County officials were advised two days before Hurricane Harvey made landfall that the storm was brewing into a likely “catastrophic” 5-day weather event that would flood at least 100,000 homes and paralyze Houston.

Yet city and county officials refused to call for a mandatory or even voluntary evacuation of Houston.

The result: Houston and parts of Harris county look like flooded battlefields, with residents clinging to rooftops of their homes while rescue workers — both professional and volunteer — risk their lives to save untold thousands in distress.

Houston and Harris county’s four commissioners were briefed on Thursday morning, August 24 after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers warned officials that Hurricane Harvey, which at that point had not made landfall, was shaping up to impact the region even worse than Hurricane Allison in 2001. That storm killed 22 in Houston, left 30,000 residents stranded, and damaged over $5 billion of property.

The officials were given ample time to evacuate the city, federal officials and correspondences examined by True Pundit confirmed.

I am sure much more on this will come out in due time.

Instead of attacking the messenger last Friday..some of you might have wanted to consider that a law firm who refuses to say something was fabricated might be indicating there was truth in the info that came from their address.

And that a Dem Mayor might lie

If I hear one more talking head say this was unimaginable, that you can't plan for this....I am going to....Aaaargh. Of course you can plan. If you gave the brains and imagination to plan for everthing from nothing at all to absolute Armageddon.

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.

Rumsfeld's quote ought be hanging on every emergency manager's office wall. Plan accordingly.

Somewhere in the back of all this evac-talk....one has to wonder where they would have housed two or three million people, and how this would have worked. The obvious route would have been I-45 or I-69 (all north). Even if the state and federal folks had the US military lined up....it’s hard to imagine twenty camps set up 200 miles north of the city and able to handle 50,000 people each.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think anyone has ever done a FEMA-like exercise to handle one-million residents on some evacuation order.

When someone tried to warn her friends about what the Army Corps of Engineers said and it went viral...this was the response from the Mayor

It seemed a strong likelihood last week that the high pressure system to the west and north of Houston would do just as the weather people were saying, ie, block the westward and nortward progress of a low pressure system. That’s basic meterology.

That’s what happened. That’s why Harvey stalled over the houston area, that’s why an entire hurricane’s woth of rain fell in one location, and that’s why the mayor of houston made a dumb, one-sided statement rather than giving both sides of the equation.

A replay of Katrina when the National Weather Service. Over 7 days before Katrina hit N.O. the NWS said there was 100% certainty that Katrina would flood N.O.

The difference this time is that for Katrina Bush covered for the Democrat Mayor and Governor by saying “Nobody knew” which was in direct contradiction of the NWS.

This time, Trump is not saying “Nobody knew”.
* * * * *
What were they thinking? This is the question we ask of the Huston and Harris officials. Are they so deep in the culture of victimization that they want themselves and their citizens to be victims? Do they think there is more handouts if they are victims? Do they think that being victims will give them the ability to blame someone else for their victimhood?

Seriously, what goes through the minds of both the N.O. and now the Houston/Harris officials?

Do you personally believe that the Dem Mayor and the Republican Judge should have pretended like the info that came from the Army Corps of Engineers shouldnt be trusted because it didn’t come from MSNBC..meanwhile knowing the info was true?

Assuming this is how all of this plays out..we will find out in due time.

I won’t print what I’m thinking in response to that...

BTW, the more I think about it, the more I wonder how much of this pi$$ poor planning is due to the attitude demonstrated by the singularly inappropriately named Harris Flood Control District. Flood Control. WTH were they smoking....

I think the reality here....is the same reality from New Orleans. Once you give a evac-order....there should be a realistic plan in place. I don’t think of any these major cities have ever written a plan big enough or bold enough to handle two or three million people.

In my military days...we had a evac plan and could be in the trucks in a couple of hours, with all the food and support equipment to survive on our own for at least two weeks. We practiced this and knew precisely what we could do.

Look around....has any of these massive urban cities ever drawn up such a plan or attempted to make it work?

Another interesting twist is whether the Judge and the Dem Mayor will get sued by the person who posted the info given what happened to her.

A law firm is involved. Seems like they will look to build a case.

Don’t know if there is one.

1. A lot of Houston is flooded, but a lot is also still fine.
2. A massive evacuation is also dangerous, even a well planned one.
3. Their credibility is still hurting from the last time they suggested people evacuated and nothing happened.

Being democrats they are willing to sacrifice as many lives as possible in order to fabricate talking points against republican presidents.

I really cant speak to the folly or wisdom of ordering an evacuation given the circumstances.

What I can speak to is that if I was in Houston and I relied on a Mayor saying stay put when he knew this info..and actively excoriated someone who posted about the Army Corps of Engineers report pretending it was unfounded....I WOULD BE LIVID

Judge Emmett is a Republican..and white.

I don’t know the mechanics of his authority in this situation but he was out denouncing the warning that had the same details as that army corps of engineers report

ASSUMING this story from truepundit is true.

I would have totally ignored this stooge and had myself far north of the coast long before it got wet. Listen to democrats at your own peril. They are wrong on everything.

WOW! What is it with Democrats? The mayor should have passed that info on. Done a voluntary evacuation and moved out children & the elderly.

I talked about it on Thursday with the rest of my team located in Houston. NWS and TWC were both stating early Thursday that this was going to be bad and flood beyond anything Houston had seen. Most people just didn’t want to believe it.

After Rita, people in Houston were afraid to try and evacuate again. I had coworkers stuck on the highway for 16 hours with the families. Once again, politics will be responsible for lots of suffering and death.

Where the mayor screwed up was not doing a limited evacuation of the areas that flood even with a couple inches of rain. Plus being an arrogant liberal about it.
