On September 5 gun control activist David Hogg suggested AR-15s cannot be used for self-defense because they shoot further than handguns.
He made this suggestion via a tweet which he sent in response Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaughs testimony that AR-15s and other semiautomatic rifles are used for self-defense.
Kavanaughs full statement was that handguns and semi-automatic rifles are weapons used for hunting and for self-defense.
But Hogg isolated the words self-defense and tried to make a point:

The effective range of an AR-15 is 1600 feet for comparison your typical handgun is 75 feet if youre shooting somebody from 1600 feet away youre not defending yourself...
...youre hunting.

Thank you.
And it's a skill that should be developed by ALL Americans, civilian and military alike.
not the brightest of bulbs...
OMG. Arent this a**holes 15 minutes up yet?
This thread is making me long for those days at Camp Pendleton, watching the sun come up over the rifle range and listening to squads of Marines running up and down the fire breaks.
Nothing like early morning rifle shooting. I preferred it to the pistol range.
Its a good thing this little snowflake doesnt live where I live. Its dove season, so we are waking up to the sound of gunfire in the open space next to our housing development.
Hogg would have a nervous breakdown if he woke up to that every day for two weeks.
That’s not real difficult to do, but there’s far better calibers for that job.
A hand gun is for fighting to your long gun.
500 yards is “doable” with an M-16 or AR-15. The drop for a standard NATO 5.56 is around 50” to 65” at that range and the energy is down to about 200. Not really a take down option, more of an injury type shot.
Like you said ... doable but why?
I prefer to live as a pacifist, but Hogg is trying to disarm all decent people. That makes him an active enemy of our country.
I’d take him up on his challenge. I’d happily meet him at Gettysburg to test his claims. We’d stand in that open field, in plain sight of each other at a distance of his choice between 75 feet and 1600 feet. He gets an AR-15 with iron sights. I get my grandfather’s old S&W .357 revolver with an 8 3/4 inch barrel and iron sights. He knows he’s safely outside my range and I’m inside his range. We’d see if I can “defend” myself when he’s at “hunting” range.
I successfully sighted in my AR-15 at 600 yards about two weeks ago. Well, more correctly, I hit the steel target at that distance, my farthest. 400 yards was much easier. Using 62 grain, 5.56mm ammo. Satisfying.
Hey Sandy, I see you got your name change but retained your sign-up date, nice!
Yep, I didnt want people trying to zot me thinking I was a rookie.
Not following the logic. Does this mean I can’t use a $20 bill to buy a $3 item because the 20 is just too big and I could buy lots more stuff with the change?
The question is why does this evil fool receive so much media time. Answer ie a group of so called adult fools is supporting a childish fool.
The killer at this child’s school shot people at close range. The camera hog is out of his league.
And if I understand correctly it’s 500 yards without a scope, iron sights only.
I have an AR-15 and a 100-yard privare range. I use a non magnified Red Dot sight. And I’m happy if I can keep all my shot in the 8 inch target (not shooting from a bench) . I would like to try longer distances but I don’t have any access to ranges like that.
Yes, iron sights.
I have the same problem with ranges around here. Longest public range is 100 yards (good for sighting in the slug gun for deer season).
There is a private range nearby that has much longer ranges but the dues are kind of high.
That POS knows not nor cares for history.
Hey Dave, my 30-30 contender is accurate far beyond 75 feet. So is my Smith and Wesson revolver.
Disagree! Although 1951 is on the far edges of my memory, at P.I. we qualified with the world's "greatest battle weapon" at 600-yards from the prone position...
The M-1 only needed to hit the target on any part of the body to take the chicom off his feet...
