But Friday's shooting at Santa Fe High School, which left 10 dead, was carried out with a pistol and a shotgun - firearms that even gun-control advocates generally regard as utilitarian.
The reality that weapons not included in proposed assault-rifle bans can still exact a double-digit death toll further complicates a wrenching national debate about how to prevent future tragedies.
"That's true" that weapons other than assault rifles can kill many people at once, conceded Avery W. Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which favors a federal ban on assault rifles but not on shotguns or pistols....

You know the American left’s hang up with “assault rifles” is very bizarre. In Britain, they banned handguns but AR-15s are still legal (though hard to get), because they view handguns as being the most dangerous.
Or a high-powered air gun.
By “complicates” they mean “off the narrative”. They’d have preferred the murderer use a weapon of their choice and killed more people. Let that one sink in.

They won’t settle for anything less than complete disarmament of the law-abiding.

1966, Charles Whitman went to the observation deck atop the Main Building tower at the University of Texas at Austin, where he proceeded to kill 16 people with a Remington 700 6-mm bolt-action hunting rifle.
Student brought out their own hunting rifles and kept him pinned down until a police and an armed civilian could sneak up behind him and shoot him dead.
