Kuwaiti preacher calls for destruction of 'pagan' pyramids and Sphinx

An Islamist preacher from Kuwait called for the demolition of the Giza pyramids and Sphinx "to put an end to idolatry and the worship of such pagan constructions."

"The fact that early Muslims did not destroy the pharaohs' legacy upon the Arab conquest of Egypt does not mean that we shouldn't do it now," preacher Ibrahim al-Kandari was quoted by the Kuwaiti Al-Watan daily newspaper Tuesday.

The call echoes that of leader of Islamic State (IS) group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who described the destruction of the historic monuments and archaeological sites as a "religious duty," Al-Ahram reported.

The alleged call comes a few weeks after IS group militants were seen in a video destroying Assyrian artifacts of in the Mosul museum in Iraq using sledgehammers. The destruction was described by UNESCO as a "crime against humanity."

During the reign of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, another radical Salafist preacher issued a fatwa calling to destroy the Sphinx, or at least cover it in wax, claiming that the monument was worshipped by peasants as a god in the 14th Century, Youm7 reported. He also called for the destruction of Egypt's monuments citing Prophet Mohamed's destruction to the idols in Mecca in early Islam.

According to Youm7, the preacher went further and called for closing the Tourism Ministry building over "promoting prostitution and debauchery."

How is it that when the Muslims burst out Arabian peninsula led by people closely associated with Mohammad they left all the historic sites alone. The Arabs conquered Egypt in 642 AD only 10 years after the death of Mohammad and they left the pyramids and like alone. The Salafists claim they are following the pure Islam from the time of Mohammad so why do they not follow that example. The Caliph during this time was a companion of Mohammad.

I guess I'd better make vacation plans to see them while they're still standing.

The world is made a better place for certain things having existed.

Islam is not one of those things.

I thought it was them that tunneled into the great pyramid as well as strip it of its cover stones.

What’s up with the “scare quotes” in the headline around “pagan?”

The ancient Egyptians weren’t pagans?

Many of the casing stones fell off due to a great quake in 1303. The ruling sultan of the time hauled the stones off to rebuilt parts of Cairo.

A lot more were removed by Muhammad Ali Pasha during the early 19th century to build a mosque in Cairo.

He, BTW, was a secularizer, by the standards of his time and place, not an Islamist fanatic.

It’s to avoid putting any kind of official imprimatur on the idea.

Because Saddam in control of Kuwait was a threat to us. This is just some third-rate fake holy man calling for the destruction of the pyramids, something that has been done before.

One of the caliphs did try to demolish the Giza pyramids. He had his demo crews start with Menkaure, which is the smallest of the three big ones. After six months, they made a small dent (visible today), but the calculations showed that it would take a really, really long time to tear all three down, and cost a fortune. The hope that the conquest of Egypt would result in a monumental payday hadn’t panned out, and they had other stuff to do, so the effort was abandoned.

In Arabia, the pre-muzzie sites were deliberately depopulated and remain that way for the most part. To keep everyone in the dark about what had happened before, the Big Old Mo had a new writing system invented, and the pre-muzzie stuff became unreadable in a few generations.

I think they will eventually destroy these sites. All non Israeli sites in the ME are probably in danger. Artifacts and art from these places don’t belong in their home contries just by virtue of origin.
