I homeschooled my kids and I can say that reading and phonics was a lot easier to teach than I realized.
And I might add, my kids were anxious to learn before their 5th birthdays. It is amazing how much kids can absorb and learn.
I don’t have a problem with sight words, and I don’t see an advantage with phonics.
What worked for us was simply diligence, insistence, and patience = necessary parental work.
My first-born could read by kindergarten, thanks to my Mom. One time at a summer camp/daycare, they marched the kids around the outside for exercise. A staff member pointed to a sign on the sidewalk and said “That sign says no talking”. My kid said “No, it says “No Parking”. That was before he was 5 and told me I was “brain dead”.
I had to stop cussing in the car in NJ traffic. Someone cut me off and the little tyke gave the one finger salute with a few choice words.
Kids should know how to read even before entering school.
Ditto. We HS’d and used phonetics. The kid was reading and correctly pronouncing words that were beyond what she knew.
IOW, she was frequently coming up and reading a word to me with “what does that mean, daddy?”. Most of the time she pronounced it correctly.
We had to watch her because we discovered she was capable of reading stuff that was a little too, uh, mature, for a kid her age. It was a challenge. /grin
I was taught to read by phonics in the second grade back in 1961 in a Catholic school. The book that we used, “Breaking the Sound Barrier”, was written by one of the nuns. I don’t think she made one dime from the book.

I learned to read shortly after entering the first grade. I then took my older sister’s book and read it in its entirety that afternoon. I have no experience with phonics. We attended a Catholic school.
I can't believe that you've actually said this.
And how to you come to that conclusion that public school kids are inferior to private school kids? All 3 of my children went to public elementary, middle and high schools. I might add that all 3 went to a public university, graduated with Bachelor’s degrees, and all 3 are gainfully employed. Lest you make some comment about how things are different now than in the past (even though HS was only 6 years ago for my youngest), I am a Scoutmaster in a Boy Scout Troop, sop I have access to Middle and High Schooler age children. I would say that roughly 2/3 of our Troop are in public school (others are in Charter Schools, or home-schooled). I don’t see a large difference in education between them.
There are good and bad public schools, just are there are good and bad private schools. Don’t make blanket judgements based on just one kid (your niece).
I never used the word inferior. I still think private school kids do better than those in public schools. If your kids are able to excel in public schools that’s good.
Why? Hooked on phonics always impressed me as a scam. What worked for me and the kids was regular parent reading to kids time mixed with answering "what's that word" with "sound it out" for the longer words and straight recognition for common short words like the, and, run, etc.
The HUGE advantage with phonics is it teaches you rules to use to deal with new words. The sight see method doesn’t
I taught my kids to do the same, with magnificent results in a bettered life for them.
