An international team of researchers said Sunday they will soon begin analyzing cosmic particles collected inside Egypt's Bent Pyramid to search for clues as to how it was built and learn more about the 4,600-year-old structure.
Mehdi Tayoubi, president of the Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute, said that plates planted inside the pyramid last month have collected data on radiographic particles known as muons that rain down from the earth's atmosphere.
The particles pass through empty spaces but can be absorbed or deflected by harder surfaces. By studying particle accumulations, scientists may learn more about the construction of the pyramid, built by the Pharaoh Snefru.
"For the construction of the pyramids, there is no single theory that is 100 percent proven or checked; They are all theories and hypotheses," said Hany Helal, the institute's vice president.
"What we are trying to do with the new technology, we would like to either confirm or change or upgrade or modify the hypotheses that we have on how the pyramids were constructed," he said.
The Bent Pyramid in Dahshur, just outside Cairo, is distinguished by the bent slope of its sides. It is believed to have been ancient Egypt's first attempt to build a smooth-sided pyramid.
The Scan Pyramids project, which announced in November thermal anomalies in the 4,500 year-old Khufu Pyramid in Giza, is coupling thermal technology with muons analysis to try to unlock secrets to the construction of several ancient Egyptian pyramids.
Tayoubi said the group plans to start preparations for muons testing in a month in Khufu, the largest of the three Giza pyramids, which is known internationally as Cheops.
"Even if we find one square meter void somewhere, it will bring new questions and hypotheses and maybe it will help solve the definitive questions," said Tayoubi.

From the bottom up. ?
If memory serves, the late Luis Alvarez used cosmic ray detection to check for unknown chambers in the Khafre pyramid at Giza. He found none. Given its size and its geographic and chronological proximity to Khufu, if Khufu has an internal spiral ramp, Khafre probably does also.
What will they do with all the grain they find?
No, from the inside out. :o)
My husband and I went there TWICE. Amazing.
What was more amazing was that Americans were welcome there. They liked us. Also they SEEMED to a happy group of people...so different from the dour Saudis.
It was microwaved by the muons. It’s popcorn now.
It was a Wick’s Law government job, they wouldn’t be finished yet....
Why feed the hungry of the world of course, can you imagine how much pyramid power that grain has absorbed over the centuries?
The answer is so very simple. 4600 years ago the earth was much smaller thus the gravity was much less than it is now. Over the last 4600 years the earth has sucked up particles from space creating the mass that we currently have. With the lower gravity that they had 4600 years ago, the workers didn’t have any problem hoisting the blocks into place. That’s my theory and I’ll change it when ever I want.
If I understand it correctly, I believe Joseph built the pyramids. He built them to be grocery stores or something.
“built by the Pharaoh Snefru.”
Um, I think he must have had a little help.
I subscribe to the view of Davidovits (another French researcher) that the inner blocks were not quarried, but poured concrete (not the kind we make today). His view is IMHO a necessity; it is also compatible with internal ramps, and all other hypotheses (other than the “Giza Power Plant” nonsense) and models of the construction — but the reverse is not true, the other hypotheses can’t work without Davidovits and his geopolymerization.
I was just thinking it could just be sand and the slopes of the sides are related to the angle of repose.
When they scrape what’s left of Gospodin Putin off of anything, he will have been replaced by someone as bad or worse, as usual in Russian politics. But the Russians don’t look at it as we do - they want a strong leader who will defend the motherland at all costs.
I thought that the ‘poured in place’ theory had pretty much been debunked as the internal structure of a poured stone is much different that a naturally occuring stone; and no one has found an actual ‘poured’ stone.
Poured stones may exist, but no one has found one that can be proved to have been poured.
Putin’s the worse there is, unless he’s replaced by a mullah of course. What Russians want is irrelevant. They are too used to the yoke to recognize the value of liberty, or, they emigrate. The only middle ground is among those who want to run the criminal syndicate that is euphemistically called the Russian gov’t, or those who want to replace it with a different label but the same basic functioning.
The poured stone theory has never been debunked at all. The stones are difficult to study, of course, because Egypt’s antiquities are under regime control, but the only real studies have shown results consistent with a poured origin. Period.
A recent show on the History channel had a guy who is an engineer that was called in to help fix detioriration of one of the pyramids (step?)
His theory was that the quarrying of the stone near the pyramids would have left huge amounts of rubble—and where did it go? His idea is that the pyramids were faced on the outside and the interior filled with sand and rubble from the nearby quarrys. It makes sense from an engineering POV compared to hauling in millions of stones weighing over a ton and placing them at the rate of one every 20 seconds to get the job done in the time alloted. He says the Egyptians were very smart and this is the way they would have done it.
Not saying that’s the way it was done, but it is an intriguing theory. I know some tunnels have been dug into pyramids and found rock, but how far, how deep? Enough to make this theory a “no-go” from the git-go?
I’ve seen something like that around here somewhere... and it might be stiff enough to not sag that much, assuming there were some experience with the technique, and they knew enough to round the mound such that the settling from its own weight would bring the shape into some precision as a pyramid. A look at this very pyramid, the “bent” pyramid (so named because Sneferu’s architect was once told to “get bent”, I dunno, maybe there’s a class in joke writing somewhere) could suggest that approach was actually tried. The problem is, this one merely had its angle changed because of the catastrophic collapse of Sneferu’s first attempt. The third one, the Red Pyramid, is in very good shape today.
A problem of course is, the “Robbers’ Hole”, a shaft that was chewed up through the Khufu pyramid during antiquity, makes a nice angled cross-section through the structure and, you guessed it, no rubble.
