In what has been described as a breakthrough, Vietnamese and Russian archaeologists have found valuable artifacts in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai that they say belonged to ancient humans around 800,000 years ago.
The traces of homo erectus or "upright man," including fossils and more than 200 stone tools, were discovered at 12 locations around An Khe Town, according to the findings announced by the scientists on Friday.
It was "the biggest and most important" archeological discovery not only for Vietnam but Asia, Dr. Nguyen Giang Hai, chief of Vietnam's Institute of Archeology, told Tuoi Tre newspaper.
The Russian team worked with the Vietnamese institute on the two-year excavation. The archaeologists are expected to organize an international conference to publish the findings to the world.
Huynh Nu Thu Ha, vice chairwoman of the People's Committee of Gia Lai, said the province will launch a project to preserve the relic sites.

If id didn’t have traces of humans it wouldn’t be much of an archaeological discovery now, would it?
How many were leading transgender lives? None you say. So, we consider them the neanderthals.
80,000 or 800,000 years ago?
any transgenders :)
From what I can see in that photo, they look exactly like -- rocks...
That's what I was thinking.
800K
Yeah, they definitely are rocks. :’)
Impact by a hard hammer depends on 60-degree shockwave propagation to detach flakes. (Like a BB hitting glass...)
The remaining "scar" is a distinctive, "shell-shaped" ("conchoidal") depression radiating from the point of impact -- that looks very much like a clam shell.
And, the detached flake has matching, distinctive "bump" on it (called the "bulb of percussion". And, you can often see/feel shockwave "ripples" on the surfaces:
They are easy to see -- and even easier to feel with the fingers...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And, only a fast-moving hard object (hard-hammer blow) produces a conchoidal scar. No natural process has been shown to produce them.
A couple of minutes "hands-on" with those specimens would suffice to determine if they are "just rocks" or not.
FOOLS! THEY’RE RELICS! [/s]
Yeah, they look like big rocks to me too. I’d have to see something else there to be impressed.
Are those big boulders the surrounding material for the fossil remains? A tooth, a bit of jawbone, a fragment of a skull or of an ulna? Leave it in the rock, exposed and they can’t call it fake.
They’re too darned big to have been used as tools, except as an anvil to beat up other stuff on. Or maybe tools were flaked off of them.
Interesting, in any case.
And they’re pretty. :’)
No, as I interpret the photo, the big rocks may be displayed as “cores” from which flakes — to be used as tools — were detached, using hard-hammer percussion.
Archeological thanks.
Uh-oh. Are those elongated alien heads I see?
Better call Giorgio Tsoukalos for a reading.
I was thinking Moslem Anthopithcanies gone mad with Jihad.
Why would anyone, in their right mind, such as they may have had in that day and age, leave readily available Wildebeest and other readily available warm furry dinners to battle malaria in the highland of VN.
To my mind, such as I have left, am thinking that there is some serious problems with the Idea of human of human migrations. (Thanks Blam and others.)
I am beginning to to think that we haven't a censored clue about human origins or migrations.
80,000 years ago -> 800,000 years ago?
